Ubuntu :: Says Root In Corner Instead Of Username?
Jan 5, 2011
Okay, so, when I try to log in, it says it cant log me out because "Power Manager" is running, so i click log out anyway, then, once it's logged in it says "root" in the top right corner instead of my name. And, it's logged into the root account, and it's irritating me because to get to my documents and stuff, i have to navigate to /home/[my name]/documents instead of just clicking documents in the corner. Does anybody know how to solve this?

any chance, in Fedora 15, to remove the username and the related menu from the top right corner of gnome shell? I don't use IM of any sort, i'm not always connected and I don't like a menu remembering me my name and my availability status...

I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

how I managed this, but somehow during a reinstall I changed the ownership of all my home stuff to root, instead of my normal username. So now nothing loads, unless I sudo it. I had to use sudo just to open firefox.

Ubuntu community: I have desktop running 10.04 with a 160 GB HDD (150 ext4, 6.5gd swap) that is slowly becoming a file/print server. I decided to add a 500 gb hard drive and thought I should seek some advice before formatting and partitioning it. The network its on is shared with windows and Ubuntu machines. I do plan on adding more HDD's down the road as they fill up fast. I just didn't want to paint myself into a corner by not planning this out.

I have been using Netbook Remix 9.10 and it's been great until this morning.
Today when I turned it on, after Grub and the loading screen, the system brought up a smaller white screen in the corner with my username@machinename"~$ as the first line.
This looks like a terminal window. I can see my folders and use the system but I get no GUI anymore. Not sure why this is happening.
Tried booting into Recovery and updating the system, but to no avail. I've also searched the forums for the last few hours but have not found anything similar.
Anyone have any idea what to do? code...
Not sure if this is relevant to my problem or not. However, I do remember this happening on my desktop version of 9.10... that was solved by installing 9.04.

I wanted to know how can I change the name that appears in the upper right corner on the top bar. I set it up in the first install with my dad's name, but now I'm using the laptop so I want it to display my name. I managed to delete his profile and make a new one with my name, but the top bar still displays his name.
I want to change it from Guy (my dad) to Mike (yours truly)
I'm running Ubuntu 9.04.

For about a month now, my mouse has been jumping to one of the corners of my screen every few minutes (normally the top-left). I also had a problem where the right mouse button would double-click 90% of the time.
I just replaced my mouse a few minutes ago, and now the right button works fine, but the cursor keeps jumping to the corner of the screen.
I'm fairly certain this is not a hardware problem, since switching mice did not fix the problem.
Both were PS2 corded laser mice.

Whenever I move my cursor to the bottom right corner of my screen it sticks there for a moment, but then lets me move it again. No issues as long as I don't go in the corner. The effect seems to affect an area 4cm long and 2cm tall regardless of what is showing on the screen. Changing to proprietary drivers has no effect.
System:
Ubuntu 11.04 - Gnome Shell
ATI HD-5770 GPU

I have a lucid stock install of Ubuntu, and the visual effects are set to Normal.
The Windows-E shortcut brings up the 'expo' display of all four workspaces in a line.
Is there a way of making (say) the top right corner of the screen sensitive so that moving the mouse there triggers the display of all workspaces?
Can this be done with 'stock' installed software?
gconf-editor has a promising looking key called 'expo_edge' at
/apps/compiz/plugins/expo/allscreens/options/expo_edge
but that might do something different.

When I open any application, instead of getting the application logo at the top left corner of the window, what I get is a button which on clicking drops down to provide me couple of options. I am using Ambiance Theme Can I move those options somewhere else on the top and get back the application logo at its place(which kind of looks smart and helps me differentiate between the applications in open windows faster) I haven't checked it in KDE but I am using Gnome(default with Ubuntu 10.04). And as far as I remember, when I was using KDE with Fedora 11(a month ago), I used to get the logo
