Ubuntu :: Press Backspace To Delete An Entire Tab Instead Of Individual Spaces?

Jun 14, 2010

I write sources in VIM and i use the following settings:

set tabstop=4
set expandtab
set autoindent

And I have got some questions. 1:Is there any way I could do, so when I press backspace to delete an entire tab instead of individual spaces ? 2:Is there anything to do to delete a tab if I insert a closed curly bracket.

Code:
int main (void) {
} // <- and this one gets perfectly aligned

Ubuntu :: Press C To Continue To Wait Or Press S To Skip Mounting Or M For Manual Recovery?

Mar 23, 2011

I'm randomly getting 'Continue to wait; or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery...' or something like that at boot ((it flashes very quickly)- If I don't press anything, I'm prompted for my password (I configured it to login with password) and the desktop loads...

I'm using Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 -> Ultimate Edition Home

I was using my 1TB hdd to dual-boot linux, windows, and for storage...Yesterday, I imaged the linux partition, and restored it to an approximately 66GB partition I created on a 150GB hdd...Besides the 66GB partition, the rest of the 150GB hdd is 'unallocated space'... That's when the above message started...Below are screenshots of the fstab and partitions as they are now...

General :: Shell - Rename A File From Something Without Spaces To Something Containing Spaces?

Jan 26, 2010

Is it possible, in Linux, to rename a file from something without spaces to something containing spaces? I know I can create directories and files with spaces by doing:

mkdir "new dir" and:

touch "new file.txt"

I want to rename files from:

imgp0882.jpg to something like:

20091231 1243 some topic.jpg

And how would it look in a shell script that uses parameters like:

for i in *.jpg do
rename "$i" "$somepath/$mydate $mytime $mytopic$extension"
?

I'm new to Linux (using PCLinuxOS 2009.2), coming from Windows, and I've written myself a little shell script to download files from my camera and then automatically rename them according to a date-and-topic pattern. As you can guess by now, I'm stuck on the bit about renaming. If you want to see my script, here's a copy. I'm not using jhead for this renaming because that only works with JPEG files but I want a single solution for any media format including videos.

Fedora Installation :: 12 Windows Bootmanager - "BTMNGR Is Missing - Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete To Restart"

Feb 12, 2010

Though I kinda do wish that I could just fully migrate to Fedora (or Linux in general), I still do need Vista for some things (like, until I can get this mess with my tablet and speakers sorted out). However, when I tried to boot into Vista this morning (by selecting "other" in GRUB) it said "BTMNGR is missing. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart."

Will I have to use the Vista Home Premium installation disc to fix this? Surely, telling it to automatically fix startup problems would work, right? I'll try later today PS This problem could also be related to my other 'yum update' problems. All of my problems started when I performed a whole kernel update, so that could also be why I can't boot into vista.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Out Of The Crash With Ctrl-alt-backspace?

Feb 8, 2010

I am an Ubuntu/Linux noob, I installed Ubuntu a few weeks ago, and it sometimes gets extremely slow and crashes. I can't get out of the crash with ctrl-alt-backspace and I have even tried the key combinations suggested here to no avail.

Ubuntu 9.10
Computer:
IBM T42
mem 500 MiB
Intel Pentium 1.70GHz

The crashes usually involve Firefox being open + another program ( could be pdf reader, calibre, or something similar). I try to keep the amount of open Firefox tabs below 5 as it gets very, very slow (that was one of the reasons why I decided to install Ubuntu, in the old windows XP installation Firefox was also excruciatingly slow).

General :: How To Map Shift+Del To Backspace

Feb 23, 2011

One of the very few things I miss from Windows is that when you press LeftShift+Del the delete key acts like the backspace key, in other words you can use Del to delete forwards and LeftShift+Del to delete backwards.

I've been reading man pages such as xmodmap and used xev to get keycodes but I can't work out how to map LeftShift+Del to Backspace.

Can someone tell me how to do this please?

The desired behaviour is: delete the character left from the cursor. But when hitting the key always the right character is being deleted.how to set this up in the vimrc? I tried the following settings without success:

fixdel
set backspace=indent,eol,start
set nocompatible
set smartindent

[code]...

I even tried different combinations with h/H. And also a google search did not give a solution.

General :: Ubuntu 10.04 Freezing And Ctrl + Alt + Backspace Does Nothing But Music Keeps Playing

May 26, 2010

I'm having intermittent problems where the screen will freeze in Ubuntu. I've tried using Ctrl + Alt + Backspace to restart the X-server, though this does nothing. When the freeze occurs, there's a small square of black dashes around the mouse pointer - maybe 1 inch in size. These dashes look a lot like a 2d barcode. The rest of the screen looks normal, but I can't move the mouse and none of the keyboard shortcuts work to do anything. However, music that I begin playing before the freeze continues to play, which seems to indicate it hasn't stalled up completely.

I've noticed a similar freezing problem when I'm using Windows 7. That is, I see the same barcode like dashes around the mouse pointer when it freezes up. So I'm guessing it's either a driver or hardware problem. I thought if it was a hardware problem though, the whole computer might stop working (i.e. music would stop playing)? The video card I am using is an Nvidia, and I believe it's in the 7600 range. In Ubuntu I have the drivers for the card set to the latest available (proprietary). Ideally I'd like to be able to continue using the proprietary drivers. Is there any known issues with the drivers for this model graphics card

Fedora Installation :: Restore Is To Use Ctr-alt-backspace To Logout

Jun 28, 2009

So I just completed a clean install of Fedora 11 from the live CD. The only thing I've done to it thus far was to run the update manager once. Next item on the agenda was to configure my display to correctly handle my two monitors, but if I open up the controls and select 'Display' both my monitors instantly go blank. The only way to restore them is to use ctr-alt-backspace to logout. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon x800L, and right now I'm using the default ati driver that came with the system.
