Ubuntu :: Unable To Configure Quota System?

I am trying to enable quota on my /home directory for understanding how quota works. I have not made a separate partition for my /home. The logical name of the directory "/" is /dev/sda5 on my machine

I tried to search this on Google as well but didn't get any satisfactory results. I usually post questions only when I have do not get results by checking earlier threads on various forums. If you find I am going the wrong way then please show me the right track.

I installed Diskquota on CentOS 5.1 machine. I enabled quota for some user with 1 GB as both hard and soft limits, Grace period is 0. Every this is working fine if we work from normal user's login say (user1 who is a system user). If he exceeds 1GB its will restrict that saying quota exceeded. But, If root user copies some 500MB files into his workspace, and change the ownership of those files using following command
chown user1.user1 * ( * is 500 MB files).
Then quota is exceeded and it is showed using:
repquota /home
user1 +- 2039960 997020 997020 none 298 0 0
Here its showing as some 2GB.
Soft limit is 951 MB.
So, my problem is restrict quota from all possible ways, i.e., even if root does some copying and change permissions, it must tell that disc quota exceeded.

I am new Linux, but have already installed a new HDD in my PC and successfully installed Fedora 14. Unfortunately, I am unable to configure my system for dual boot and my PC always boots right up into Windows Vista which is the original OS on my original HDD. I have searched the web, but only find examples of splitting partitions and dual booting into different versions of Windows. I apologize for the simple question, but I am certain that someone in here can point me in the right direction. My intention is to migrate to Linux entirely, but want to learn Linux before completing a full migration.

I could not able to configure the default gateway ip address onto the system. i use the route command (" route add default gw 192.xxx.xxx.xxx eth0 ") to add a default gateway onto the routing table but it is "disappear" in the routing table when i had restart the service network.

I am a first time Linux user - though I've Unix and Windows experience. So though I can follow your most tech instructions, I'll need some hand-holding.
Need help getting my wireless network to work on my newly installed Oracle Linux on Dell laptop.
Not sure what wireless card is installed, or it's mac address (though I can boot into windows and get that info, I don't want to - it'll be kind of a let down if I can't fix it all thru Linux).
Install has detected a Broadcom wired card, but not the wireless. Funny thing is that it detected the Bluetooth.

I just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.
Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network
However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.
Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.
He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:

I switch on the PC and it loads the Grub splash screen. However, it does not automatically boot the top entry after two seconds as it's supposed to and just hangs. I hit enter to boot it and it attempts to but after a few seconds gives me the error "unable to mount file system....a maintenance shell will be started"
This occurred after I was using it and then everything suddenly froze up on me and I had to crash out Now this!

I am using ubuntu 8.10 ....
i am unable to configure my internet on it ..i have tried a lot of things, which i have are as follows...
1. i used these commands but unfortunately no result... sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.21 $ sudo route add default gw 192.168.1.1$ sudo vi /etc/resolv.conf this file is edited to enter ipadd etc....
2.Setting the ipaddress in system>admininstrator>network config
there i edited the properties of "Auto eth0" for my ip address, mask, and default gateway....
P.S: My internet connection is perfectly working fine in windows xp. Details shown in windows are :

It seems I need to agree to the terms of use, but I can't seem to actually agree to it. I can't click <Ok>, I've tried pressing enter, pressing y then enter, pressing ok then enter, and a few other things.

I have just installed Lubuntu (from Ubuntu). I would like to add a few items to the right-click menu. I tried doing it using ObMenu as well as directly by editing the configuration files in /home/{user}/.config/openbox, but the default remains unchanged (even after reloading the configurations from the right-click menu or rebooting). Could someone give detailed instructions (e.g. where should I add some apps so as to see on the right click applications list?). The default on my right-click are a file manager, a browser and a terminal.
Also, I dont see a way to edit the main menu (the one at the lower left corner of my screen) anymore, although I remember to have accessed it from the main menu somewhere.

I've been trying to configure Coriander on my 32-bit system (Ubuntu v10.04), but I've run into an issue that I've only found discussion boards for in French, a language I'm nowhere near fluent enough in to translate on a tech forum. When I run the ./configure command in the coriander folder, things run fine. Everything configures normally, and I move on. Environment: A 32-bit kernel RHEL5.3 system running on a virtual machine. The root(/) filesystem is on an LV.
Issue: Unable to resize the FS after extending the root LV since it is mounted. After extending the LV, online resizing of the FS was not supported and the root filesystem could not be unmounted while it was in use. On rebooting, I got a kernel panic error. In runlevel 1, I couldn't run chroot, couldn't find the /etc/fstab, root FS could not be mounted, fsck did not run (tried block 31 for second copy of superblock using dd count=1 bs=4k skip=31 seek=1 if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sda2), couldn't find any rpm on installation media to install unix-utils rpm. I have tried various rules, like opening port 53 for the DNS with little success. I finally figured that you need to set the source port to 53 and NOT the destination port.However, I have been unable to figure out what ports apt-get requires. The only way I get it to work is to accept everything in iptables.

I just installed Ubuntu this afternoon, and it has been working perfectly until i tried to install the flash plugin. My laptop froze and i had to unplug it to restart. Since then, whenever i try to log on, an error message appears saying that Gnome Communications (? i think thats what it said) center didn't configure properly and to contact the computer administrator.

this issue which has suddenly occurred on both my Desktop and my Laptop. When I try to configure an IP address to any interface I get the following error....

I get this for ethernet interfaces as well. I do not understand what is different as I was able to configure the ip address only the day before yesterday on the laptop..? The Desktop has had this issue for about 3 weeks now.

I can't configure the monitor. and the display.
I've tried with both the built in display configure and the Nvidia one. Can't choose 1600x900 on either one.
I either can't see all the display on the monitor, or it takes on some weird panning mode and looks like the display is about 2500x1500 or something.
Here's the xorg.conf file. Clearly it does not see the new monitor and the modes are wrong. These settings are for the previous monitor. How Can I fix this so that my display works properly? Thanks.

I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.
