am using a desktop computer which is having 1 gb ram,ge-force 2 but when I goto set the desktop effect to a 3d level the computer gets hanged/stops responding,is there any way to fic this problem and ya i am using fedora 12.

I'm using Fedora 10 on my HP Pavillion Dv6 series laptop. VGA is nVidia. I checked the nVidia and they have a driver for Fedora Linux. But when I tried to install this driver it says my driver is not compatible with my kernel version. But I had the latest kernel. and further can't I upgrade my kernel after installing this driver if it works?

I am using HP G62 Notebook running i3 with intel(R) HD graphics card. I have installed fedora 13 and the display is not so good as it used to be when i used my old laptop and desktop effects require me to have 3D acceleration.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off.
A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB).
In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.
For some reason my desktop icons have decided to be very small and can't be changed (systemsettings/appearances/icons/advanced) It happened after I enabled and downloaded the files need for compiz. I have disabled compiz and now have no 3D desktop effects, but still cannot alter the desktop icon size. What have I done?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my aspire 3000 and everything seemed to work just fine... until I tried to activate desktop effects. tu put it simple, it just don't work. I checked and doubled-checked the lsmod | head to make sure that my drivers (sisfb / sis_drv.so) were installed and loaded. they were. I then made sure that my pc was opengl-supporting (Glxinfo | grep "direct rendering". The answer was positive. With that in mind, I tried many different ways to run compiz(compiz --replace, appearance-desktop effect, run app-compiz) but neither if these gave any results.

The strange thing is that it not seems that is a X window problem, it looks like more like a configuration problem in some part of the kde script to initialize the log in, because if i manually start the X service it works fine, i dont know what is the source. View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't enable visual effects. I've been scouring Google for things to try for way too long at this point. I think I've tried it all. I'm using ubuntu 9.10. I've got an nvidia card. Interestingly, I've had the visual effects working on this computer on two different occasions. Once a couple years ago, then I reformatted and had them working again. Then when I shut my computer off a few months ago, all of my X settings got erased, and from that point on, I was never able to get visual effects enabled again.
When I try to enable visual effects I get the error: "Desktop effects could not be enabled" I'm running the nvidia 185 driver, although I've tried the 173 driver with the same results. If I try doing compiz from the command line, I get this:

BTW, the message that says you can't post links in your messages until you have 15 posts is extremely misleading (and made me very frustrated). I've been using Fedora for quite awhile now, and thought I should move onto a different Distro. I'm used to the command "yum", and so this is all new. My hardware in my computer isn't that bad, but my graphics card is pretty old. I'm using the "radeon" driver because my card is an ATIx700 Pro. The proprietary driver won't work. The question I have is: Where are the Desktop Effects?Even with my "radeon" driver, It is able to run. I've had it on Suse and Fedora.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just recently come back to Fedora from OpenSuSE, where all of my compositing worked beautifully before my hard disk took a big dump. Now that I have Fedora 13 installed, I've gone through the ridiculous hassle of eliminating nouveau so that my NVIDIA drivers can do all the work. Everything seems fine except that some of the animations of desktop effects are very slow and choppy. For example, the minimize window animation looks great, but upon un-minimizing, the animation gets choppy and slow. Same with the slide animation for the dialogue windows. Transitions of the desktop cube work just fine. Show windows animation works good on zoom out, but zooming back in is slow and choppy.
I'm quite puzzled here. Originally I used the NVIDIA driver from rpmfusion. I've had troubles before (with OpenSuSE) with the version in the repos, so I tried installing the latest version from the NVIDIA website. No changes though.

After I updated to KDE 4.5.3 in Fedora 13 I've had 2 things stop starting up when I boot up. They were working fine before the KDE update.
The first is desktop effects. I turn it on, but once I reboot then desktop effects are disabled again. When I turn them on I get a KWin message that it has been turned off by another application. How can I find out which application that is and why?
The second is Yakuake, which I want to start automatically when I boot up. I don't see where I can set it up to start automatically (and I don't remember how I did it before, or if it was automatic when I installed it).
UPDATE: I just found the autostart configuration and added Yakuake. It worked, now it runs whenever I start.
