Ubuntu Networking :: Two Ethernet Ports And Share Internet Via A Switch

Apr 30, 2011

Just recently got a new rig, and was wondering, is there a way to share internet via a switch. I understand the problems with switches is that they dont assign IPs like routers do, but if my ubuntu machine worked like a router by assigning IPs, could it work? Current setup is as such. I have one ubuntu machine with 1 ethernet port (this shall be the main preferably) 1 mac with a single ethernet port 1 modem with a single ethernet port that cannot assign more than one IP address. And a 5 port switch. Would it be possible to place the modem into the switch, get the ubuntu machine to receive the IP address, and broadcast all other address' to everyone else via the same switch and ethernet cable?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Can't Get The Win7 Boxes To See Shares On It

May 7, 2011

Home network with 3 Win7 boxes and one elderly Fedora 11 box (heloise) which has been running Samba well for several years. I've just built and started configuring a new Fedora 14 box (abelard) to replace heloise, but can't get the Win7 boxes to see shares on it.

Windows Explorer on the Win7 boxes can see abelard, and they can see the two shares I've created on it, but if I double-click on a share I get the "Windows cannot access" dialog.

I've set a Samba password for one user (ralph), the same as that user's login password, and set the "smb password file" entry to point to the resulting .tdb file.

All IP addresses are static (via Static DHCP), everybody can ping everybody, I can ssh from a Win7 box to abelard via Putty, and the network operates cleanly in all other respects. Here's my smb.conf:

# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from UNKNOWN (127.0.0.1)
# Date: 2011/05/07 11:25:27
[global]
workgroup = MSHOME

Ubuntu Security :: Configure The Share And Folder So That The Win7 Client Can Create Files And/or Folders In The Share?

Jan 15, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

Server :: Can Mount WinXP Share But Not Win7 Share In Fstab

Jun 8, 2010

this has happened in different distros, so far i have tried slack, arch, and mint at work i have an xp box with a shared folder i created. on my linux box i setup fstab as follows

Code:

//winxp/temp$ /home/user/temp cifs rw,uid=1000,gid=1000,credentials=/home/user/.creds 0 0

this gets mounted correctly and i can read/write the shared folder at home i have a win7 box that i create a share on and use the exact same code in fstab, but it wont mount the share. i get something like permission denied or access denied is there a difference in how winxp and win7 share folders? my usernames on the linux boxes match those of my windows boxes at each location. i have given my win accounts full access and control over the win shares.

Ubuntu :: Share Files With Windows Boxes?

Mar 5, 2011

I am having trouble sharing files between Ubu and Win boxes. We have seval boxes hooked up to the same router. XP and Vista boxes are part of the same workgroup (lets call it FOO). No domain. It is a simple home network. Each Win box has its own name. Win boxes can see each other (by clicking Network icon from control panel). Shared resources can be accessed by providing user name and password. Now I need to make Maverick box a part of the the same workgroup. All group members should be able to access Maverick's shared recourse by providing user name and password and vice versa.

I installed samba (is that what I need?), but couldn't get things working yet. Official docs aren't very clear. What is the server name and domain? Win boxes don't need any of that. I can just click network icon and go into any computer I want. What are the steps to setup Ubu box similarly? Samba docs say edit smb.conf file. I have 2 in my box :

/usr/share/samba/smb.conf
/etc/samba/smb.conf

Which one is for editing. Where do I put FOO (our work-group name)? How to set permissions?

General :: Share Folders In LAN With Only Linux Boxes

Nov 1, 2010

I have tried to find a simple "how to". People testify how simple sharing over Linux networks is, but I just can't make it.I have a desktop with Mint LXDB on it. My wife has a laptop with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx connected with a wireless LAN to a D-Link router.

But I can't open mine from her laptop. My aim is to connect her to a backup station connected to my computer. I have been looking into https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo. It is six pages long, complicated and i can't make it work.If networking in Linux should be so simple and native, there must be a better way..I hope.

Ubuntu Networking :: Bizarre Wifi - All Boxes Can't Access The Internet?

Jul 12, 2010

Problem with this bizarre Wifi problem. I have searched and searched and cannot find a solutions. Unfortunately this affects 3 computers in my household. And as the resident amateur Linux tech support/Linux advocate, I will be held responsible if I don't figure out how to fix this quick. After some extensive playing around, this is the situation. I have this problem on Ubuntu 9.10, Mint 9 (based on Ubuntu 10.04) and PC Linux OS 2010.:

- About a week ago the wireless network I use stopped working. There was a major power failure on our block during this period. No idea if there was a connection. Since then, I have been able to connect, but I am no longer able to access the internet. I can ping my own IP and my router, but no website (niether by IP not URL).

- When I booted my computer in Windows, it connected to the internet. My neighbours (whose network I am using) are also windows users, and are able to access the internet without problems.
- I have found exactly the same problem on my wife's laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 and on a Live CD of PC Linux OS 2010
- I am still able to log into all other wireless networks without problems.

I am perplexed. Is it possible for a wireless network to prevent internet access to linux computers? And inadvertently? I tried disabling IPv6 (which wasn't being used anyhow), but this didn't make a difference. I also tried manually entering an IP address and other network details into the network settings.

Server :: Accessing Win7 Share From Ubuntu

Aug 26, 2010

I have created a share on a Windows XP VM and a share on Ubuntu, both access each other fine without a hitch. On my Windows 7 net book I can access shared files on Ubuntu, but cannot access a share on Windows 7 via Ubuntu. So I figure the cause of the problem is a certain configuration in Windows 7.

Also another question. On my net book I have IIS setup for hosting media files onto my local network so that I can use my PS3 browser to view them on my television. What software can I use in Linux to achieve this?

Ubuntu Networking :: Nautilus Can't Connect To Win7 Share?

Jan 18, 2010

My Ubuntu Desktop (9.10, 64-bit) VM can't connect to my Windows 7 (64-bit, Ultimate) File Share using Nautilus. I enter "smb://<comuterName>" in the address bar and then it comes up with a password dialog (see screenshot) and then after entering the correct login info, the dialog disappears for a second or two but then reappears again. The dialog always comes back up and the share is never mounted. Connecting from an XP box on the network to the windows 7 share works just fine. Connecting from the Ubuntu machine to the windows 7 share using the appropriate 'smbmount' command works just fine. Connecting from the Ubuntu machine (using the nautilus GUI) to the XP box (password protected) works just fine. Then I turned off password protection in Win7, rebooted the win7 machine, and still all of the above tests turned out the same. And the Ubuntu machine still doesn't connect to the windows share using the nautilus GUI, and still displays the password dialog even though no password is required anymore. I tried using smbclient to view the shares, here is the output (not sure if I should be trying something else using the smbclient program):eddie@eddie-ubuntu:~$ smbclient -L eddie-win7 Enter eddie's password: session setup failed: SUCCESS - 0

I'd like to know how to connect Ubuntu to the windows 7 share using the nautilus GUI. If it's a bug, I'd like to file it (I think it is). But first I would like some direction trouble-shooting to make sure it is in fact a bug. (I think I read elsewhere on this forum that someone connected Karmic to win7 share, so maybe it's not a reproducible bug. But then again, maybe they weren't using 64-bit Karmic...)

However from Xubuntu I was able to read and write no problem. So the question is... why can't windows 7 read and right like xubuntu? I have 2 win7 machines and both were denied writing to the share folder... I'm by no means an expert.. I setup the share using ubuntu server guide pdf... not sure if its done correctly maybe someone here knows off hand what kind of permissions would be causing this.

Networking :: Iptables + Squid + Dansguardian - Boxes Will Act As A INTERNET Firewall + Filtering?

Jan 14, 2011

is this possible on 2 Linux boxes will act as a INTERNET Firewall + Filtering: 1st PC = CENTOS 5.5 functions as a firewall using iptables with two NICS 1=ETH0 connected to internet with a public ip and 1=ETH1 with ip address of 10.0.0.1 connected to the 2nd PC Centos 5.5 with squid/dansguardian with ip address of 10.0.0.2

2nd PC = Centos 5.5 functions as a squid + dansguardian internet filtering with 2 NICS 1=ETH0 with ip address of 10.0.0.2 connected to the ETH1 of the 1st PC with ip address of 10.0.0.1 and 2nd ETH1=connected to LAN (172.16.1.0/24)

does this make sense? this might be confusing but I just want to try this, to protect incoming ssh from our previous Sys admins who intended to enter the LAN 172.16.1.0/24 network. And also to confuse them that they have to pass through 10.0.0.1 - 2.

Fedora Servers :: Cannot Connect Win7 And Mac0S 10.6 Computers To Samba Share

Jan 3, 2010

I just recently constructed a computer to create a nice Fedora Linux server to replace a Mac Mini server that I have been using for a few years. I'm attempting to create a Samba share for my machines, a Windoze 7 machine as well as a couple MacOS 10.6 machines. I've set up Samba, started the service, allowed Samba in the firewall, and used system-config-samba to set up a share with a user. I created a User called "space", and a share /media/peliculas/Movies (a mounted hard drive). When I type in \IP_ADDRESS in the address bar in windows 7, I get the option to log in. I log in correctly and I see two directories "space" and "Movies." Unfortunately when I click on one of them I get the following error message:

Windows cannot access \IP_ADDRESSMovies Check the spelling of the name. Otherwize, there might be a problem with your network. To try and identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. I also get something similar when I attempt to connect with my mac machine. Using "Connect to Server" I type in: smb:\IP_ADDRESS, and login, I have the option to mount "Movies" or "space." If I select any of these, I get the following error message: There was an error connecting to the server "IP_ADDRESS." Check the server name or IP addres, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.

Also, if I type 'smbclient -U space -L IP_ADDRESS' I can see the "Movies" in the "Sharename." At this point I'm not sure what else to do, and have been trying to figure this out for the last few days (losing sleep due to being baffled). The only thing that I can think of is that I have something wrong with the smb.conf file. Here is what it currently displays:

Global Settings

workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = Samba Server Version %v
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50

[code].....

One last thing, when I check the log files, there are error messages that state: smbd/service.c:1009(make_connection_snum) '/home/space' does not exist or permission denied when connecting to [peliculas] Error was Permission denied --Windoze 7 and MacOS 10.6 log files

OpenSUSE Network :: Masquerad Internet Using Knetwork Manager - Share The Internet Connection To A Desktop

Jul 5, 2011

OpenSuse 11.4 Asus Netbook 1000H Following other members in the forums I have installed Opensuse 11.4 on the Netbook. In the early days Ubuntu Netbook Remix worked well for me. But this has been discarded, and the "one size fits all" Ubuntu had become slow and cumbersome. So..... onto my post. Opensuse is working well. The install went beautifully.

It detected the Wireless Internet and I am able to get on line. I also need to share the Internet connection to a desktop. This is done via a small network switch. Thus far I cannot do this. I tried to use ifup to configure a static ip but this busted my Wireless configuration. I went back to knetwork manager. Then I tried to set up the wired network using knetwork manager and under IPV4 "share" the connection. But this blanks out any possiblity of a static address and substitutes dhcp. My desktop cannot ping the this dhcp address. Ubuntu had this thing called Firestarter? - from memory. This configured the system to sharing the network.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Stops When LAN Switch Is Switched ON

Jul 29, 2010

My PC is connected to an modem (DHCP) with IP 192.168.1.21 on eth0 Internet works perfectly I have installed an additional LAN card and configured it as eth1 with IP of 192.168.0.1 When I connect this LAN card to a LAN switch which in turn is connected to 6 other PCs, the internet stops working. As soon as I switch OFF the LAN switch, I am able to access internet. The IP addresses of the other PCs are configured as 192.168.0.2 etc. with gateway as 192.168.0.1 and DNS same as the DNS on the external interface. I can ping 192.168.0.1 from the LAN but neither LAN nor the main PC can access net. I was planning to Masquerade and NAT the other computers without using squid

My setup is as follows

ISP - Modem(192.168.1.1) - Ubuntu desktop 9.04(external interface eth0 192.168.1.21 & internal interface eth1 192.168.0.1) - switch - LAN (comprising of Ubtuntu 9.04, 9.10, 10.4 & XP machines with IP 192.168.0.2 - 8 and gateway of 192.168.0.1) I did NAT as per [URL]
This worked perfectly well 1 day Next day onwards whenever the LAN switch is "ON" the main Ubuntu wudnt get internet and the internet connection would work only when the LAN switch is turned "OFF". Even if all the PCs in LAN were to be switched off, the main Ubuntu would behave similarly i.e. internet would work only when switch isn't connected to it or switched off.
