I can't seem to figure out how to even share files between my laptop and desktop. They are both Ubuntu 9.10. I thought maybe samba was the way but couldn't figure it out. I was looking at the ssh that comes with Ubuntu and been trying to get it to work but don't know what I'm doing wrong. I type: ssh username@computername and it give me a little info. Don't know what I'm suppose to do then. I looked at the network folder on my laptop and it seem to see it but everytime I click on it ask for a password and I can't get in since I don't know the right password. I'm not sure if this is the best software to use or not. Just wanted something to look at and transfer from my desktop to my laptop and vice versa.

I have two Ubuntu 10.10 computers and two Windows XP computers connected to my network. I cannot share files between the Ubuntu computers using samba. I keep getting the "Unable to Mount Location Failed to mount Windows share" error. I've tried the solutions posted by dmizer here and nothing works.Random true facts:I can successfully connect to folders shared on my Windows XP computers from either windows computer.I can successfully connect to folders shared on my Windows XP computers from either ubuntu computers.Neither of my windows computers cannot connect to folders shared on either ubuntu computer.Neither ubuntu computer can connect to folders shared by the other ubuntu computer.I REALLY need to get samba to work since I have other Windows computers on my network.

I now have 3 desktop computers hard wired into my wireless router and another desktop plus 2 laptops connecting wireless. All are running Ubuntu 10.4 or 10.10. I have not had the chance to get them all upgraded yet. What is the easiest way to get these computers connected so that they can share files? Do I have to set up a server or is there a simpler way? I just want to be able to copy a file from one computer to another.

I would like to share gnote notes between two computers. The documentation talks about synchronizing with a server, but there are no synchronization menu options as the manual suggests. Is is possible to either synchronize notes between two computers or at least export notes from one computer and copy to another? This seems incredibly simple and basic but surprisingly I can't find a way to do it.

I have Ubuntu on one machine and open SUSE on the other. Both connected with an ethernet cable to the same router. Both connect to the internet ok. I did manage to set up 2 machines both running Ubuntu with file sharing but now I have switched one to SUSE I seem to be getting into a mess. Ubuntu sees the SUSE machine but does not open any folders. SUS does NOT see the Ubutu machine. I have looked for a beginners guide to setting up file shaing with SUSE without success. (I like SUSE better because I can use my Audiophile sound card "out of the box")

Networking Problem Fedora 14 2.6.35.12-90.fc14.i686. I am trying to share files between 2 Fedora 14 computers , a desktop and a laptop, both located on my local DSL server. The laptop sees its public files and the public files folder on the desktop computer - looks fine. The desktop computer acts differently. Both systems show an entry of "unknown type" in the directory listing, for the public files directory. But whereas a right click on the directory entry on the laptop offers "open" the same operation on the desktop computer offers "open gedit". When I double click the entries on the laptop, entries appear on the main screen. If I double click the entries on the main screen, the directory contents are displayed. But, if I doubleclick the directory entries on the desktop computer 1- I get a black box that says there has been a crash in gvfs-1.6.6-1.fc14 and an error message box tells me Dbus error org.freedesktop.DBus.ERROR.NoReply: Message did not received a reply.

2.0.0 Banshee
2.6.38-8-generic

I have a large (114GB) music collection, collected over the years and stored on NAS. Various sources and formats from my MS days and .ogg and .flac recently. Having just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 using Rythmbox and having some spare time on my hands I thought I'd get some of my collection in order. The music is organised into various categories in a directory on the NAS: /music/category/artist/album_name/ where category divides things up into styles like Classical, Reggae, Soundtracks, French, and a ubiquitous "General" category
There are 5 or 6 computers attached to the network, all running linux/banshee and reasonably in step with each other. 2 of them have the full set of categories on, one is my main PC, the other is connected to the Hi Fi, the others have various usages and a subset of categories on. There could be an update to the metadata (scoring and/or track and artist info) from any one of the PCs, but probably only from 3 of the machines. I have seen some options in edit>preferences which seem to write metadata and scores to files but cannot find anything in the user guide on how to exploit these. Is there a way to sync (and merge) the metadata from each of the machines so I'm not rewriting it on every machine, depending on the size of the files can this be done using the preferences by writing back to the NAS or using something such as dropbox to keep them synced.

As the Subject mentions I have an Office Jet 5610 All in One Printer that I am trying to share between 3 Computers.
Computer Number 1: Laptop running Fedora 12 with the Gnome desktop. This is the computer to which the printer is physically connected to. I have no issues printing from this printer at the laptop. I have installed both samba and cups. I can access cups online and manage the printer from the Laptop with no issues I have checked to make sure sharing was turned on and in the laptop i have made sure that internet sharing with the printer is turned on.
Computer Number 2: Desktop running Sabayon 5.1 with the Gnome desktop. I can see the printer and it tells me that its ready. I try to print a simple test page and i get error: Destination Printer not accepting Jobs. I'm not sure if this is a Sabayon issue a Cups issue or a Fedora Issue.
Computer Number 3 Desktop running that Redmond Crap (Wifes Computer) Yeah Redmond wont even find the network printer much less print to it.
I forgot to mention that i have checked my firewall to make sure IPP was allowed and Samba was allowed so i do know that these are not the issues. I do have SELInux installed and running though don't know if this could be the culprit or not.

Trying to share my internet connection with other computers on my LAN. I've tried doing this with Debian, Ubuntu & Fedora so far...
My Intended Setup is as follows;
The Problem: So far I've not been able to get an internet connection from any computer connected to the HUB. I currenty have Fedora 13 on PC1 but have also tried with both Ubuntu 10.04 & Debian Lenny. I am open to using any Linux based distro on PC1 as long it has a Gnome Desktop. eth0 on PC1 can be Static or Dhcp, but I would prefer to set Static IPs on eth1 & all of the Client PCs
To the best of my knowledge I have enabled ipv4 forwarding in sysctl.conf (& some other changes);
Code:
All changes I made to the Firewall (all other Firewall settings are still at default, no custom rules added yet);
Router is set up to assign dhcp from 192.168.xxx.100 & 192.168.xxx.200
At the moment I have only 1 PC attached to the HUB. It's Ubuntu 10.04 (PC2)
It's details are;
ip 192.168.xxx.103
netmask255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.xxx.101
Thus Far I can't ping 192.168.XXX.103 from PC1 & I can't ping 192.168.XXX.101 from PC2. (unreachable) I have an internet connection on PC1 (of course)

After upgrading my ubuntu server from 9.04 to 10.04, the window computers couldn't resolve samba shared names anymore, the error code displayed by Windows was 0x80070035.
I was using the ubuntu server as a samba server, using 'share' as the security authentication method, it has been working very well under previous ubuntu versions but, after upgrading to 10.04, the windows computers can't access the server shares anymore; the linux computers don't have any problems (I can access the shares from linux).
As a workaround, I've added the name of the server in c:windowssystem32driversetchosts; but I'd like to know how to fix the problem without modifying every windows computer.

I just recently constructed a computer to create a nice Fedora Linux server to replace a Mac Mini server that I have been using for a few years. I'm attempting to create a Samba share for my machines, a Windoze 7 machine as well as a couple MacOS 10.6 machines. I've set up Samba, started the service, allowed Samba in the firewall, and used system-config-samba to set up a share with a user. I created a User called "space", and a share /media/peliculas/Movies (a mounted hard drive). When I type in \IP_ADDRESS in the address bar in windows 7, I get the option to log in. I log in correctly and I see two directories "space" and "Movies." Unfortunately when I click on one of them I get the following error message:
Windows cannot access \IP_ADDRESSMovies Check the spelling of the name. Otherwize, there might be a problem with your network. To try and identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. I also get something similar when I attempt to connect with my mac machine. Using "Connect to Server" I type in: smb:\IP_ADDRESS, and login, I have the option to mount "Movies" or "space." If I select any of these, I get the following error message: There was an error connecting to the server "IP_ADDRESS." Check the server name or IP addres, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.
Also, if I type 'smbclient -U space -L IP_ADDRESS' I can see the "Movies" in the "Sharename." At this point I'm not sure what else to do, and have been trying to figure this out for the last few days (losing sleep due to being baffled). The only thing that I can think of is that I have something wrong with the smb.conf file. Here is what it currently displays:
Global Settings
workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = Samba Server Version %v
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50
[code].....
One last thing, when I check the log files, there are error messages that state: smbd/service.c:1009(make_connection_snum) '/home/space' does not exist or permission denied when connecting to [peliculas] Error was Permission denied --Windoze 7 and MacOS 10.6 log files

I have a LAN of about 70 computers that I would like to share media files between. I have gotten to the point with Samba that I can view the files without a username/password from client PC's. I would like to make all the folders read only except for one which will be writable for everyone. The thing that I am having a hard time with is allowing a couple of administrators (on Windows 7 machines) read/write access for all files/folders. I am completely new to Ubuntu and Samba so please make explanations thorough. Here is /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

1. I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.

equivalent of "force_user" when sharing with nautilus-share? To put this question into context, I have shared out a folder with "Allow others to create ..." and "Guest Access ..." turned on via the GUI (I believe nautilus-share is applicaition behind the GUI). When Guest accounts create files or folders, I want the owner of the files or folders to be a specific user, rather then "nobody". In a Samba Server, I know you can use the parameter "force_user" in the smb.conf (under an individual sharename) which will specify the owner of the files and subfolders created through the share.
I have tried to add this parameter to the files created in /var/lib/samba/usershares but the owner of the files and folders are still "nobody" (NOTE: I rebooted the PC after making the change to the file) I have just done a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop with nothing else installed (except the current Updates and the necessary components needed when sharing folders) As a follow on question, I also want to set the permissions for files and folders. To replicate what the "create_mask", "force_create_mode", "directory_mask" and "force_directory_mode" parameters do within a Samba Server.

this has happened in different distros, so far i have tried slack, arch, and mint at work i have an xp box with a shared folder i created. on my linux box i setup fstab as follows
Code:
//winxp/temp$ /home/user/temp cifs rw,uid=1000,gid=1000,credentials=/home/user/.creds 0 0
this gets mounted correctly and i can read/write the shared folder at home i have a win7 box that i create a share on and use the exact same code in fstab, but it wont mount the share. i get something like permission denied or access denied is there a difference in how winxp and win7 share folders? my usernames on the linux boxes match those of my windows boxes at each location. i have given my win accounts full access and control over the win shares.
