Ubuntu :: Stress Test CPU / GPU While Monitoring The Temperatures
Oct 5, 2010
After turning off the overclocking (When I actually turned it off, I realized it didn't really make a noticeable difference) of my CPU and lowering the fans of my PC, I would like to stress test the GPU/CPU, and obviously also check the temps while doing so. The fans on my PC were previously so loud you couldn't even have a conversation on the phone while in the same room as the computer, and I just now realized how much I can actually lower them... But I don't want to lower them too much, obviously.
So, anyway, because of these reasons I would like to stress test my CPU/GPU while monitoring the temperatures. I'd need software for doing so, Linux or Windows doesn't really matter, I have both. Also, I need to know what minimum/maximum temperatures that are okay.

I am trying to use GKrellM [URL].. to monitor my system's fans/temperatures (I am trying to undervolt the fans a bit to make the systems quieter), but there don't seem to be any sensors available. I have lm_sensors installed.

Just put an old desktop to work by installing Puppy on it. I have another HDD that I think didn't work very good, so I'm gonna plug it in and test, but I don't know what to use to stress it.

This is a general hardware question, but I trust the Linux community to be more clueful than those *other* OS users. I just picked up a new external hard drive. Back in the 8-bit era of the 1980's, there was a general consensus, that may have been an urban legend, that if a piece of hardware were faulty and was going to fail, then it would fail within the first $NUMBER hours of use, now $NUMBER varied from 100 to 500, depending who you talked to.
While the above *seems* to make sense, does it, indeed, make sense? Be that as it may, given that I do subject the new hard drive to big buckets of read/writes and it does not fail, does anyone have any opinion on whether this is any sort of a guarantee that the new hard drive is less likely to be faulty and that I can feel more secure of its ability to not melt into a pile of slag on my desk?

pondering about cooling solutions and a little daydream of over-clocking, I thought about what happens to mineral oil at low temperatures. Temperatures the same as liquid nitrogen. I had an idea to have a column of liquid nitrogen sitting on the CPU, nothing new. But then to drive out moisture and dissipate heat better, immersing the rest of the mother board in mineral oil. The only problem is is that I am unsure of what happen to the oil at such low temperatures; I would believe that is get thick or forms a jelly. Thus two questions are posed here:

This morning gkrellm updated from 2.3.4-1 to 2.3.5-2 and now the CPU temperatures aren't displayed. I've rerun sensors-detect and restarted module-init-tools, but the temperatures still don't display. If I run sensors from a terminal, the CPU core temperatures are displayed correctly. Has anyone else seen this?

I'm using a PC (desktop) and I replaced the motherboard two days ago; (I had an intel and replaced it with an asrock G31M-S). All other components (processor, case, video card, memory modules and wireless card) are all the same I used before. Now, the problem is I'm having high temperatures; if I go to the BIOS, it shows about 43C - 47C (about 103 F), and 32C for the motherboard (91 F). On windows I use a program which came with the motherboard, named OCtuner, and it shows pretty much the same temps, and sometimes hit 50 C, just by browsing the net (although this program is used to overclock, I'm not overclocking yet). On linux I use lm-sensors and the computer temp gnome applet; both show 58 C - 61 C just by browsing the net and listening music (?!); it has reached 70 C even!. Also, on windows I've had a couple of sudden reboots when browsing the net, but I'm not sure if it's the motherboard who's rebooting the system to avoid overheating, or if it's windows (or the OCtuner app).
Now I have some questions: 1) is it possible that debian shows more than 10 C in comparison to the BIOS and windows, or is it just that debian (or linux in general) causes the cpu to heat more? 2) in case the cpu is actually overheating (as it seems to be), how could I solve this? Should I reinstall the cpu (taking it out, cleaning, reapplying thermal paste and installing it again, etc)?

I'm running CentOS 5.4 on an Atom-based motherboard with a quiet, low-power PSU. As the only fan left is a 40mm fan to cool the Intel 945GC chip, I'd like to run a utility to monitor the 945GC and HD temperatures. Ideally, it should be able to run the 945GC fan faster when it's needed.

I'm going to be installing Vinux which is Linux for the Visually Impaired, based on Ubuntu, onto most any computers I can get my hands on to give to the VI community around my area. I'd like to know what would be a good method to stress test each computer to ensure that each one will operate at an adequate speed without freeze-ups. Sorry, I can't be specific about the computers. I'll be taking whatever gets donated from the public and from businesses, desktops and laptops, whatever comes my way. I don't want to send out any headaches to anyone by giving them a dog-tired slow or a freezing computer that won't even operate.

You can try to start the mysqld daemon with:

I've just tested my new (actually old as hardware) nodes in computing cluster. Use for this http://systester.sourceforge.net/. But in params for tester above 32M system refuses to allocate memory in spite of there are about 250M free. It's because it too defragmented so i cannot run such tester. In future actually will be tasks with big linear memory queries, so is it possible to defrag RAM after every system loading? For this moment can you also point out for me other testers weith big memory queries but without linear manner?

I have been assigned a project in which I have to test File System stress testing using "Fsstress" tool. I have to do this for a local file server. I don't have any idea as how to and what to install FSSTRESS on the Linux machine. I searched an rpm package and installed it on File server however, I don't have any idea about the commands and working of the FSSTRESS. My task would be successful if I can just run few stress testing test cases using FSSTRESS and come up with test results.

My problem is the following : I have a certain Internet connection for a certain network. So many people are sharing this network. What i need is a software on Linux (preferably Ubuntu) that will enable me to monitor the bandwidth usage PER IP Like : ip x.x.x.x using 20Kb upload 200Kb download , connected to this site for example.. The main goal is to know from which IP is the high Upload traffic or download traffic is coming , because i have a certain quota and I'm always getting over the quota (in upload and download) and end up paying extra for the ISP , so i would need to know who is using lots of upload/download bandwidth .

I started a 'dd copyng' of one disk drive to another. Both disks are hooked to a remote machine and I initiated the dd command by ssh_ing into it.I have to shut down the box from which i initiated the ssh session. Is there any way I can keep monitoring the status (shell script)of the copy process, ie know when the dd command terminates and whether it terminated successfully .I could then ssh into the macine from another box and still know the status.

I have been running a webserver for a time now. And for fun I thought I would use Nagios for monitoring it. But the installation instruction says install this on webserver01 and that on webserver02. I only have one server and want to monitor it remotely from a simple browser. Is this possible or does Nagios need at least two separate servers? Can't it just run it on my one server?
