I'm using Fedora 10 on my HP Pavillion Dv6 series laptop. VGA is nVidia. I checked the nVidia and they have a driver for Fedora Linux. But when I tried to install this driver it says my driver is not compatible with my kernel version. But I had the latest kernel. and further can't I upgrade my kernel after installing this driver if it works?
I am using Kubuntu 10.10, and I have an Nvidia GT 320M with driver version 260.19.12 (updated from 260.19.09 i think) on my laptop. Suddenly, my desktop effects stopped working, and the window borders and window manipulation buttons are getting mixed up with everything else when i mouseover them or click on them (I guess some desktop effect I had is malfunctioning or not functioning at all?). Under System Settings -> Desktop Effects, I can only see grey'd out options, which won't let me enable desktop effects.
Has anyone in here had the luck to enable desktop effects with GeForce 7300 sametime installing the proper geforce 7300 drivers on a twinheaded monitors? Twinheaded meaning im on a dual head monitors. Can't seem to have desktop effects working. I was able to install the nvidia drivers vi installing the rpmfusion repo's and installing kmod-nvidia-PAE.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686. Rebooted and it worked, Now when i try System>Prefs>Desktop Effects i get "Accelerated 3D graphics is not available. Desktop effects require hardware 3D support".
I just switched back to the open source radeon driver, since the kernel update may have messed with fglrx for the proprietary driver. if i boot into nomodeset then i have desktop effects, however when i boot regularly, the desktop effects are off and do not work.ATI radeon mobile graphics HD4200; opensuse 11.3
I hope this is the correct section. I have recently updated to 10.04 and now Compiz/desktop effects wont work. When I try to turn visual effects on I get a message saying they could not be enabled. I'm a bit new to all this so not sure if I'm doing something wrong.I've looked at many threads regarding this problem and nothing they say has worked. iv tried using Hardware Drivers (in systems administration) but this says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system".
Also I don't know whether this effects anything but when I open NVIDIA X Server Settings (in systems administration) i get a message saying "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."Does anyone know how I can get Compiz/desktop effects working?.
The desktop effects on my system stopped working. They were working fine up to a couple of days ago. Now it says I need to check my configuration for xorg. How do you do that?
Also this appears to have started after another user was using my system and crashed it. They said that it just shut-off with no explanation as to what happened.
lspci -v shows this

How do I get back to the systems default drivers?
I do NOT wish to have to reinstall F14 yet again because the system has been very stable since the last install.
I'm not able to get the Desktop Effects/3D graphics to work on a Gateway laptop. I suspect that I'm not using the correct nvidia drivers but I don't know what drivers I need for my system.I followed the instructions from this link with no luck.
Some system info: # uname -rs Linux 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64
I have a notebook with an Nvidia Quadro NVS 130M. Desktop effects were working on OpenSUSE 11.2. Last week I upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.3, and now desktop effects do not work. When I try to enable them, a box pops up that says something like "desktop effects are not supported on your hardware / configuration. Do you want to try anyway?". If I "try anyway", it does NOT work - I get a jumbled screen that is mostly black, but sometimes objects appear when I mouse over them.
I have the proprietary nvidia drivers (version 256.53) loaded and working (nvidia kernel module loaded, Nvidia splash screen on X server startup, correct lines found in Xorg.0.log).
The Composite option is enabled:
Never-the-less, I still cannot enable the desktop effects.
Im a new member here.So please don't get mad at me.If i posted on a wrong section(Am I in the right section?) By the way,Here is my problem. My graphic card is Intel 82852/82855.And it passes the Ubuntu Desktop Effects requirement. I am aware of enabling the graphic card in Ubuntu 10.10, Since enabling the drivers was successful. I enabled the desktop effects. After i switched to Normal(Graphic Mode)the screen went blank. Then after i clicked ALT+TAB. there is an option to keep this option or not.I clicked Keep this settings. Then i proceeded in Web browsing(because i'm a web addict). Then i click CTRL+ALT+LEFT/RIGHT For the workspaces to switch. Then i found this 4 square transparent with black margin boxes.Which has a weird distorting effect. That effect is going crazy. Then i rebooted(Hoping to fix the problem). Then it is still there.
OpenSuSE 11.1 updated on Saturday to all of the latest patches and stuff. I was a bit behind, so quite a few things got updated. Most of them probably don't matter for this problem.
Prior to Saturday, desktop effects were working fine. After, they don't. Gnome still works ok, but attempting to go in to the "Desktop Effects" configuration just hangs for a minute (spinning "wheel" cursor) then nothing happens ("arrow" cursor returns).
Looking at things via "ps ax" I can see that clicking on "Desktop Effects" starts process(/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/simple-ccsm).
Running this from a CLI produces:
After which nothing happens and I have to hunt down the PID and kill it.
Searching for this "tuple index out of range" error, I found a couple of 2008 references, but those are for much older version so I'm thinking that they're probably not relevant. Nothing else seems to apply.
am using a desktop computer which is having 1 gb ram,ge-force 2 but when I goto set the desktop effect to a 3d level the computer gets hanged/stops responding,is there any way to fic this problem and ya i am using fedora 12. VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 03).
I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.10 on VMware. My computeas a NVidia 8800GT graphics card.I'm trying to activate the Desktop Effects but keep getting the following error message: "Desktop Effects could not be enabled"I'm very new to Linux so I'm still in the extreme learning phase. My goal is to get Compiz to work. I was able to download/install it but I don't think it's working because of the Desktop Effects issue I have
I installed mint 10 gnome when am trying to enable the desktop effects it says "desktop effect cannot be enabled and something like cant find window manager".
am running Linux mint ver. 10 I can't enable desktop effects, where can i see which display driver i use ?Inside Additional driver all i see is VM VirtualBox Guest additional for linux module
I recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my Inspiron 1520 laptop. Everything works fine except when I try to enable desktop effects. When I click on it a progress bar comes up saying (searching for drivers) then the screen flickers and finally a message comes up saying DESKTOP EFFECTS COULD NOT BE LOADED.
im using the ubuntu distro and when i goto the visual effects tab and click on normal or extra, it says "desktop effects could not be enabled" also, i have Two hdd's, a 100GB that has windows 7 and ubuntu. and a 250GB that has Windows XP. GRUB didnt notice windows xp though, so its not a boot option.
I am using HP G62 Notebook running i3 with intel(R) HD graphics card. I have installed fedora 13 and the display is not so good as it used to be when i used my old laptop and desktop effects require me to have 3D acceleration.
I have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off.
A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB).
In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.
For some reason my desktop icons have decided to be very small and can't be changed (systemsettings/appearances/icons/advanced) It happened after I enabled and downloaded the files need for compiz. I have disabled compiz and now have no 3D desktop effects, but still cannot alter the desktop icon size. What have I done?
I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my aspire 3000 and everything seemed to work just fine... until I tried to activate desktop effects. tu put it simple, it just don't work. I checked and doubled-checked the lsmod | head to make sure that my drivers (sisfb / sis_drv.so) were installed and loaded. they were. I then made sure that my pc was opengl-supporting (Glxinfo | grep "direct rendering". The answer was positive. With that in mind, I tried many different ways to run compiz(compiz --replace, appearance-desktop effect, run app-compiz) but neither if these gave any results.
I installed Gnome desktop environment recently then ;I' ve lost KDE desktop effects settings. I just can see Compiz Configirator. I cant configure effects independently. There is same settings in gnome and kde. And also I cant change windows appearence.
I can't enable visual effects. I've been scouring Google for things to try for way too long at this point. I think I've tried it all. I'm using ubuntu 9.10. I've got an nvidia card. Interestingly, I've had the visual effects working on this computer on two different occasions. Once a couple years ago, then I reformatted and had them working again. Then when I shut my computer off a few months ago, all of my X settings got erased, and from that point on, I was never able to get visual effects enabled again.
When I try to enable visual effects I get the error: "Desktop effects could not be enabled" I'm running the nvidia 185 driver, although I've tried the 173 driver with the same results. If I try doing compiz from the command line, I get this:
[Code]...
BTW, the message that says you can't post links in your messages until you have 15 posts is extremely misleading (and made me very frustrated). I had a few (at) symbols in my post and didn't realize that was the problem, because I was looking for some kind of URL, since that's what the error message said was the problem. I was about to give up hope on even posting this message! Oh well, I figured it out.
I've been using Fedora for quite awhile now, and thought I should move onto a different Distro. I'm used to the command "yum", and so this is all new. My hardware in my computer isn't that bad, but my graphics card is pretty old. I'm using the "radeon" driver because my card is an ATIx700 Pro. The proprietary driver won't work. The question I have is: Where are the Desktop Effects?Even with my "radeon" driver, It is able to run. I've had it on Suse and Fedora.
fter I enable the desktop effects on KDE, everytime that I login in to a session,KDE crash.... Im just gettin a black screen. My question is. Can I turn off the desktop effects by editing a file? if so, which file do I need to edit.... and where is the extensive directory tree i can find a the file that holds information about kde crashing "error file or log file" were I can get more info in what is happening with KDE and find out why is crashing.
Desktop Effects could not be enabled. Also, I'm not having any luck installing Catalyst drivers. After installing Catalyst driver for the right kernel version, Xorg goes corrupt when starting up.Kernel: 2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i686.PAEVideo card: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3450$ glxinfo | grep renderdirect rendering: YesOpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
