I am trying to add a program that will allow me to play wmv files on my computer. I'm not sure what version of Ubuntu I am using but I keep getting a message that says: E:dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run'dpkg --configure -a'to correct the problem. E:_cache->open()failed,please report. When I try to run this in the terminal I get a message saying I need to be a superuser.
installing programs on ubuntu, you see i run ubuntu on my old time computer from around late 90's early 2000 and the internet port on the back is for old telephone lines but i no longer have these wires. So I decided to download the packages on my newer acer laptop, put them on a usb and plug it in, but i have found out that .tar.gz is nothing like the windows executable .exe and scince i'm quite new to linux i have no where to start.
P.S i have already tried installing in terminal but failed miserably...
I've tried compiling C++ programs with extension .cc and .cpp. I've tried compiling with gcc, g++ and even cc (with .cc extension files). Earlier (as g++ wasn't installed) i tried installing g++ (sudo apt-get install g++) for which i got the message "g++ has no installation candidate". Later from Synaptic i found it as g++-2.95 and installed it. I've also installed pentium-builder
Whenever i've tried to install "build-essential" (using apt-get and aptitude) i've got messages along the line of "no installation candidate". I've searched many posts and not got the answer for this. I've treid update and upgrade before installation, no use. I have all the repositories checked in software sources and the server as "main server". Now, the main problem is: (when trying to compile a .cpp file)
user@dell-desktop:~$ g++ hello.cpp Unable to exec g++.real: No such file or directory ser@dell-desktop:~$ gcc hello.cpp
i just installed the latest linux 11.04 and i want to install flash player and vlc so i can use the internet and watch music, videos with vlc. but the thing is when i tried installing adobe flash player from the Ubuntu Software Center i got an error which goes like this.A windows pops up when i click the button install.(but i managed to install wine from to terminal)
I'm unable to change startup programs. If I try and add or remove a program, any changes I have made seem to undo themselves. I suspect it might have something to do with being unable to save the session, but I really don't have a clue.
Just in case it makes a difference: I'm actually running Mint (Helena).
I am facing some unusual issue while trying to run any WIN32 applications through WINE in my Ubuntu Lucid AMD64 desktop. As you may see from the attached image, my system reports that executable bit is blocked.I am unable to run any Win32 applications after this.Though I dont use any Windows applications from the day I switched to Ubuntu. But I am keeping this ready just in case if I have to run any ever
There are a few programs (such as lillypad) that are not listed in the software manager that I would love to install. I'm confused as how to do so. When i go on lillypad's website there is no direct extraction link, it just lets me save the source code and tells me to compile. I'm brand new to linux, I'mreally confused and need some getting off on the right track. Also, I downloaded amarok and tuxguitar, whcih both output no sound when I try and run them. Amarock wont play and of my mp3s and just skips to the end of this list, and tux guitar just runs though without outputting any sound.
I work on Fedora 9 and I'm unable to compile my c++ program using the make in the terminal as well as in the IDE-Anjuta.although 'make' works fine with C programs,I get an error that g++ command is not found whenever I try it with C++ programs.
I am having a problem I have never encountered before. When I try to install programs, I get a failure to compile error in configure. I have tried to install Prozilla, Prozgui, and Aria2, but I get the same message for each. The message follows code...
i recently installed fedora on my eeepc1000hd and im having problems installing simple programs. for example i download limewire or flash player for ..... and when they download they open up in the archive manager instead of opening up witht the install client.
The Ext 4 file system of the partition (dev/sdb1) is corrupted. When I seek to repair this using the boot repair tool it is unable to resolve this. I admit that I don't fully understand the problem - except that I'm unable to open and use programs.
I have been using windows operating system for a long time now, but I am not well familiar with linux. Whenever I used to install Windows, I used to install the corresponding audio drivers(in order to listen to the music). The problem I am facing is that I do not know how to install the audio drivers(if they really exist in linux Mint 10 operating system). As a result I am not able to listen to any audio file due to lack of corresponding audio driver programs. make proper configurations settings so that I can listen to audio files in Linux Mint version 10.
Is there a way to specifically run certain programs right in ram when they load up? On average I usually have 2Gig ram free (out of 4gig total). For example, hulu desktop, usage hog, I thought that forcing it to load into ram whenever hulu desktop is started may improve performance of the app. So, is there a program in ubuntu that can specifically control what programs can load directly load into ram when started?
I'm brand-spanking new to Ubuntu and so far am greatly enjoying this magnificent OS. Though, after attempting to install Wine, I now this error when trying to install any program: 'E:Type 'main' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-wine-ppa-lucid.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.'
Here is the source list where I'm assuming the error is coming from:

I started using Ubuntu a few days ago due to a classmates recommendation, and I simply cannot get this program I need for class to install. Or if it does, I don't know how to make it work.
I've got to install VMWare Server 2.0 for my class so we can make virtual computers and what not. But, no matter what I do I can't get it to install. Whenever I try to install it like I was told on various websites (here's one for examples sake [URL], I do this: sudo ./vmware-install.pl and get this: Can't install perl script "./vmware-install.pl" : No such file or directory
I've tried putting in stuff like home/computername/Desktop/vmware-install.pl, but I still get the same problem. I've racked my brain and my browser trying to figure this out, but I've had no luck.
I have recently installed (& updated) Lucid.I have also downloaded & installed GNUstep and Beagle. How do I add these launchers to Applications->Programming, etc?I know the launchers are all in /usr/share/applications but there must be an easier way than editing a new .desktop file by hand?
Ok I have been installing a few programs lately and some of them try to load but do not load.I installed Mixxx DJ software and when I try to load it for example it goes down to the task bar and sits there doing nothing then it just goes away.
I don't like KDE's program (like Amarok or Vlc or kaffein and any KDE's program) cus i think KDE's programs are mane argument to slow down speed of my ubuntu.
I'd rather a absolute gnome's environment without any KDE efficacious.
I'd rather to remove all KDE's program from my source.list if possible.
i have a server with 2.5T of hdd space, ram to boot, and a decent cpu. I also have a desktop made about 8 years ago... with a 20G HDD.
The server runs, ubuntu server, the desktop runs, ubuntu desktop, (how normal...). Anyway, i don't want to clog my desktop up with lots of programs, if they can be run from the server to save space.
Programs i had in mind: OpenOffice -> Full suit Audacity GIMP
