Ubuntu :: Setting Up 64bit - Received A Black Drop-down Page Listing - With No Exit Option

Mar 1, 2010

I am interested in trying 64bit Ubuntu Cloud ... downloaded the file ...copied to disk ... ran the installation disk (many more setup questions that were a bit more complicated than 32bit) but successfully completed ... required to remove disk and restart ..after restart I received a black drop-down page listing (with no exit option) requiring that I enter my user name and password ... all good so far but then I was asked to enter my root administrator account number which apparently requires a sudo command. nothing I have tried in sudo commands works and my computer was blocked thereafter so I had to reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 32bit in order to just make this request...

Programming :: JTexrField Needs To Respond To Drop - Starting Up Another Void() With The Received ID

Mar 14, 2010

So, DnD is cool - and in Java, it works. Just set the component where the drag starts to allow that:

Quote: tblMain.setDragEnabled(true);

and - yes - the rest pretty much runs itself. I have a JTextField that happily takes the drop from the JTable (be it the whole row - I'm not there yet, still working on that)...but does not raise any events. I'd like the JTextField to raise an event:

- cleaning up the received data, now it gets the raw stuff, and I need an ID from that string
- starting up another void() with the received ID

I read the tutorials but - for blisters - cannot see the "light", please shed some (light, that is)

Ubuntu :: Remove Black Arrow Drop Down Menu?

I don't like the black arrow on the Main Menu so I followed the instructions to get rid of it posted hereI got to the part where I type "sudo make" However, I get the exact error posted hereI tried to follow the solution, I installed libpanel-applet2-dev using synaptic. I tried to edit the "Makefile" in the directory /var/cache/apt-build/build/gnome-panel-2.30.2. Fedora :: Xsane Page Size Setting - Cannot Find A Page Size Anywhere In Any Of The Buttons

Jun 5, 2010

I have a Canoscan LiDE 30 scanner which works fine in Linux. I haven't used it in months, and never since moving from Jaunty x86_64 to Fedora 11 x86_64. This evening I suddenly need to scan two pages to send to someone via e-mail, and the recipient is desperate to receive them. Naturally, Xsane has decided this is the moment to screw me.

The problem: I cannot figure out how to tell Xsane that the page size is 8.5 11. It insists on scanning only the left side, 3.99 x 11. I cannot find a page size anywhere in any of the buttons.

In Preview I once got it to scan the entire page, but could not figure out how to save the image to file. Subsequently I have not been able to figure out how I did it. In any event, scanning from the small main window always scans 3.99 x 11. Adjusting the scan area manually in the Preview window allows me to change the size area in the small main window to 8.5 x 11, but when I then scan from the small main window it reverts to 3.99 x 11.

I have scanned the document a hundred times at least, each time trying different buttons, but nothing has succeeded in getting the full page.

OpenSUSE :: Black Desktop After Exit Of Game?

Oct 28, 2010

I installed 11.3 32 bit KDE on my system I had been running 11.0 32 for over a year.nVidia card, AMD quad, 4 gig RAM.Blender runs fine, fast and clean, when I exit, it takes a couple of seconds before I get control back.If I play a game, ArmagetronIOQuake, FrozenBubble - when I exit I get my mouse pointer back in a few seconds, you see a couple of the windows open on the desktop for a brief second but all goes black. When you move the mouse pointer around the screen it changes as if it is going over an icon or window but it does not recover.

I have a dual boot machine; sometimes I want to use windows for something Linux won't do.

It boots up Linux by default, so if I want Windows, I need to interrupt it at the beginning.

It would be more convenient if I could tell it, when I shut down, what to reboot into.

Networking :: IPTables - Setting Output To Drop And Add Traffic

Feb 21, 2011

I need to set OUTPUT to DROP, and add the outgoing traffic one by one, but I couldn't do it. My current config is as follows:

Code:
*filter
:INPUT DROP [0:0]
:FORWARD DROP [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
:RH-Firewall-1-INPUT - [0:0]
-A INPUT -j RH-Firewall-1-INPUT
-A FORWARD -j RH-Firewall-1-INPUT
:RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT - [0:0]
-A INPUT -j RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT
#previously ESTABLISHED,RELATED comm is ok
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
#80 is ok from all
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

If I change OUTPUT to DROP in :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0], I don't get any response from a server running in that box. I am using RHEL 5.5. Now, asking Red Hat is not an option: I have the license but I don't have support license.

Ubuntu Security :: IPTables - Setting Default Rules To All Chains As DROP

Jun 30, 2010

I've read the instruction about setting up the iptables rules to filter all port except HTTP, SSH, FTP. I require first remove all default iptables rules and set default rules to all chains as DROP:
# Set default-deny policies for all three default chains
$IPTABLES -P INPUT DROP
$IPTABLES -P FORWARD DROP
$IPTABLES -P OUTPUT DROP

Then allow only some ports:
#Accept inbound packets that are part of previously-OK'ed sessions
$IPTABLES -A INPUT -j ACCEPT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED
# Accept inbound packets which initiate SSH sessions
$IPTABLES -A INPUT -p tcp -j ACCEPT --dport 22 -m state --state NEW
# Accept inbound packets which initiate FTP sessions
$IPTABLES -A INPUT -p tcp -j ACCEPT --dport 21 -m state --state NEW
# Accept inbound packets which initiate HTTP sessions
$IPTABLES -A INPUT -p tcp -j ACCEPT --dport 80 -m state --state NEW
# Log anything not accepted above $IPTABLES -A INPUT -j LOG --log-prefix "Dropped by default:"

But I hired a VPS from other country so the only mean I can manage it is via SSH. If I setup the default rule to DROP first, I afraid that I can no longer connect via SSH to tell iptables allow SSH
So my question is:
- Does the IP tables take effect immediately after I input a rule?
- Is there any mean to run this as a batch job (create a script and run all these rules one time).
- My VPS has a web control panel which have a terminal via web. Is this a native terminal or just a connection via port 80 or 22?

General :: Getting An All BLACK Page From CUPS?

I was having no problem with the printer and it was working fine under Slackware 13.0 running CUPS 1.3.11 with the standard CUPS driver for Epson printers.I recently upgraded to Slackware 13.1 which comes with CUPS 1.4.3, during the set up I had CUPS search for my printer which it found and I loaded the standard driver. When I printed a page it comes out all black. I then down loaded the Avasys Epson-Stylus_NX515-pipslite-en.ppd and pipslite_1.4.0-5 software and installed them both. Ubuntu :: HPLIP Option Not Present When Setting Up Printer?

Apr 20, 2010

I just built a system and put a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 on it. I have two other systems with 9.10 as well. On both of them the printer (an HP Officejet Pro 7680 set up directly on the network) is shown as an HPLIP printer with a URI that starts with hp:/net/ . When trying to set up this printer on the new machine the option for HPLIP is not present and the URI starts with dnssd://. I can only set up as and LPD Network Printer or an Appsocket/JetDirect network printer. Yes I have the hplip stuff installed on the new machine. My main concern is actually using the scanner function with Xsane. The other two machines scan just fine, the new one can't find any devices. I think this must be connected with the lack of HPLIP functions. This is with the AMD64 bit version of 9.10

OpenSUSE Install :: Normal User Cannot Login - Screen Blinks - A Black Page Appears

Jun 27, 2010

I can't log into my normal user account anymore, though I can log in with root without any problem. When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.

Programming :: Setting ACL As Mount Option Using Awk And Sed Script

Apr 24, 2010

I am creating a script for making a public folder in linux. The idea behind is to allow any user to write files in this folder and further each of those files can be used by any user. For this purpose I am using acl. This first requires to set acl as mount option in /etc/fstab which I need to do with help of (awk and sed) command available in linux.

The line below is the fstab entry which I need to make change in.
UUID=e9a3db4b-d8c0-40b4-a661-131e13afea1e
/ext3 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1

I want my script to identify this line (most probably with / which denotes the mountpoint) and then add (acl,) without brackets in options. Currently I use the command as below
sed 's/realtime/acl,relatime/' /etc/fstab
but the above command is in reference with (realtime) what I am planning is that my script should be able to find the line which has / and then go to options and add acl there.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Going Loopy - Nvidia Driver And DVI - Login Screen Went Black

Dec 24, 2009

I had a fully working Nvidia driver setup in FC 12 with no problems using an old LG monitor (LCD panel) on a VGA connection. I have just replaced the monitor with a newer Dell model that has a DVI connection. I plugged it in and got nice Post Screen, FC 12 boot progress display but when it got to displaying the login screen it went black.

Ctrl +Alt+F2 took me to a command prompt where I can type commands no problem. If I change the driver to the Nouveau (and Chattr +a the xorg.conf file) I get a lovely gui. So far nothing I have tried has let me use the Nvidia driver. I have searched around Google and tried nvidia-xconfig, system-config-display, livna-config-display xrandr (which fails to work at all) but so far I have got no where.

Fedora X86/64bit :: FC14 Wont Get Past Initial Black Screens?

Jan 20, 2011

I have a PC installed with FC 14:AMD 9500 Quad Core4GB RAM2x ATI X1950I've been using FC14 for a few weeks after updating from FC13.The graphics driver was a default one, it worked but it would only recognise one of my screen cards and I wanted to install the ATI Catalyst software so I began the process of installing the proper drivers.I followed the howto at: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=155503 Once I'd finished the driver seemed to be sort of working but everything was going really slow. If I moved a window it'd take a while to redraw in the new position, menus took ages to pop up, and so on.

I tried running aticonfig and got an error message (unfortunately the only record of it is on the machine I can't access properly). I put the message into a search engine and found a bug stating the same message where people had the same problem with Nvidia and intel cards too.The problem was something to do with python and how it started up the drivers (sorry I can't remember the message). The bug had an rpm attached that was a patch to fix this problem (I'm blabbing on in case any of this jogs the memory of someone that had this problem or worked on it).I installed the patch and rebooted and now Fedora gets as far as the black screen where a progress bar fills in white at the bottom of the screen but it stops there. Once the bar is completely white it sits there and gets on further no matter how long I wait.Does anyone know how I can recover this system? Is there a way of getting the system to recreate xorg.conf before this stage and load using the default driver again? The point it's hanging at is the point where it would normally bring up the graphical progress bar then the login screen.

I can't find any info on installing Suse on this notebook, (I think its only be available for a couple of weeks now). What do I do to get the screen to show me the graphical installer, Or how do I make the KDE Live version run from the 64bit DVD. I also tried the 32bit version DVD, but it wouldn't give graphics either, so it seems like an X issue.

Ubuntu Installation :: "Delay Prior To Thermal" - No Option To Disable This BIOS Setting ?

Oct 14, 2010

H/W : Intel 1.6GHz, BioStar U8548

S/W : Ubuntu 8.04 + RTAI + EMC2 (CNC controller)

In configuring CNC controller system, latency-test must be run to find maximum jitter of the system. It counts about 17,000 ns for few minutes, then it suddenly rise to 260,000 ns. It is impossible to control CNC with such large jitter.

In tracing this problem, I found that Award BIOS setting "Delay Prior to Thermal" is firmly engaged in making a problem. When I set this setting to 4 minutes, it makes large jitter periodically with exact 4min 15sec period. When I changed this setting to 8 minutes, its jitter is 8min 15sec period.

But, there is no option to disable this BIOS setting.

I heard that ACPI enabled OS can take over the ACPI function of the BIOS (which may include this "thermal" setting), but RTAI tuned kernel don't include ACPI modules.

Is there any solution to this problem ? If I recompile kernel with RTAI with ACPI processor module enabled, would it be a another problem maker ?
