Ubuntu :: Software Installation Via Terminal

Jun 13, 2010

I bought a laptop in asia while travelling and to save money it had linux rather than windows installed, and I have been learning as I move around. Unfortunately I don't have access to the root user because the people in the shop I bought it set a password to the root without telling me and before I learnt about the root etc I was already far away. Anyway, I've been trying to install Avast! for linux, I have GNU bash, version 3.2.33, and I downloaded the Ubuntu .deb file. On the avast website it said I should go into the terminal and use the dpkg command but when I tried that it said command not found. I tried install and it asked me for file destination and file source. I don't really know what the specific names of the folders are, its currently stored in my downloads.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Nvidia Driver Installation - Reboots Straight Into Terminal

Oct 15, 2010

I have been bashing my head against the keyboard for over 6 hours now i just got a brand new asus ul30v it uses Nvidia geforce G 210M.

I went straight to installing ubuntu 10.10 on the whole disc. when the installation was complete i was happy and logged in. only seconds after i logged in i was promted that i was recomended to install a driver for my graphic card, for 3d and such. so i followed the installation and was asked to reboot. so i did. but then ubuntu booted straight into fullscreen terminal.

While being in this terminal i have tried to purge and reinstall GDM amongst endless other things, including rebooting several times.

Not being able to do anything about it, i reinstalled, and repeated the installation of the driver. same story over again.

Bottom line is i have rebooted close to 30 times, and reinstalled over 5 times. ive tried installing from the terminal (excactly the same story). tried to download it from their homepage, then install it (couldn't install it because i had to turn off driver X and "terminate all OpenGL applications", wich i dont know how to do. tried googling it, but ended up worse than before..[url]

Im guessing i cant install the driver at all with ubuntu 10.10? i havent tried it with older ubuntu versions because, of course, i wanted the newest version.

I have barely been using ubuntu before, although i've had it dualbooted.

I have found alot of posts with people getting stuck in terminal on boot, but none of the solutions that worked for them worked for me, probably because they had different problems than me.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update From 9.04 To 9.10 From Terminal?

Jul 1, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 as a VMWare image and I'd like to upgrade to 9.10. However, when I click on the Upgrade button in the Update Manager, a dialog pops up and says "Could not find the release notes. The server may be overloaded.". I doubt the server is overloaded though. 9.04->9.10 is still supported, even though 10.04 is out, right? Is it possible to upgrade from the terminal using sudo aptitude? Updating applications and libraries from the Update Manager works fine, but despite this I'm suspecting that the network proxy configuration is somehow causing this. I've added the proxy address in System->Preferences->Network Proxy, in the Synaptic Package Manager, in .bashrc and .profile.

Ubuntu :: Bash Broken, Lost Functionality In Terminal (gnome-terminal)?

Dec 10, 2010

Linux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"

In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.

P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!

Ubuntu :: Can't Turn On Terminal Bell In Gnome-terminal Using Remote Screen Session With Irssi

Nov 6, 2010

I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.

My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.

My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.

I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc

And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.

No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.

I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install Packages Via The Terminal?

Feb 12, 2010

Running:
ASUS Laptop X71SL series
GeForce 9300M GS 512 MB
Ubuntu Karmic

I can't install packages via the terminal. For example: sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Doesnt work. It gives me:
Lser paketlistor... Frdig
Bygger beroendetrd
Lser tillstndsinformation... Frdig
E: Kunde inte hitta paketet compizconfig-settings-manager

Swedish there hehe, but basically it says the it couldnt find the the package named "compizconfig-sett.This problems occurs in several situations. Every single package i try except "upgrade" fails to find a package.

Also, the package manager "Ubuntu Software Manager" and Synaptic arent giving me any solutions. Same problems. Packages arent available and such. I have a working internet connection and the GPU drivers are installed. Everything is updated. sudo apt-get install update/upgrade is done and also done in the general update manager.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Terminal View After Update To 11.04?

May 3, 2011

After the update to 11.04 I don't see the non-graphical terminal view any more. I run a fully encrypted system that requires password entry after the grub boot option selection. I can blindly type in my password and the system boots fine into the KDE logon screen. However, I can't see any terminal output when I use ALT-F1 to go to the non-graphical shell. It is there though, because I can blindly type in my login info and run commands from this "hidden" shell.

how I can get back my non-graphical display?

When I boot the old kernel, everything works as expected. No strange black screen but the usual text console.
