Feb 10, 2010running a Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop in the living room with a LOT of files. I've tried all week to get this working, and can't tell where the problem is. I want to make a music share that will: Allow guests, but as read-only Allow me to mount in Windows 7 with the user 'thecheeks' Give user thecheeks read/write access to that share
I swear Samba ends up working but maybe the problem is with Windows 7. I looked at the SAMBAWiki Win 7 page and made sure my registry values were what they should have been (and they were).

Jun 1, 2011Come back to forum after long gap, after using Ubuntu for the last few years i finally move to fedora again with Fedora 15. I like this version of Fedora, it's clean & simple. But i'm having few problems as well. I want to share some folder of my fedora machine with a windows machine of my home, so that my younger brother can access those folders from his windows machine & copy files to his computer. for this i need to setup samba, i already install samba related packages. but can't start system-config-samba from Application Menu. When i go to start this, it asking for authentication & after giving password nothing happend at all! i try to start this from Command line with-

at present, i can browse shared folders from other machine of my home network, but my fedora machine is absent in list of machines, so my brother can't access shared folders of my machine. how can i setup samba share in my fedora machine? so that i can easily share folders with other machine just like ubuntu.

Feb 15, 2011I have a couple of user accounts where each member belongs to a group i have created: Each user access the share using their own user account credentials.
How can I configure Samba in a way so that each modification done on the share gets the owner of the user and my group instead of the user and the users own group? I would also like the access rights to be 770 to each modification.
In other words, today each modification by "userA" get the owner "userA.userA" and I would like it to be "userA.MyGroup" with "rwxrwx---" permissions.

May 31, 2011I am trying to mount a shared folder from windows xp to my ubuntu vm. It is running in vm player.
I installed samba with sudo apt-get smbclient smbfs
Next, I run smbclient -L computer_name_here and get the error NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE. What am I doing wrong? How can I solve this?

May 19, 2011I've setup a samba share with RecycleBin option. However, there is no cleanup and soon will saturate free space.
I'm trying to plan a command that each week clean the content of those dir or the directory itself.
The dir tree is like /home/ :user1
Dir1
Dir2
RecycleBin

To be careful to all possible situations I'm testing this line in directory with spaces in names. I know is ugly and ... and ... but users are just used to and they don't care about me And, having this line working for spaces I can use it for other situations other than shares.

PDC SAMBA + OPEN LDAP (ubuntu 9.04)
Linux (File Servers) + Windows machines all working well
I'm trying to set up a share drive on my new server using ubuntu 9.10 with samba (v 3.4) and ldapclient and the shares are not working when I defined Valid Users for share folders, that keep me ask me about my user and password, on the logs I have:

I have the same set up on my File Server (Ubuntu 9.04) which use samba 3.3 is working fine.Someone know if has some different setting between samba 3.3 (ubuntu 9.04) and samba 3.4 (ubuntu 9.10) that could cause this problem ?

Feb 24, 2009I'm trying to setup a Samba network share with a Fedora Directory Server backend. This will be used primarily for Windows users to authenticate before accessing the share. I am using Fedora Core 10 and have all of the latest updates installed. When I try to connect from a Windows machine, I am prompted for a username and password. I enter the username and password of the account I created in Fedora Directory Server in OU=People. The credentials are rejected. At the same time in the log file I see this:

Administrator is the user I created in Fedora Directory Server. If I perform an ldapsearch it will find the user as uid: Administrator so I know it is able to be looked up in FDS. But I'm guessing that's not the problem.

Mar 18, 2011I am attempting to share a folder from an existing drive that has been formatted in NTFS. I simply right click on the folder, goto share, and I can see the option to share to UNIX and that works with no problems. My question is; why is the SAMBA sharing dialog grayed out?

Jan 22, 2011I have installed ubuntu 10.10 and the Samba addon to configure my shares to my Windows terminals.This is what I got
Firewall off (utf disabled)
Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)
External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)
I have two shares
1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.
2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.

I followed it to the letter, editing the smb.conf file, creating a /srv/samba/share directory, changing the permissions, and restarting the daemons. I was able to read and write to the share with my Ubuntu laptop. Success! However, my Windows laptop can see the Samba server, but when I click on the share, "Ubuntu server (Samba, Ubuntu)" to reveal the file system, it asks for a username and password.

Jan 15, 2011I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 server on and old pc to use it as a backup server for my and my kids pc's.The pc I use for the Ubuntu server has two sata disks on a fasttrak 378 controller, fakeraid as I have learned, and a single pata disk. I have installed ubuntu on the single pata disk and was planing to use the fakeraid as the samba share.

Ubuntu :: Can't Remove Samba Share / Stop This?
Jan 26, 2010I just set up a quick share to allow another computer to get some files. I then noticed I was already sharing another folder elsewhere that I had forgotten to stop sharing so I stopped it from sharing.
When I got the files I wanted on my other computer I went to stop the share I had just set up but it appeared to be unshared even though I can see and access it on the network.
Any ideas how to stop this share?

On windows, I try to connect using a different user and when I select finish, it prompts me again and adds my workgroup before my user name.

Mar 22, 2010i have an old desktop that i have decided to use as a central point for localhost/website files. I have 2 laptops, a ubuntu and vista, and i want them both to be able to see the public_html folder on my desktop, and be able to create/update folders and files.
I have set up the samba sharing and that's working fine, but when i create folders using my laptop, they are not writeable to the desktop or other laptop because my laptop is the creator. Is there a way that I can set it so that whenever folders/files are created from either laptop, they have full permissions?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get Permissions In Samba Share?
Jun 6, 2010When I create a new folder on my ubuntu machine and share it with my windows 7 machine using 'net usershare add <dir> <path>', I can't get write perms in Win 7. It keeps giving me a "You need permission to perform this action'. I've chmod the folder to 777 but still no luck.
The funny thing is, it was all working fine until I tried to add a new usershare yesterday (Can't think what I've changed). I use this sharing method to share all of my development /var/www/ folders so I can work on them from my win machine.
I have had a few problems with my samba smb.conf, and it nuked and rebuilt yesterday. I'm fairly new to the Linux game, and this permissions problem has me baffled.

Jun 20, 2010My first post, and I'm an Ubuntu n00b. But I've done a lot of reading and still can't seem to get anywhere with this. First of all. I know that I've set Samba up correctly because I can create a share in /home/documents which is mounted on my primary hard drive /dev/sda1, Windows 7 can access it no problem. But, when I try to set up a Samba share on my second hard drive /dev/sdb1, Windows 7 cannot access it. I've mounted the share in /media/Share The error I get in Window 7 is: " Windows cannot access \HOMESERVERData Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network."
My first thought is I must have the hard drive mounted or formatted incorrectly, but I can't find anything on this forum to tell me otherwise. I feel like I need to restart the process of this Samba set up. Can someone please guide me through: reformatting sdb1, mounting sdb1, setting up my smb.conf, fstab, and any other config files required to use my second hard drive as a Samba share?

When I open the symlink with konqueror it opens the right one (the root directory of the server), but when i open this link with the shell (cd rootfs/), then it opens my local root directory (of my host)...
