Ubuntu :: Root Partition 0 Bytes Remaining After Enlarging

I recently cleared out some old partitions, and "/" was getting full so I made it bigger. It went from about 2Gb to 7Gb.
Now when I boot into my OS I get a dialogue saying:

The volume "Filesystem root" has only 0 bytes disk space remaining
You can free up disk space by removing unused programs or files, or by moving files to another disk or partition I don't see how this is possible. If anything it should have more free space than it had before. how I might go about diagnosing this issue?

I need to enlarge the root file system on a Slackware 13.0 32-bit system; it's in a simple logical partition (/dev/sda6) -- no LVM, mirroring etc. This might be a good opportunity to change from ext4 to jfs, too.Routine procedure, no? No!First off I booted Knoppix 5.31 but found it doesn't have ext4 support (no efs2ck and running fsck results in "fsck.ext4: not found").So I booted Slackware 13.0 32-bit CD-1 only to get the same as with Knoppix.I do have a GParted-liveCD 0.3.4-11 but have had mixed experiences with it so am reluctant, despite having backups.

When I set up my current Debian desktop system ( currently squeeze ) in 2007 I allocated only 8.4G to my / partition. Now I find it is getting too crowded with only about 580M free space (worked around CD & DVD burning by creating a /tmp folder in my /home/username folder). My current plan for fixing this is to use gparted running from a live-cd. I will first delete my swap partition and my /home partition then use gparted to enlarge my / partition to 20G. Next I will recreate & format my swap and /home partitions and restore the contents of my /home partition from backup. I will still have lots of room to spare in my /home partition. My system has no extended partitions. My hd is 250G total. I know this will change the UUIDs of the two new partitions but am not sure if it will change the UUID of the expanded / partition. I expect it will. My next step will be to edit my /etc/fstab and put in the new UUIDs which I will get by running blkid /dev/sdb. My backup drive is an ide drive, /dev/sda. My question is am I likely to run into boot problems with grub2? Should I chroot into my / partition and run update-grub before I reboot or wait to see if it will
reboot first?

This morning, my hard drive looked something like this - Windows Vista on a partition of around 100 GB (NTFS), Ubuntu 10.04 (ext3)on a partition of around 80 GB, 4 GB swap and a partition of around 40 GB (NTFS) containing videos and music and stuff like that. I wanted to resize the Ubuntu partition to around 30 - 40 GB and add the remaining space to the 40 GB partition.
I successfully reduced the Ubuntu partition using the Partition Manager app that comes with Ubuntu, but I was unable to add that to the NTFS partition. After a merge failed, I was no longer able to access the 40 GB partition. I tried restoring that with testdisk, and now I can't access anything! GRUB fails to load, and when running from the live CD of 9.04 (only version I had on CD) my Ubuntu partition and 40 GB data partition no longer shows up. I have over a 100 GB of free space instead.
I'll be extremely grateful For the record, I had an external drive plugged in while running testdisk.

I'm getting an error message that something along the lines of "volume "filesystem root" has only 25mb space remaining". How do I increase the volume size so I never have to worry about it again? This is the 3rd time I've tried ubuntu and it's sticking more and more but this has me thoroughly perplexed. I've got a 320GB HDD partitioned 3 times with a Linux partition being 7GB.
Dual booting Win7Pro.
Running ubuntu 10.10 64-bit

How do fix my Swap Partition? Last night I added unused space to the main Ubuntu partition. Now I noticed the Swap Partition is always at 0 bytes. I'm using a Sony Laptop, and have enclosed two screenshots. One of the Disk Utility and a system monitor.

I recently had to move to a new machine, everything went well except for one thing. I did fresh installation of LAMP server all with default configs. Every time I'm using PHP script to that invokes include, require or require_once I get the following error:

My memory_limit in php.ini is set to 20M. I tried to increase that however it didn't quite work. PHP seems to allocate all possible space and return that message every time i try. If somebody has an idea of how to fix it I would be more than grateful. I spend quite a long time searching for an answer however the all things i found suggested increating memory_limit which in this case doesn't work.

This question is only partially linux-related, but I accidently typed cp file /dev/sda2 instead of cp file /mnt/sda2. The first 300 bytes or so of the ntfs partition were overwritten and now it can't mount and can't boot. I figured I would try copying the first 4096 bytes from another ntfs partition and see if that gave it enough to at least boot. It didn't and I'm wondering if there's any way to fix this sort of thing easily (without downloading an entire Windows 7 DVD) and what exactly I overwrote that was so important.

I have a very very insane problem with my ssd sata harddisk. I did fill the harddisk, and Thunderbird complained about "no space left on device". But even if I delete some files from the harddisk, df will still say 0 blocks free. But it will decrease the number of used blocks. So it looks like it is freeing the blocks and deleting the files, but it don't put the blocks back to the free pool.
But here is where things get insane: If I log in with my normal user, I get a "No free space" when I try to write to the harddisk. But If i log in as root I can write to the file system, despite the fact that df is saying 0 blocks free. I did try to run fsck -f but it just run its test and then say that anything is fine. But it run for less then 10 seconds, is this expected on a 40GB ssd partition?.

How do you calculate the number of usable bytes on a disk partition? When I do an fdisk -l I get this:

I initially installed SuSe11.2 with /tmp mounted on separate partition on another physical disk( there are two physical disks). Now I want to attach disk with existing SuSe11.2 to another motherboard so I would like that /tmp becomes part of the root partition. Will deleting /tmp mount point in /etc/fstab create automatically new /tmp from root at next startup, or something else has to be done to achieve, that in future, /tmp resides on root partition instead? In this way it would be much easier to move the disk with SuSe11.2 to another motherboard.

I am relatively new to Linux and Opensuse. I created the / root partition and now it is growing and maxing out. I have partitioner available to me but how do I change the partition size when the root partition is mounted. Do I login as root and then umount or modify fstab and restart and change from command line or do I format and reinstall everything? I have room to expand but not sure how to manage this?

My Lpatop has a 300G hard drive. It came, as many do pre-installed with a Window OS, in this case Vista 32-bit Home Prem. I had partitioned the hard drive to give a C drive of 97.7GB (Partition 2 /dev/sda 2/Host), a partition for applications and programs, D of 48.8GB (Partition 3 /dev/sda3) and a third partition, E for Documents, etc. of 148GB (Partition 5 /dev/sda 5 media/doc), which on scanning seems to be a sub set of a partition Partition 4 W95 Ext d LBA dev/sda 4.......There is another partition, Partition 1 /dev/sda1 and is called WinRE and is of 2.80GB.All are NTFS except for the Partition 4Windows works fine and I have no problems, but when I use Ubuntu I get errors on startup. In the first instance it will not install the latest Kernal and it gives a Battery Management error in GNOME. I get Storage warning messages all the time, which I believe is the cause of the problems. See enclosed.
I am assuming that the disk space issue is in Host and or Home. Other than all the operational data and applications I do NOT use the Ubuntu filing system, rather the Partition 5 which I created solely for this purpose, so it's not a case of deleting files, it is purely how Ubuntu created itself on install and its operational requirements.The problem is resulting in no space or ability to do updates and new installs, and Kernal and Gnome issues.

I have an Asus EEE PC900. Just installed 10.04 netbook remix and everything works fine straight out of the box. it works great and is a vast improvement on windows xp which was previously installed on the asus. Just one small thing - the battery meter is never accurate as far as time remaining goes - it currently says i have 19 hours 55 minutes to go - unfortunately this is not quite true i suspect. It was the same with 9.10, Does anyone have a solution for this?

I installed Linux Mint 9 LTS onto the family computer last weekend, everything went okay apart from today when suddenly it displays a low disk space message.
The machine has a 250Gb HDD, and has the base install of Mint, plus Dropbox and Google Chrome. (Dropbox has about 500Mb in it). That's it.
The disk usage analyzer tells me that /home is 100% full, yet when I look into each dropdown there is barely enough to make 2Gb of usage. (The most being Dropbox).

two days ago I updated my desktop which has only Ubuntu as OS. Following the update, I chose to upgrade to 11.04 because it was offered on the software update window. The upgrade failed at nearly 4 minutes remaining in the download. Problem now is I cannot boot the system. It keeps taking me to Ubuntu flash screen with 5 options. The Ubuntu with Linux generic (whatever) indicates "Cannot open root device "sda1".

When I try to boot I get this error message:
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the systemwait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/c946b41f-2f8f-4a28-8478-11a50d6fc0e8 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
Booting from my 9.10beta livecd sudo fdisk -lu shows my root partition (sda5) but blkid doesn't, and there's no way to mount it.
I know similar questions have been posted before but they all involve using fsck or e2fsck, which don't work with my ext4 filesystem.

I few months ago I was forced to do a fresh clean install of Karmic becasue my root partition (then 80 GB) was full. I shooulkd have used a LiveCD to resize partitions then but I didn't so when I installed Karmic this time I ended up with a 160GB partition for /.Color me surprised when last night I got a message that / was at less than 5% free space.
1. I routinely do a apt clean so the cache is not an issue.
2. I do not store backups on /. I use rsnapshot to same backup on an external hard drive.
3. I use Virtualbox but all my hard drives (VDI) are on /home.

After running Thunderbird, or other X applications between my server and my workstation, processes, notably dbus, remain behind on the server. Over time, they pile up, response becomes so poor I must restart the server to sweep them away. How can this be avoided or better dealt with than an occasionala reboot of the server, clearly not an optimal solution.

The program yum-complete-transaction is found in the yum-utils package. How to clean the cache? I don't want to run any of the transactions.

I've had this problem for a while and have eagerly awaited a fix, but have not received one. But the problem is when I'm either charging or on battery and I would click on the power manager the menu that pops up shows me the percentage of life remaining but does not give me any indication of how long I have until my battery is dead/fully charged.If I were to open up the Power Statistics window there is no information time to full or time to empty. Both are just empty.

Every single blank CD i put into my computer show it has 0 bytes of memory and i cannot write things onto them. I dual boot 9.10 and Windows XP, and Windows reads them just fine. Ubuntu will mount the disk as "Blank CD-R Disc, i can access it, and everything works except when i look at the properties it says there are 0 bytes used and 0 bytes free. The drive reads discs with data on them just fine, and they work flawlessly, its just blank discs that dont work. What i need to know is if there some property i need to change or a line i need to put in the terminal to make it read blank discs? Or am i completely screwed?
