Code:
export PS1='u@desktop-@:w '
I tried saving it here:
Code:

and here:
/etc/bash.bashrc The files save just fine, but it does not change my bash promt. What am I doing wrong??

Using normal bash tools (ie, built-ins or commonly-available command-line tools), is it possible, and how to extract/save attachments on emails?
For example, say I have a nightly report which arrives via email but is a zip archive of several log files. I want to save all those zips into a backup directory. How would I accomplish that?

my mediacenter is attached to an beamer with the optimal resolution of 1280*720 ubuntu 10.04 doesnt offer me this revolution (on my intel 915 graphis controller). this means i have to add this resolution to the possible resolutions. first i used cvt
Code:
cvt 1280 720 60
and got this result:
Quote:
# 1280x720 59.86 Hz (CVT 0.92M9) hsync: 44.77 kHz; pclk: 74.50 MHz
Modeline "1280x720_60.00" 74.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 720 723 728 748 -hsync +vsync
then i added this to xrandr
Code:
xrandr --verbose --newmode "1280x720" 74.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 720 723 728 748 -hsync +vsync
and
Code:
xrandr --verbose --addmode VGA1 1280x720
now i can select and use the new resolution - until next reboot. after an reboot 1280x720 is again not available. even if i work with sudo - the resolution isnt there....

I try and try and try to make a live CD.. I get "fails" in the process..? This time I managed to get a file in Home, but it's locked, and I've tried everything I found on the Net to unlock it, to enable creating the CD...It seems I am forced to reinstall Ubuntu to clean this mess out. I can't unlock the file..?All I wants is an install CD of the OS how I likes it, with my background pix, my music, and my choice of peripheral softwares, avoiding doing all those downloads and all that tweaking... Is this possible with Ubuntu?..

I've built my ubuntu setup straight from a minimal install, just installing packages to get exactly the system I want, and I was wondering how I could fashion that into an ISO, config files and all. Could I use an ISO remaster program for that task? Or would a simple shell script be easier?

I have the cd image for the install cd of ubuntu 10.04 release candidate. Before I install it, is there anyway to specify which of the default packages I DO NOT want to install (via command line arguments or some other means). There is ALOT of things I DO NOT want, like firefox, "cloud one", "social features", totem, rythmbox, "music store", empathy. I know that the cd allows you to adjust the command arguments for the install command, and something tells me that there should be an argument for specifying which packages to install/not-install or to choose from a list or something to the same effect.

The "Customized Application Launcher" function is no longer in my "Add to Panel" Window. Nor do I have the ability to "edit" existing launchers anymore. Is this a feature or a bug? I am sincerely hoping it's not a feature, it's a "look for a different window manager" kind of feature if it is. I don't have a launcher for Firefox and can't create one. (I probably can by hand editing some config files somewhere but I have no idea which ones). And I'm not inclined to do so. I had it up until my most recent updates, 30 minutes ago.
(update)It's running Lucid, AMD64. I have three other Lucid boxes and none of them acquired the same issue after updates so I now believe it to be something with this machine. After rummaging around for a few hours I have not found the fix. Can someone please tell me the program(s) that are responsible for this? That would at least point me in a better direction than I have now.And oh yes, I have logged out, rebooted and re-installed a few things with no change.
And..to make it more interesting. When logged in as root I HAVE this functionality, so it's something peculiar to this user profile.I gave up, made myself a new homedir, copied everything but .gnome and its subtree and a few other .subdirs and the functionality is back. I have no idea what fixed it, or broke it for that matter. But this is a valid workaround, worked for me..

We need to harness the power of computing technology but, since I'm no programmer, I am posting here if some people can help with our situation. For many hours per day, we have to go through paragraphs and paragraphs of text. We have our own style guide to follow when it comes to:
capitalization
hyphenation
compound words (spaced out as two completely separate words?; hyphenated?; or joined together without any space?) We understand that Microsoft Word has a bit of customizability with it. But, to make the long story short, it's not good enough. So what we're looking for is to be able to paste several paragraphs into some program, and with rules that are 100%-created by us, have it alert us of the errors. If it could alert us the way that MS-Word or OpenOffice Writer does, that is, by using zizag underlines in red or green, that would be great. If you are a programmer or know a program that is 100% customizable (by 100% customizable, I mean that the only errors the programs considers errors are those that I tell it are errors).

I would like to sort ALL my Evolution email folders in reverse date order (most recent message to appear first). You can create a customized view, but you then have to apply this view to EACH folder individually - not fun if you have hundreds of folders... I don't seem to be able to edit the "default" view called "Messages", the Edit button remains greyed out when you select that view...

I just bought a new laptop which will be running SSD (Corsair 120GB) as the boot drive and would like to migrate my OS to the new system. One of my requirements is full-disk encryption. I work with proprietary client data and need to encrypt the new drive, its swap partition, everything except for /boot. I've read instructions for doing this from the alternate install CD, but my OS is disturbingly customized (started out as 10.04) and it would take months to rebuild everything. I keep remastersys (-dist) ISOs to ensure I don't have to go through that process, but the ubiquity installer does not appear to have the option of doing disk-level crypt during the installation process. I can boot the ISO into CLI, but don't know how to run the alternate installer from there.

I have a very usefull Floppy Disk, when I boot from it, it boots into a Windows 95 menu, the initial screen has various options including an option to press shift + F5, when this is done it shows the command prompt A:. I have added various utilities to the floppy myself ie- fdisk, format, chkdisk, efdisk, xcopy, an early Norton Ghost, etc, etc. So I can partition a new hard disk, format it, delete partitions, ghost a disk, etc, etc, very handy. But floppies are becoming obsolete. I have tried burning the contents of this floppy to a CD, but I can't boot from this CD. I have tried various bootable CD programs from the net, including Ultimate Boot CD, but none of them work very well. I would like to make a bootable CD that will simply boot any computer with either a --new blank, unpartitioned, unformatted Hard Disk -- a hard disk with Windows, -- a hard disk with a Linux Distro, etc. When booting from this CD, it will boot to a command prompt, enabling me to start any program that I have added to the CD myself, ie fdisk, format, etc, etc.

I am migrating to KDE4. When Current goes official I plan to install and give KDE4 a serious run. Because I am running 12.2 I will forego the upgrade path and install fresh in separate partitions. I haven't performed a fresh install since first installing Slackware 10.1. Likely I'll go 64-bit as my system is a dual core AMD with 4GB of RAM. Is there a list somewhere of 32-bit apps that have no 64-bit versions? Through the years I have many system tweaks and customized settings, but I'll be able to migrate and resurrect those readily. Mostly I am concerned with the desktop migration. Any punch list of warnings and "gotchas" are welcomed. Any links focusing on migrating at such a "late" stage in the KDE4 cycle.
I don't want to build the desktop completely from scratch. A fresh install reduces cruft and clutter that might have accumulated through the years, but also means more work configuring the desktop and apps. Fortunately, I long ago housed my user and data file directories on separate partitions and don't have to worry about that. Therefore during the transition I will be dual booting but using the same user accounts. All user accounts currently have $HOME/.kde profile directories that I do not want clobbered by KDE4. Should I rename that directory now and change a handful of KDE environment variables in 12.2 before working with KDE4, such as $KDEHOME and $KDE_CONFIG_DIR? New user account names would be one option, but my primary user account has too many non-KDE settings to migrate.
In that spirit, would somebody post the default Slackware KDE related environment variables so I can compare to those in KDE3? I am browsing the forum and web for various elements I should know or be forewarned, but many of the threads are old and I suspect no longer apply to KDE 4.5.5. I would like to migrate as many KDE 3.5.10 settings as possible, such as KMail, Akregator, Kate, Konsole, KMix, K3B, Kaffeine, Amarok, Digikam, etc. I realize there might be a point of diminishing returns and reconfiguring from scratch might be less problematic. Will both KDE4 and KDE3 be able to use the same KMail files? Or during the transition should I restrict my mail checks to KDE3?
If possible I would like to disable Nepomuk and Strigi before starting my first session in KDE4. I don't want to disable them after starting the first session as then profile files are automatically created. Hopefully nothing more than editing some default configuration files (/usr/share/autostart? Don't install those packages?). I have no need for or interest in Nepomuk (social-semantic desktop). I don't think I have any use for Strigi, which if I understand correctly, focuses on indexing meta data rather than just finding files. As far as I can tell because of PIM apps, disabling Akonadi is futile, so I won't try.

I'm currently trying to make my version of the LMDE 2 (based on Debian), but unfortunately, a lot of HOW-TO on this topic, is based on the remastersys, and the main site (and repository) is not available any more. The only one I could find is ubuntu build and they won't work on LMDE because it's Debian based. I also have tried tools like "systemback" - made a 4GB iso image file, and had few options to customize, and "bootcd" package, who had even less options (received a 2GB iso).
So, what I want:
Base system: LMDE 2 + official updates + some new software (like pinta, openshot, deluge etc.) + some removed software + fresh kernel -> compress it all and make an iso image file with option to load in LiveCD/USB mode and also install on HDD. I have made all the chain except "last iso part".

Can one make a self booting installation ISO on a flash drive of Fedora 14 as it is, with all my files being in the new install, so I can install this modified operating system on my relatives computers just like I have it on mine, or for if ever the operating system on mine fails, so I can use this flash drive ISO to reinstall the operating system on mine just like I like it, just like it is now? If this can be done, please tell me how you do it, or kindly provide me with a link to a page that has this information.
