Ubuntu :: Opinion On Development Builds?

Nov 3, 2010

What is your opinion on *very* early development builds of Ubuntu? I decided to post this poll because I have *already* upgraded to the Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" Pre-Alpha.

Please explain your votes in detail. Edit: Sorry for not posting the poll; accidentally posted too fast.

Programming :: [Bash] Denied Script * Opinion's Welcome *?

Jan 30, 2011

wrote a simple script that will Parse Secure log find the failed login attempts, and strip out the IP Address. Then take those address and create a file listing them. Thx to colucix for the awk understanding which is then fed into Nmap grabbing OS and Ports that are open on that remote machine -> output is shoved threw Sed only grabbing the Characteristics I felt were need. The output from that is piped into another Directory called Nmap/ and files are created with the output and ipaddress for the file name;

Then that same list that was fed into Nmap is fed into Whois and output is shoved into SED striping out the non-sense getting only valuable info. Those are then put into the Whois/ with the file names being the IP Address and whois info dumped into them. There are lots of paths I can go to continue the chain with all this info... But for now it just merges the Whois Info and Nmap Info into a Master File which is then fed to ssmtp to send an email with the Info to whatever address you like.Put it in a cron job, and it executes every night at 11pm with the secure log being rotated out at 1105pm. Cycle is then repeated. Like I said this is really my first Bash Script.

I have done Batch script with, remote printer mappings, and default printer setups. But thats here nor thereWhat I am really looking for since this script is functional, is your criticism and your technique on another way of accomplishing the objective your critiquing. Just trying to build my skills and look at this process from another perspective.

Code:
echo 'Grabbing the IPs'
# Grabbing IP's from secure log, putting them in the ip array, and then spiting out the

Fedora :: Latest MPLAYER Rpm Builds?

Mar 18, 2011

It seems like all mplayer rpm builds have stopped being updated. The latest in rpmfusion is about a year old. I've tried to find other places for newer rpm builds but there is nothing out there. I need a new mplayer, because the current one does not support subtitles in bluray movies, the SVN builds have had this feature for many months.

Anyone knows what is going on? Is there a particular reason why nobody updates rpm builds for mplayer for such a long time?

Fedora :: Audacious 2.5.2 For F15 (Latest Builds)

Jun 30, 2011

Status update:
Latest builds including a few more fixes will hit updates-testing with the next push: [URL]
This time, karma automatism is enabled, so the update will hit the stable updates repo after either +3 votes or after 7 days. Regardless of whether the -freeworld packages are available. Those are being worked on as well, but since RPM Fusion doesn't build their packages against Test Updates, it seems they don't spend the extra effort on pulling the Test Updates into their buildroot and instead wait till those get marked stable.

General :: DD Imaging Of Builds Better Understanding

Nov 12, 2010

I am learning how to use DD for creating images across networks and locally but needed some clarification.
1 - When creating an image, I noticed that there is no verbose to show you the progress, How can I accomplish this?

2 - When I run this on a 8G usbstick it takes a long time to image. How can I speed up this process?
PHP Code:
dd if=/dev/sdb of=/home/test/images/image.dd

3 - When an image is restored like
PHP Code:
dd if=/home/test/images/image.dd of=/dev/sdb
will that give me a working bootable usbstick? For example if I imaged a working usbstick with Ubuntu on it using DD and restored it like the example above on a different usbstick, will this give me a booting new usbstick? I hope that came across ok?

Slackware :: KDE 4.4.4 Builds Fine With 4.4.3 Slackbuild?

If 13.1 and KDE 4.4.3 aren't new enough for anyone, I've just successfully built and installed KDE 4.4.4 with the slackbuilds for 4.4.3. I had to edit the Slackbuild for kdenetwork by commenting out the line that patches the source. Other than that everything seems to be fine, although I don't know yet if this is a good thing or a bad thing since I've just got it installed.

Fedora :: Firefox Theme Incorrect On Official Builds?

Jul 31, 2011

I am running the Aurora browser (Firefox 7.0a2) and the theme looks very wrong. It looks kinda like the Windows classic theme. Using the Firefox in the Fedora repos has the proper appearance. For that reason, I figured it was just the Aurora builds with a bug. I just downloaded Firefox 5.0.1 from the website, and that has the exact same issue as Aurora. On my main PC which runs Ubuntu + Firefox nightlies, there's no such issue. Selecting the "Default" theme does nothing because it is apparently already in use.

General :: Calling A Shell Script To Make Few Builds

Jul 27, 2011

I am setting up a cron job, where i am calling a shell script to make few builds. I got struck at a point, need some expert inputs to proceed further. The script is categorized in 5 parts and in the last part while building software it asks for few questions like:-

1. Build mode choice
2. normal build
3. Copy Images
4. Arch

User manually has to input ans for these questions:-
1
yes
n
64

The ans's are fixed and this won't change. How shall i hard-code them or do something in the script so as when script flow reaches to this point it automatically take's these value. So far the cron job is not getting completed as it's waiting for user to key in these values manually. I had faced similar issue while building kernel modules but there it was easier as i had to take default values always:-

Fedora Installation :: F12 - Builds And Source Shown As Broken Links

Mar 10, 2010

I had F11 which was working OK'ish on my laptop and decided to upgrade to F12 when it was available. This was not too successful and I started getting problem with updates to the extent that I could not install any as I got errors which stopped the updates. Bit the bullet and backed up all the data then wiped the disk and started from a clean downloaded DVD of the full F12. Still getting problems running the updates (output below) and trying to install/run VirtualBox is also failing (also below). The build and source mentioned show as broken links, where do I go next?

Fedora :: Mplayer Builds With Video Acceleration And Multi-threading Support?

Sep 4, 2009

I thought this may be of interest, so I'm sharing. I've built some experimental mplayer packages for Fedora 11 and Rawhide (x86-32 and x86-64 arches) with shiny new features. Aside from being very recent snapshots, one of them includes support for hardware video playback acceleration via VDPAU and VAAPI, and the other includes support for multi-threaded playback (so you can split the decoding load across multiple cores).

The playback acceleration can definitely be used on NVIDIA adapters (from the GeForce 8xxx series onwards) using the proprietary driver (not, unfortunately, nouveau). Also on Intel Poulsbo (GMA 500) adapters, using my packaged version of the native driver for that chipset (link is in the blog post). VDPAU acceleration is also allegedly possible on S3 Chrome 530 GT and S3 Chrome 540 GTX adapters using S3s own driver, but I haven't had the chance to test that. Multi-threaded playback can be done on any system, but only really makes sense on those with multiple processors (cores).

Full details of where, how and why are in my blog post:[URL]..

Ubuntu Networking :: Installing Newer Version Of Network-manager In Lucid - From Daily Trunk Builds Ppa

Aug 9, 2010

This is only for Lucid and Maverick, as there's no 0.8.1 builds for other releases in this ppa. Why?

Because today there seems to be a fuss about 3g usb-modems. And as of network-manager version 0.8.1, there is added support for those and some more.

The release features for current version 0.8.1, from gnome.org

Lucid ships with an earlier version and there's a ppa for daily builds (that could break, so use it on need-only-basis).

Visit the link, or google: NetworkManager daily trunk builds for ubuntu

Follow the steps on the site to add it in the repositories.

After that, it's just a simple

Code:

apt will update the needed files. Then reboot, you're done.

I strongly recommend, that you disable the PIN code query for your SIM card and enable 'Connect automatically' from:

As this seems to be more reliable than connecting/reconnecting manually from the applet list. After that, it's plug&play.

I use the modem Huawei E1820 (uses option1 driver) and for me, this update...
- gives you the ability to choose the desired network; 3G only, 3G pref., EDGE etc.
- Then it shows the signal strength and the technology used atm.; HSPA, UMTS etc.

And the main reason I installed it, bluetooth DUN support. So far it has been working great with Lucid on 32bit architecture, and I don't have to disconnect the modem between boots, or after suspend/resume.

None of these make the 'event sounds' available.

Ubuntu :: Download All Development Libraries At Once?

Feb 10, 2011

It seems to me that if I could download every single development library or dependency available for Linux/Ubuntu, that it would make my life a whole lot easier as for as acquiring software. All I would have to do then is run configure/make/make install which isn't that bad.

The problem being here that the repositories in Ubuntu suck. In fact, they suck in all Linux distributions. The only things they are good for is gathering dependencies needed to compile programs. All the packages that I actually want are frozen and therefore are outdated and useless. I've had to learn how to compile stuff just so I could get the programs working like they do in Windows. Except in Windows all I had to do was double click on the file and not spend hours figuring out what to do.

Then of course there is the other problem that about 90% of the software I need is not included in these repositories.

Have Linux people not heard of the Internet? The ultimate repository? It sure works well in Windows.

Anyway, if there is a way to download all these files in one go (because let's face it, I'll have them all downloaded eventually) I would like to know how. Even if they take up 100's of gigs it would be worth it for the savings in time and energy.
