I'm getting a really low speed (2-3 mbps) while transferring data to my USB drive and external hard drive. I've heard this problem's there in Karmic but not in Jaunty but i have Jaunty and yet I'm facing this problem.
View 3 RepliesI am running ubuntu 10.4 lts desktop and ubuntu 9.10 server with the gui active. On both of these machines the data transfer rates over usb and lan have slowed down quite considerably. Also over multiple devices, not the same hardware everytime I try to transfer something.

If i copy a file (say a movie or large file) from my primary hard drive (80 gig WD formatted to ext3) to a usb drive it transfers very slowly, about 2 mb/s. But if I copy a file off my secondary internal drive (40 gig seagate formatted to ntfs) it transfers full speed (25-30 mb/s) Its also very slow transfering between internal hard drives (again, no more than 5 mb/s) I checked and as far as i can tell both drives are running in DMA mode. Any reason my primary seems to be causing this bottleneck? it seems to preform fine otherwise (as it is the drive with my ubuntu installation on it)

What seems to be happening is it will float right along until it gets to the last couple of megs and then just sit there for a few minutes. The larger the file the longer it sits there. I am having the problem with both an external 1 gig usb HDD and two separate thumb drives. All of which have been verified as functional and fast under other systems. All of the drives are formatted in NTFS for portability in the field. I also do not believe this to be a hardware issue as it does it on my daily driver as well as my laptop.

I am running dual boot Ubuntu and windows 7 but have decided to ditch windows and go permanently with Ubuntu. How do I save my data files (email addresses etc.) to an external hard drive for downloading back on to my laptop when I have reformated it.

It hovers around 1.5 MB/s and steadily slows from there. It tells me it will take 150+ hours to transfer 400 GB of data.
I have a AMD quad core processor and 8 gigs of ddr3 ram... USB 2.0... I feel this should go much faster.

My father installed Kubuntu to his external hard drive to try it out, however, it is running extremely slowly. It takes a good minute and a half to boot to the Plasma desktop and it even seems to run faster off of the LiveCD.His system easily meets the specifications to run Kubuntu (4 gigs of RAM, decent NVIDIA graphics card) yet it slows to a crawl immediately upon booting. Does anyone know how to fix this? The hard drive is a Western Digital MyBook, 475GB model.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.04, and i recently purchased an tandberg LTO-4 SAS tape drive. I want to access it and backup data on it. Do I simply just connect plug it into the server,and I should be able to backup/transfer data to the tape drive? Or are there intermediate steps before I can do that. So I just reinstalled OpenSUSE 11.2 and I went from having 20-30 mbps speed to and from my 1 tb usb ntfs external hard drive to having about 1 mbps transfer speeds now. Is there any suggestions for how I can fix this? I know it can go faster, I just need to figure out how. and would setting acpi=off at boot affect this?

I've got an external hard drive with one large data partition on it. I also have four computers to connect it to (individually, not at the same time). Three machines are running Slackware and one is running Ubuntu 9.10. I need to be able to just plug the drive into whichever machine, mount it (preferably to the same location each time) and not have to worry about user permissions and such. Do I just chmod 777 all the files and folders or is there a better method for different 'users' to access the same partition? And how about mounting to the same location each time?
Now the second part of my question I'm pretty sure I'm not able to do but just in case..... is there any way to encrypt the information safely and make it compatible with a Windows XP machine?
Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!
When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!
This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.
(Just to clarify: This has nothing to do with the 11.4 mount problem with external NTFS drives that is stickied in this forum.)
I have this 2 year old WD Elements drive (500GB) that is NTFS formatted and that I've used for backup all this time, until a few months ago it failed to be recognized by any computer. The power supply is working, so I first requested a new cable, which didn't help, and now I received a replacement. But still I would like to save some of the data on the hard disc. I need to have this figured out within this week as I have to return the old drive, or they will charge me for the new.
So far, the only software to still recognize the drive was a WD analytical tool for Windows. It didn't find any problems or show any error messages as far as I could tell. They recommended using testdisk to recover the data, but testdisk doesn't recognize the hard drive in the first place. I also tried KParted, but no success.
I was introduced to Ubuntu about a year ago and recently decided to come back to using the OS. I now dual boot it with Windows XP Home. My former setup was with Wubi but now I have it installed on an actual partition. (The Wubi install, for whatever reason, had little internet problems.) I use wireless internet, and though my network card was recognized out of the box and can connect to my network, the Internet is very slow. It takes almost a minute to look up Google. Also, Firefox will often report that it cannot find the server for whatever website I try to look up, after trying to connect to it/look it up. I also cannot access the web configuration page for my router. (192.168.1.1). The network app reports that I often have a signal strength of 40% or lower. The following is my hardware/internet:

I am the only Linux computer on my network. (There is no encryption on my network. I know there should be. but my parents are not very computer literate and they are the ones who have access to the network. It is easier just to go without.)
I have tried disabling ipv6, setting custom DNS server names under ipv4, and setting the wlan rate (or something similar) to 1492. Nothing works. This does not seem to be a network problem because my internet works fine in Windows, and I can access the configuration page for my router to change channels, PPP, etc..
I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.
Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.
Where does iTunes store its stuff?
Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?
Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?
Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?
Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?
Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?
Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.
My system will not start. It reaches "Grub loading stage 1.5" and "Grub loading please wait....", then the machine tries to restart from scratch. I have tried using my bootable Heron CD but it gets to "Loading Kernel 100%" then tries to restart. I used the Normal option; the other options do not seem to work. Other symptoms are that the wireless mouse has been double clicking for one btton press and resuming from hibernation has often led to the system freezing within a minute or two. Memtest shows the RAM to be OK.

No heavy CPU usage when restoring from minimized and a general performance boost were the results of that use.But recently made an upgrade and realized that xserver-xorg-core package (check it from synaptic manager) has been upgraded to a jaunty-proposed version and the problems started to appear again!So using Synaptic I selected this package and hit CTRL-E key in order to choose the nobackfill version. This way things got back to normal!

if i want to copy a file (or folder) bigger than 250mb my laptop literally gives up until the file transfer is complete. opening up a terminal via keyboard shortcut gives my an idea how long a ice age can last.this happens with ext3 to ext3; ext3 to fat32; ext3 to ntfs and ntfs to ntfs.today i wanted to backup some files (12GB ~4k files) the first 4gb ran with 20MB/s (all open applications grayed out). after 2h i came back to see that only 6GB where done.
Is there any solution for slow file transfers experienced when copying files to usb in 10.04?

It is on an HP 2.3ghz Pent 4 with 512 mb of RAM.I had previously installed Ubuntu and Kubuntu in a dual boot with XP (actually had a triple boot with XP, Ubuntu, and a BETA Windows 7) for a while, Grub got messed up so I ended up wiping it and just put my XP back on it. I have been intimidated by the command line and when thinking server, I tried the 30 day deal with windows Home server, its OK but it's $100.00 for the permenant version.
Anyway, I manned up to the challenge, installed Ubuntu server, set up as SSH and Samba. I administer from PuTTy and WEBMIN, I tried TightVNC but the GUI seemed very useless, so on a reinstall I went headless.The problem is I have alot of MP3 files I want to transfer back to the server that I had previously transfer to and back again from the Windows server, it was sceamin' fast compared to this. I have found threads talking about using NTFS, I have the EX3, or whatever the Ubuntu format is. Could that cause slow transfers, from NTSF through Samba to Ubuntu?
Transfers went from minutes to hours when I went from kernel 2.6.31-19 to kernel 2.6.31-20. I booted back to -19 and its works great again.

Now no matter how i transfer if its from HDD to HDD or to SSD i never get more then 18-20MB/sec, i just tried booting to my live CD and was able to transfer with 24-25MB/sec
This is really slow, since the worst (2.0TB) can do a minimum of 30 READ

I purchased an AZiO BTD-V201 USB 2.0 Micro Bluetooth Adapter for my ubuntu 10.10 system and the bluetooth transfer time is very slow. I am trying to transfer files to my xoom tablet. A 157mb folder is stated to take 1 hour and 30 minutes. Is there anyway that I can speed this up. The device is less than 3 feet from my pc.
