CentOS 5 :: Accessing Windows Desktop And Drives From Centos And Vice Versa?

Oct 3, 2009

i find this is an issue which might be tiresome for everyone except for those experts. Esp. for the computers which are dual booting(both windows xp and centos installed in the same computer), that when we are in CentOS we need to switch onto windows immediately. and vice versa. i see this is possible only by shutting down the centos/windows and then restarting onto the other OS.

Can anyone tell me the the solution to work simultaneously both xp and centos without the need of shutting down and restarting There maybe or may not be the solution...but i find the pleasure to know if there is for example, remote desktop connection in windows xp, is there any solution, we can work on windows via centos or vice versa ( in the same machine),

Ubuntu Networking :: Accessing Windows Machine And Vice Versa?

Oct 11, 2010

I had a look through a tutorial video showing how to set up Samba, and the end result was the only shared file/folder showed up on Windows. I want a direct access to all the files and folders like you can do from Windows to Windows, by signing in the user account from another system. And likewise I want access to all Ubuntu files and folders of a user account through Windows.

how if it's possible with or without Samba.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Access Windows 7 Shares On 10.10, But Can Do Vice Versa?

Dec 7, 2010

Ok this is a really weird issue because of the way it played it out. I have been researching it off and on for weeks now trying to figure it out and have come up with nothing. Basically when I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) I was able to access the shared files on my Windows 7 (64 bit) computer perfectly once I changed the domain name in Samba. However I wasn't able to access my Ubuntu shares from Windows 7. After researching for a while to figure that out, I found this:[URL]... Boom! Instantly I could access my Ubuntu shares without a problem from Windows 7.

However after I did this something happened where I could no longer access Windows 7 files from Ubuntu. Unfortunately I am not sure if the change happened immediately or some time later. When I go Places > Network I see the name of my Ubuntu computer (Living-Room) and my Windows computer (Nick-PC) as well as a folder called "Windows Network." When I open Nick-PC it brings up a dialog box saying a password is required. There are three text entry fields and a couple option:

Username: Nick
Domain: NRAU
Password: [not filled in]
_ Forget password immediately
_ Remember password until you logout
_ Remember password forever

The password field has to be filled in and I have tried every option. Each time it thinks for a second and then just pops the same dialog box again.

General :: Get Windows To See Host Names And Vice Versa?

Sep 17, 2011

I have Windows and Linux machines on the same subnet. My router configuration correctly tells me both their machine names, and their IP addresses. However, when I try and ping a Linux machine from a Windows machine, or ping a Windows machine from a Linux machine, I need to use IP addresses rather than names. If I'm pinging a Windows machine from a Windows machine, or a Linux machine from a Linux machine, the machine name correctly resolves without any hosts file entries. Why is this?

I would have thought my router (D-Link DIR-655) would act as a DNS server itself. I see it has an option called "Enable DNS Relay", but from what I've read this won't help me. If it's relevant, the DIR-655 is used for internal traffic, with my ISP's Netgear DGN1000 used as a gateway to the Internet. It's on a different subnet though, and all my machines connect to my DIR-655, not the DGN1000. What do I need to do to have host names automatically resolved within my subnet regardless of the operating system that they're running?

Ubuntu Servers :: Auto Copy Folders To Windows And Vice Versa?

Apr 6, 2010

1. I need a script(like a scheduled cron job) which should perform Automatic copy (backup) of a directory from ubuntu server to windows and vice versa....

i tried every thing like samba mounting,ftp,etc..with samba its possible to map the network drive of an ubuntu directory in windows..but if the ubuntu server is not available then i cant access the network share..

Exactly this situation is happening for me while backing up tmp directory of ubuntu server ...

so in this case i need a permanent backup of tmp directory of ubuntu server in windows rather than a network share.

2. Also any ideas or scripts regarding automatic ftp (while doing a backup) from ubuntu server to windows... which can easily solve the above issue...

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba And Windows Networking - Read / Write Access To All Folders Contents From Both Machines

Mar 9, 2011

Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Mount Drives After Windows Reinstall

Feb 27, 2010

I have a windows XP Pro machine and also a Server running ubuntu, the server was built for me and the builder is no longer available for consultation. The server drives which were on my desktop beside my C drive were working flawlessly allowing me access until windows started running quite badly which meant I had to reinstall it. After the reinstall I could not see the drives displayed and I am unable to access them from windows. And also not able to mount them. The server has not been switched off at any time and does not even have a monitor or keyboard or mouse. I have not done anything to change any settings to it. I have zero knowledge of the system. My windows administrator password is exactly the same I have looked on the server and my files are intact I just cant access them from windows which I need to do.

I got the following details off the server:
KERNAL LINUX 2.6.27.5 - 117. fc10.i686
GNOME 2.24.1
MEMORY 881.4 MiB
Processor AMD LE 1620
Samba Server Version 3.2.4-0 fc10

I was told the drives should appear on their own but that's not happening I am not able to sight them at all file sharing and printer sharing is enabled.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Write To Shared Folder From XP To Vice Versa?

Aug 13, 2011

The title says it all: I have two folders which I share in Ubuntu (10.10), one of them is "public", so I set it to allow guests to create/move/delete files in the folder. Then there is my mother's PC running Windows XP Professional (also one shared folder with write access). When I was using Windows 7, I could create/delete/edit files on my mother's shared folder but now, using Ubuntu, I can only read from it. Same with the shared folder in Ubuntu, I can only read it from XP but not write to it.

Networking :: Route All Traffic Received By An Interface To Another And Vice Versa?

Mar 2, 2011

The task I am trying to complete is the virtualization of an IPv6 router created using two fedora machines. Here is the physical setup I have now...

PC1:eth0 <------> network
PC1:eth1 <------> PC2:eth0
PC1:eth2 <------> PC2:eth1

PC1 runs radvd to provide router advertisements to the network and a DHCPv6 server for stateful addresses. Each interface is configured on a separate subnet. PC2 runs a DNS server on eth0. PC2:eth1 is used as an IPv6 client for testing purposes. The connections from PC1 to PC2 are just crossover cables.I've created virtual machines of both PCs and have created 4 virtual adapters on the host machine for each of the local-only interfaces. Now I have this:

PC1:eth0 = HOST eth0
PC1:eth1 = HOST vboxnet0
PC1:eth2 = HOST vboxnet1

Ubuntu Networking :: Files Created In Samba Are Locked From Nfs & Vice/versa

Mar 2, 2010

I have just recently setup our network with an Ubuntu server which is being accessed by one Ubuntu workstation with nfs, & one XP workstation with Samba. Following instructions from the web, I set permissions like this:

sudo chmod 777 /media/Data sudo chown -R curley:curley /media/Data The problem is that files created in Samba are locked from nfs & vice/versa. I am assuming I need to add the nfs network share to the Curley group or use something more global than curley to make this work?

Samba is working ok from Ubuntu when browsing through Nautilus, but there is no access to shares when doing things like uploading or downloading files to the web (the "save file" window only shows local folders). So I guess I wouldn't mind just using Samba if I could map a folder in Samba to solve that problem.

General :: Auto-mount USB Drives Read-only

Oct 6, 2010

I'm currently setting up a laptop for my grandparents to use. They have never used a computer before, so I'm trying to make this as fool-proof as possible. The system will be setup with Ubuntu 10.10. In order to save them the hassle of having to unmount USB drives before disconnecting them, I would like to have all USB drives auto-mounted as read-only (possible use cases for now only include them getting data from people, not them copying anything to the drive). I have so far found that gnome-volume-manager is responsible for the handy auto-mount, but I didn't find any way to set options, like always mounting drives read-only.

Debian Hardware :: No Sound / Thumb Drives Read Only / No DVD PLayback

Jan 6, 2011

All of a sudden my Debian 5.05 system quits working in several different ways.I think it started after I was trying to set up Virtual Box. My first symptom was that when I was trying to convert a dd backup file to a virtual hard drive, the conversion program, part of the virtual box package, told me I was not part of the virtual box group. So I added myself. I could never get past this error message, so I gave up and figured I would google the answer later.

Next time I am on, my sound card does not work. The volume control in the Panel was a red X next to it and complains about the gstreamer not being present. After another round of google I find the brute force solution of giving everybody in every group rw access to everything in /dev/snd. This works. (My main user account was already part of the audio group. I added a new user and specifically added him to the audio group. Nothing. Only root had audio access.)

At about the same time I discovered I could no longer play DVDs. When the movie player starts, it says I may not have permission to play the movie. mplayer claims there is no stream found to handle url dvd://1Also when I add a thumb drive, the file system is read only.

Server :: GRUB Read Error After Adding SATA Drives?

Apr 2, 2010

I installed debian 5.0.4 server on a PC that has both IDE and SATA controllers. I used an IDE HD to install the OS. The input device was a USB DVD unit. The IDE drive showed as /dev/hda and the 4 SATA HDs showed as /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda3 and /dev/sda4. After the OS was installed the reboot started which brought up an error: GRUB GRUB Read Error

I then disconnected the SATA HDs and rebooted successfully. So no PROBLEMS with just the IDE drive connected, grub works fine. If I reconnect the SATA HDs though grub fails with:

GRUB GRUB Read Error

The problem originated when the installation got to the GRUB implementation. Here the installer engine asked me If I wanted GRUB to be installed on the MBR, to which I said YES. The installer had listed the IDE drive (/dev/hda) before the SATA drives (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd). After the installation finished and the machine was restarted, BIOS looked at the SATA drives first could not find the grub stages and it displayed an "Read Error".

After realising what was happening I looked at the BIOS settings to see if the HD booting sequence could be altered. The BIOS did indeed list the 4 SATA drives first and the IDE HD last. BUT it would not let me alter the booting sequence. So I was stuck with what the BIOS doing. So I decided I take the IDE drive out and create a 20G partition on the first SATA to accommodate the OS. So now everything works OK.

Ubuntu Networking :: Get Wireless Network Adapter To Be Read By 'Windows Wireless Drivers'

Nov 24, 2010

I recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).

1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal
