While installing OpenSUse i created a seperate drive for my personal files. Instead of mounting it to /home i mounted it to /usr/.....please tell me how to mount it back to /home user so that it has my files only

Now I want to backup some documents in ubuntu, but the harddisk is not visible, I can't see it, ok I think the term in Linux is that it is not mounted. Is there something else one should do ?

Debian if I suspend the PC, will the external mounted harddisk safely umount automatically? I want to make sure that the integrity of my external HDD is not compromised while the PC goes in the suspend mode.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm facing some issues with mounting the cd and usb stick in Gnome: once the hotplug device is discovered Gnome displays multiple lot (5+) notification windows (i.e asking about the opening application) and also causing Dbus errors like: "DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending".
Ubuntu just mounts once, no issues like mentioned above. This is standard 11.3 installation, where should I look for the cause?
I have problems with my acer aspire M1201. I have added a 2GB RAM beside the 1GB stock RAM. Currently I have reformatted my stock Hitachi HDD 160GB and I have added another HDD in which it is a Samsung 500GB HDD SATA drive. I have successfully installed GNU/Linux Opensuse 11.2 OS in the new harddrive (Samsung). Besides all that, the other specifications are all stock. After 2 days of successful runs in the new OS and no problems at all, the OS hangs and fails to boot and displays this, Error 18 : Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS. I should mention also that while setting screensaver, when I chose OpenGL, the OS hangs and i have to hard-reset my pc. I suspect that the current BIOS version which is R03-B1 and product name ACRA8000-S03-990610-R03-B1 needed update due to new hardware. But currently there is no new downloads in Acer's website regarding my BIOS version. What should I do to run my Linux successfully? I should also mention that I haven't logged to the internet due to unsuccessful dialer which i have consulted my internet service provider and yet to rectify.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an external USB had drive. It is a Buffalo drive. When it is mounted it appears in /Media/Buffalo. The problem is, every time I reboot my system it is mounted to a different location.
e.g. /Media/Buffalo_1
reboot again and it is mounted to /Media/Buffalo_2
The two previous mount points always remain present as empty directories. This is creating problems I need to do away with. I need to work out how to get this to mount to the same directory every time. In opensuse 11.2 with the automount option installed I did not have this problem. It has only appeared since the install of 11.3.
[openSUSE 11.1, kernel 2.6.27.45-0.1-Default, Gnome 2.26.3] I have a problem where I have an external USB drive which mounts at boot, with /home aboard it along with several data-only partitions, and if I try to add another USB drive *after* boot, the system changes the device IDs previously given to the original drive. The already running sdb now becomes sdc. If a user or processes are attached to /home when this occurs they are left in the twilight zone and stuff starts crashing. An added weirdness is the newly added drive isn't stealing the sdb ID, the added drive becomes sdd instead, and nothing at all is left at the sdb ID.
Note:
- System boots from sda, a non-USB drive with the system as well as /swap onboard, that should be uninvolved with the problem.
- Among the 4 partitions of the boot-mounted USB drive there are 2 lux-encrypted partitions (ext3). One is /home (originally encrypted under 10.3 and added back after machine upgraded to 11.1) and another being a data directory (later encrypted under 11.1).
- The problem _may_ occur only when the additional added drive is also lux-encrypted, but this may or may not be always true as I have limited other USB stuff to test with, most of it is also lux-encrypted.
My old server machine running Ubuntu 6 experienced hardware failure, so I built a new machine with spare parts and decided to install 10.10. I used the 2 HDDs from the old machine and decided to use existing partitions for the 10.10 installation. I specified the existing partitions on a 250 GB PATA drive for root, /boot, /home, and swap. For some reason when I booted up 10.10 for the first time, the other HDD (750 GB SATA) was mounted as /boot. I never specified the second drive to be used for anything during the installation, so I have no idea why this happened.and how can I change the mount point for /boot? I would like the highlighted partition in the attached screenshot to be /boot. I really hope nothing on the 750 GB drive was overwritten in this whole process, because it contains all of my photo and video backup.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have stumbled upon a rather peculiar problem whilst trying to rescue a CentOS system. For this effort I have to connect a USB stick and boot from that stick. That does not pose a problem. The system contains 3 disks (scsi) which are, not surprisingly, found as sda, sdb and sdc. The problem is that the USB stick is also assigned as 'sdc'. And so the process comes to a grinding halt, because there is no image found on sdc.
I have to find means to make usb-storage (or whichever module decides on using sdc for the USB stick) choose sdd as devicename. But how?
I did a pretty extensive search through the forums, but to no effect. Probably because I did not really know how to construct the finding key for this specific problem.
Bonus points for one that incorporates the fact that this system is at a remote site on which I login via a network connected KVM...
So i've been battling this for a while now, trying all sorts of different options and searching the boards before I finally decided to post this.I can't make CDs or DVDs, so my only option is to mount the downloaded ISO file on my laptop with CloneCD, then set up PXE DHCP,TFTP server. This method works on other distros but this one in particular is causing me problems in the installer.
So here's the process:I copy the files vmlinuz and initrd from the ooti386loader directory to my tftp root directory.on the system I am installing, i run gPXE, at the prompt type vmlinuz initrd=initrd.I have tried a large combination of different options {install=nfs after I have been having trouble which I will get to later.
the kernel loads, the installer starts. prompts for "Please make sure CD #1 is inserted" naturally, i hit back and select NFS as the install source. It then prompts me for DHCP configuration and the NFS server IP and directory.I'm running an NFS v3 server (haneWIN NFS to be specific) and exported the mounted ISO (this case F) as /suse.
I have 3 disks in my PC which are partitioned equally as I use them for Raid 1.The first partition on every disk is a simple ext2 partition for booting. No Raid there. So I mount them as /boot and /boot2 and /boot3. So I can backup my /boot to the other boot directories. That worked for some month and this morning I just want to look if all directories have enough free space left. So I did a df -h and got this:

I installed OpenSUSE 11.1 on a friends computer after having a lot of trouble from ubuntu, and because I use it. It was working great when she got it home, but it locked up randomly and wouldn't unfreeze so she turned it off and when she rebooted She got an error about there not being a file system present and that she needed to run a mount command, which didn't work. After that, now it just says that there is no files system present and you ge tthe basic prompt. I had her run a live cd and run Gpartd and check and repair the partitions, but it did nothing.

I have just installed Xubuntu and suprisingly it did not ask me to create a partition within its installer like Ubuntu does. So now, I am left with 150mb of free space. I want to expand that amount. The problem is, I do not know where it has been installed on. I have a C and an E drive. Currently, the C drive is mounted and the E drive will not mount even if i press the mount button. Does anyone have a solution?

Cannot even move files from the USB drive via the servers USB as it is virtual one on a ESXi host.
the school starts on monday (8 hours) and there is about 10GB files that need to put in place before that.
PS. OpenSuse 11.3 all patched with minimum XFCE desktop on the server. easy-ltsp install via 1-click install on the opensuse/kiwi-ltsp page. Server + 20 clients Everything else functions properly but no CD or USB on clients
I upgrade from 11.2 to 11.4 and now, my samba share does not mount at boot time. I see nothing in the log. What is changed in 11.4 ?

how can I clone my installed ubuntu to a new harddisk? with 32bit ubuntu I have used:tar cvpzf -> create a tar file on my external nas system. after that I have done a restore tar xvpfz - worked with 32 bit.
Alternative I have mounted both disks and via another linux partition I have used:
cp -rvbdR /source/* /target
both methodes worked with ubuntu 32 bit. With 64 bit ubuntu I can NOT get it to work. error message after booting the clone: /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthoriy ..
I can see that /source/var/lib/gdm has different rights as /target - will be part of the problem.
This did not happen with the 32 bit ubuntu - but why ?
i have an external harddrive which i encrypted scince opensuse 10.2 with luks. Now i installed opensuse 11.2 its impossible to me to mount this drive correctly.
the harddrive was recocnized in my former opensuse 11.0 correctly as luks encrypted and during installation yast installed the kernel module and encrypted the harddrive so that i regulay could mount it on boot by giving the password for that harddrive. Scince opensuse 11.2 however yast thinks this is an dmcrypted partitoon and tries to unlock the harddrive using dmcrypt which of course fails.
does somebody know how i can encrypt and mount the externeal drive automaticly?

I have fake(bios) raid0 with Windows XP and third non-raid hd which I wanted use to install linux to (as I read about problems with installing grub into raid0). During installation Yast had correctly detected raids and all windows partitions (basically its divided into two raids with 2 partitions of 1st and 3 on 2nd) and even proposed mounting them at /windows/c, /windows/d and so on. Now I have OpenSuse 11.4 installed, grub at /boot on sdc but to log to system I need to use installation disc (otherwise Windows starts up). What I wanted to do is follow this tutorial to add grub to Windows bootloader: Boot Multiboot openSUSE Windows (2000, XP, Vista - any mix) with Windows bootloader. Problem is after reboot partitions are not mounted (dirs exists but nothing there) so I cannot copy boot code to windows. I read that fake raid may need special drivers but when i start Yast->system->partitions it again shows everything correctly!

One of my 2 harddisks, a Hitachi HDS72101, is very slow, the driver is ahci.
Output of "hdparm -t /dev/sda":

No problem with the other one, a Hitachi HDS72161, the driver is pata_ali.

I'm currently using Lucid, but this happened on Karmic as well. The way I see it, the result I would like would be either:
1. The "safely remove drive" command just unmounts the drive (I can't imagine what else it does anyways, besides give me this stupid error)
2. There is no "safely remove drive" option.
