Feb 28, 2010i installed ubuntu yesterday and when i onned it today some update manger came with 244 pdates and its 249mb shall i get all of these of what?

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manger Hangs After Authentication
Dec 14, 2010First it took me a while to get ubuntu running along side windows7. But after a lil effort and random clicking. It loaded, was getting stuck at the flash screen. But thats not the problem. I go to the update manager and it show 201 updates available. I click install updates, It asks for authentication, i type in the password. then it kind of just freezes. Now im like okay maybe trying to install them all at once is to much for this computer to handle. So i tried to do one at a time, and same thing. So i tried to log onto Empathy to ask help from a friend, and it just starts to connect and doesn't stop.

Feb 1, 2011My Update Manager popped up letting me know that a new version/upgrade of Opera is available. But when I click on "Install Updates," a warning pops up stating that the upgrade/update is "not authenticated." I've been using and upgrading/updating to various versions of Opera for years, but I have never once received a message like this. I'm sure it's fine... But I worry. Should I? Why now do you think Ubuntu's Update Manager would alert me to something like this? Or is this all Opera's fault for not allowing authentication for their latest upgrade/update?

Nov 18, 2010Synaptic Package Manager failed with the following error:
E: Malformed line 55 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
With the error dialog as modal window, the Synaptic Package Manager main screen is disabled. As soon as I click "OK" to close the error dialog, Synaptic Package Manager shuts down right away.I don't know there is the "repository dialog" is to correct the problem as suggested.
Ubuntu :: Synaptic Package Manger - Cannot Change Proxy
Jul 29, 2010I am suddenly having problems with synaptic package manager. I go to change the proxy to my uni proxy (under settings>preferences>network) and when I click okay/apply it freezes. I've restarted and tried other things and it doesn't work.

I also used Bootup manager to speed up my boot, but I have enabled any network related services that I can find, to no end.

Mar 19, 2010This is an easy solve, I think. (I'm not having much luck with OpenSuse's one click install.) I installed screenlets using one click but can only start it via the command line. It never showed up in my Gnome menu system.
As an aside, I reverted to the old style gnome menu. I tried OpenSuse's updated Gnome menu but it seemed awkward. Is it just me?
Just noticed I misspelled manager. Is there a way to change the message header?

Mar 24, 2010I'm having a wireless issue (go figure) where I can't get to the internet, can get to my LAN just fine, but trying to ping anywhere on the net just gives me "network unavailable" message.One thing I've seen noted here time and again is people saying "Use Yast vs Network manager" when I go through the Yast Network Devices GUI it tells me it's using network manager, and I need to use ifup (if I want to use Yast), however I have no clue how to go about changing it from one to the other?
Currently I'm using hard-link to get all the updates and see if that will resolve my problems, but figured I'd learn how I'm supposed to switch it for the future.

I went to the kick of menu to find "File Manager" under system tools and it would not start from there either. I created a new folder on the desktop and tried opening it - it would not open. I can only assume its some sort of a bug and most likely occurred because of the recent computer update (I get regular notifications to update my system so I do it).

I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.

However my current kernel has been updated a while ago and is now 2.6.31-17. That obviously is more recent that that backport version. What should i do? By the way that update is from a PPA repository other that the default. I am wondering the update manager has no way to tell which kernel version i have at all? Should i actually go ahead with the installation?

May 2, 2010I started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I tried searching for the errors on the net and in the forums, and they're all somehow related to proxy servers. I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup.
Take note though, that I am able to install other softwares normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer. It's just these updates and Java:

Jun 1, 2010I am from India, and I tried to update my Ubuntu system today. Code: $sudo apt-get update The update failed because the connection to the India mirror timed out: Code: [URL] Could not connect to in.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (111.91.91.37). - connect (110: Connection timed out) I tried the update a few times, with the same result every time.
I had firestarter running at this time, and noticed that I would get new security events every time I tried an update. I checked the events list, and it turned out that the machine at the ip address 111.91.91.37 (the in.archive.ubuntu.com machine, to go by the above error message) had been trying to make connections to seemingly random ports on the machine every time I tried the update: see the attached screenshot. I then changed my repositories to the Main Server using Synaptic, and tried the update again (from the command-line). This time it worked without a hitch, and firestarter did not report any unwanted incoming connection. why is the India mirror trying to open connections that the Main server apparently does not need in order for me to do the update? Should I (we) be concerned?

Feb 11, 2011I was running 10.04 LTS and had decided to stick to the LTS versions as I'm now running my machine as a server and don't want to be updating regularly.Every time I logged in via SSH I got a message telling me there where packages to update including a security update. If I answer No, this message appears:

If Yes, it tries to download but immediately:

It has always installed the updates with no problems, until these 3 updates remain in pending installation status.
