Debian Configuration :: Safely Removing Mounted USB Device

Jan 7, 2011

I'm not sure if this is a bug in Squeeze beta 2 or if it's something I've overlooked. I have a Maxtor 250 GB external USB drive that I use for backups. It gets auto-mounted fine, always in the same place, and from my normal user account I can write to it, even delete directories on it if I want to. But when, from Gnome, I select the "Safely remove" option, I get an error to the effect that it can't stop the device. The weird thing is that the thing actually *is* unmounted. I've checked the mount point and it's no longer there.Is there some package I maybe should've installed but haven't? I'm not really worried about data loss, since I'm sure the drive wouldn't unmount unless it was properly synched; it's just the error message that bugs me.

Ubuntu :: External Hard Drives Won't Be Automatically Mounted After Upgrading Some Packages

Sep 8, 2010

1) Environment:
Ubuntu 10.04

2) Phenomenon:
External hard drives won't be automatically mounted after upgrading some packages...

I have a "not good" habit: I'd love to upgrade whatever suggested by Ubuntu upgrading center every morning.
However, after upgrading some packages for today, my computer won't be able to automatically mount external harddrives, including file systems ext4 and ntfs.

My question is:
1) How can I check what packages have been upgraded just within today?
2) How to make my Ubuntu be able to automatically mount external hard drives whenever I plug in a harddrive as before?

Software :: Removing Mounted Drive Folder Safely

Dec 3, 2009

I have a nightly scheduled script which creates a $vhostname directory under /mnt, mounts a windows box pointing to /mnt/$vhostname then rsyncs (pulls) some files/folders from the mount point. After this, I want to unmount the drive and remove the /mnt/$vhostname directory. Problem is that removing the /mnt/$vhostname directory sometimes ends up deleting all the files on the source! Example of script (stripped out lots of superfluous stuff):

Code:
vHOSTNAME='testhost'
vRSYNCFLAGS='-ahvz --inplace'
/bin/mkdir -p /mnt/${vHOSTNAME}
/usr/bin/rsync ${vRSYNCFLAGS} /mnt/${vHOSTNAME}/KAVSHARE /backups3/${vHOSTNAME}/
/bin/umount -l /mnt/${vHOSTNAME}
/bin/rm -Rf /mnt/${vHOSTNAME}

It seems that my umount line isn't disconnecting the mount, leaving the following line to literally delete all directories, recursively. Is there a way of safely just deleting the directory (ie: mount link) without linux accidentally trashing the whole source?

Debian Configuration :: External NTFS Drive Not Mounted Writable By Default?

Feb 20, 2010

When I plug in my external USB Hard drive which is formatted as a single NTFS partition, it is recognized and mounted automatically, a nautilus window pops open. Unfortunately it is not writable. The reason is: the partition is mounted "ntfs" (which lacks write support) instead of "ntfs-3g". This is the output of mount after plugging in the drive:

$ mount | grep sdc1
/dev/sdc1 on /media/4EBC5FB82435B0EE type ntfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077)

I want this partition to be writable by just plugging it in.

The partition should not have any errors because a) I fsck'ed it windows and b) mounting it manually works:

$ sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 /media/disk_/
$ mount | grep sdc1
/dev/sdc1 on /media/disk_ type fuseblk (rw,allow_other,blksize=4096)
$ devkit-disks --mount-fstype ntfs-3g --mount /dev/sdc1
Mounted /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Disks/devices/sdc1 at /media/4EBC5FB82435B0EE
$ mount | grep sdc1
/dev/sdc1 on /media/4EBC5FB82435B0EE type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096)
$ gnome-mount -nbtd /dev/sdc1
$ mount | grep sdc1
/dev/sdc1 on /media/disk type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096)

How can I get ntfs drives to be mounted as writable by default, preferrably without having to modify fstab?

Ubuntu :: External HD - Still Flashing After Safely Removed?

Jul 5, 2010

I've used both 9.10 and 10.04, but I noticed, when I in 9.10 mounted my external HD and then safely removed it (without removing the USB-cable) it used to flash for 3-4 seconds (indicator-light) and then go out.

Now, in 10.04, it just keeps flashing (indicator-light), even though I have removed it safely (not unplugged it though). Why would it do this? The indicator-light should only flash if there is activity going on on the HD?

I've heard that it was factory formatted with something called Linux ext3. Does this make sense? Has anyone had any experience with reformatting external harddisks being used as a NAS (home use).

Fedora Hardware :: Crashes On "Safely Remove" Of External HDD?

Jun 14, 2011

I'm running Fedora 15 GNOME3 on a Compaq Presario C700 laptop.

I have an external Transcend HDD. I have three partitions on it.

When I insert it, it's automatically detected and the partitions mounted and works perfectly well but when I "Safely Remove" the disk, Fedora freezes and hangs. The mouse is immobilized and none of the keyboard actions work. I can't even enter the Virtual Terminal. The music playing in the background loops a short 1 second buffer or so.

However, if I eject all the partitions by clicking on the eject button in Nautilus and then "Safely Remove Drive", it does not crash.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: IPod Automatically Mounted But Can Only Write As Root?

Jan 30, 2010

I don't know why but every time I plug my iPod it gets mounted automatically as root and therefore I can't write anything in it. I mentioned this issue on the #suse irc channel posting mount output:

eugenio@openSUSE:~> mount
/dev/sda7 on / type ext4 (rw,acl,user_xattr)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
debugfs on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw)

[Code]....

I read some posts about editing the fstab file but I'm not really sure how to do this (if this is the solution) and I believe this could have worked on earlier versions (where HAL was used) Is there anything I can do to make opensuse mount my ipod automatically with full access to normal users?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Prevent That Particular NTFS Partition From Automatically Being Mounted

Aug 21, 2010

I have an NTFS partition problem which prevents me from installing openSUSE on my desktop computer. It's not a trouble with installation, it's a security issue relating to NTFS.I have a desktop running XP exclusive, but wish to also go dual boot but can not because I have created a NTFS partitoin on my HD wich I don't wish others to know about.After booting window$, I am able to successfully unmount the partition using Diskpart, which is a command line program within that OS. Once unmounted, it is effectively hidden from those who might be snooping until I manually remount it. Essentially I remove the drive letter which makes it inaccessible to Windows.

(Yes I know a person with proper skills can easily find it, but that's not applicable in my case for those who would look)If I install openSUSE which I desperately desire, it will automatically locate and mount the NTFS partition I wish to hide, making it easily accessible to anyone booted up in SUSE.Changing the attributes to the associated files to "hidden" is not an option. I need that secret partion to remain unknown.How can I hide, deny access to, or prevent that particular NTFS partition from automatically being mounted in Suse? Once that security issue is resolved I look forward to using Suse again, like the other people do in our home.

Ubuntu Servers :: Second Hard Drive (sdb1) Is Not Automatically Mounted?

Mar 4, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit.

For some reason, the second hard drive (sdb1) is not automatically mounted:

rick@rab-1:/mnt$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 500.0 GB, 499989348352 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60786 cylinders

Before I installed Ubuntu, I installed the RAID software to handle 4 500 GB hard drives - so there are supposed to be two mirrored drives. I'm not an expert in using RAID. I'm assuming it is correctly configured. I only "see" two drives. sda has Ubuntu etc. How can I get sdb1 mounted? I've tried using the palimpsest program but I'm afraid I screw it up. Do I need to re-format sdb1?

Hardware :: External HDD Changes Locations In /dev While Mounted?

Feb 23, 2010

I've got an external HDD from Iomega that I've been using for over a year and lately it's been doing this thing where it suddenly changes from /dev/sdg to /dev/sdh while the partition on it is still mounted, seemingly at random. I'm often (not always) able to look at the contents of the partition, but it gives me I/O errors followed by a list of files and directories.

I am using slackware64 13.0 running kernel 2.6.29.6. Below I've provided the relevant lines from dmesg (edited out irrelevant lines to keep post under max character limit.) I'm beginning to suspect NFS has something to do with this, but I can't even begin to imagine how.

When this happens I'm able to umount -l the partition and remount it using the new /dev/sdh1 but eventually the same thing just happens and the whole drive switches back to /dev/sdg. This problem persists between reboots. It's also happened with an ext3 filesystem, in fact I switched to ext2 because it kept telling me "Aborting journal" and I was afraid I would get a corrupted journal and perhaps a destroyed file system.

About 8 months ago I was doing some work at my brother's place and while down on the floor fiddling with cables I yanked this whole drive off the desk and it smashed into the floor (while spinning probably, I'm pretty sure this model is disk based.) I've been expecting to see some strange behavior since that happened, but it took a while and I can be certain this is related to that incident, although I'm rather convinced it is.

Code:
sd 5:0:0:0: [sdg] 976773168 512-byte hardware sectors: (500 GB/465 GiB)
sd 5:0:0:0: [sdg] Write Protect is off
sd 5:0:0:0: [sdg] Mode Sense: 34 00 00 00
sd 5:0:0:0: [sdg] Assuming drive cache: write through

Hardware :: External HDD Won't Stay Mounted ?

May 14, 2011

My external hard drive randomly unmounts in the middle of file transfers.

The system is Debian Wheezy with sda as single-partition ext4. I have an INEO I-NA212-J USB 2.0 enclosure with 2xHDD single-partition ext2 which are recognized as sdb & sdc.

When files are transferred from the external to sda, the system will unmount the external drive at random times. When that happens, "fdisk -l" no longer reports sdb & sdc, but does show the drives as sdd & sde and they can be mounted. I have to reboot the machine to have it see the drives as sdb & sdc again.

When transferring from sda to the external, the unmounting is less frequent but I get file corruption. For example, a large directory seemed to transfer successfully, but the result showed as a single executable file and the displayed file properties were just long strings of numbers. Deleting the file did not reclaim the space.

There seems to be no pattern to the failure. I have checked for file size, number of files, system uptime, transfer time, etc. I have so far not seen it happen while there is no activity. The problem is the same whether there are 1 or 2 drives in the enclosure. However, I have used USB thumb drives and microdrives (both vfat) without problems.

For mounting, I have tried both "mount" and "pmount", and for file management both Xfe and Midnight Commander.
