Ubuntu :: (firefox And Npviewer) X64/V9.10 'uninterruptible' Processess - All The Time

Apr 14, 2010

I'm having where processes (firefox and npviewer seem to be major culprits) just lock up taking excessive (i.e. 100% of the CPU) and state' 'uninterruptible' in the system monitor. This carries through to all my other processes (windows) and makes them unresponsive. What's worse, is when the system gets in this state, even the system monitor itself becomes 'gray' and unresponsive. Often 30 seconds later, I can get a 2 second window with which to access my system monitor (it becomes colored again) before going gray again. During that small window, I might be able to kill the offending processes.

Problem is, the system does this literally all the time. Like when I have firefox open with perhaps 4 tabs, that's all it takes to cause everything to begin locking up -- and at times, that might be the only application open that causes this system lock up. Other things that seem to trigger this is if firefox is running and the system update opens up. I am simply finding Ubuntu to just not be reliable enough, and as much as I hate the idea of switching back to windows, if I can't find a solution (that has been plaguing me for months) I don't see any other choice. Sadly, I find very little information on a solution to this problem, but, searching through the forums and on google, I can see that I am not alone.

General :: CPU / Fan Overuse ( Npviewer.bin, Java ) Temps Up To 68C?

May 2, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Insp. 1545 2.16 GHZ 3GB RAM I have the following problem that I don't have on Vista. Problems:

1. Fan is running almost constantly
2. Cpu temps reaching 69C, stable at 54C
3. Temps spike especially with Java and npviewer.bin (in both FF/CHROME)

Ex. In system monitor, npviewer and Java take up about 90%, and while running, the CPUs are at 1. 80% 2. 90%. However, even when these processes are killed, basic activity (FF, file browsing etc) cpu% stay near 50/70, and fan stays on. Question: any suggestions? I heard restricted drivers could cause this problem. Any thoughts?

Ubuntu :: Firefox Is Eating CPU?

I just noticed that Firefox really likes my CPU. I opened the same page in Firefox and in Google Chrome and look at the difference in the attachment.Mind that the 20% is not even the maximum I saw in the list. I even saw around 40% while Chrome (with the same page) although has several processes open they all stay at zero, or very close to it.

Ubuntu :: Log Files Eating Hard Disk Space?

Jan 29, 2009

running ubuntu 8.10 amd64 on my HP intel 2.26ghz dual core processor, 320gb hdd and 4gb ram. My main problem is that when I dual booted ubuntu onto my laptop, I had vista already installed, so I only set aside 20GB of hard disk space for ubuntu, which seems like more than enough to me. What's going on is that it says I have used all my space and only have one GB left, when the only thing I have on my computer are word files and necessary installs like flash player, compiz, avant, etc. When trying to hunt down what was using all my space, first I checked out the disk usage analyzer (some pics from here in):theres my hdd with 1/19 gb remaining here's a breakdown of my home folder, showing that it's not using very much at allhere's my filesystem, now we can see that all the space is being used in the folder: /var

Fedora :: Npviewer Segfaults - Firefox Sometimes Shows The Title Of A Page In A Tab But The Page Is Blank

Nov 23, 2009

On FC11 64 bit with Adobe flash plugin for Linux installed, I see segfault errors from "npviewer" in /var/log/messages. The only browser I have tried yet, Firefox, has glitches every now and then. Sometimes it shows the title of a page in a tab, but the page is blank. This can even happen when I try the Google main page. Is it true that npviewer has something to do with Adobe flash? Is there a way to fix the problem? If it is caused by Adobe flash, is there a different plugin that will replace Adobe flash player?

Ubuntu :: Xorg Eating A Lot Of Memory / Makes System Freeze

Apr 7, 2011

Xorg takes 700+ mbs of ram, then in matter of hours it fills the swap and then system basically stops responding or whatever. And because its constantly allocating, it degrades perforamce horribly.Interesting thing is I never had this problem before, recently one of my ram modules broke (2+2 GB) and now I have only one, but it still doesnt explain the memory overuse. Windows 7 works perfectly fine.

Debian Multimedia :: Xserver Eating Memory?

I have installed Debian Lenny today from netinst cd. It all went good, hen I installed some basic utilities, daemons and libraries like dbus, hal, libgtk2.0, libasound2, alsa-utils, htop (for checking system load). Then I installed X.org with commandaptitude install -R xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input-mouse xserver-xorg-input-kbd xserver-xorg-video-intel xinit xterm twmI used -R to pull less dependencies. When I ran startx X Server started, and I got on twm. But when I checked on htop, my memory usage was 175MB, and before starting X Server it was only 25MB. Why is X Server using so much memory on Lenny? I also have Debian Sqeeze on a different partition, it uses so much memory with all gnome services running+ iceweasel and amsn.

Fedora X86/64bit :: F11 - Plasma-desktop Eating RAM ?

Nov 25, 2009

I have Fedora 11 64bit installed and using KDE with all the updates . I noticed that after a few days of work the plasma-desktop process is eating abnormal quantities of memory - resident size can grow up to 1 GB, by then KDE gets so unresponsive that you have to restart the session anyway.

I don't use desktop effects and no plasmoids either (even got rid of the folder view of desktop), the graphics are Intel 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller with the default (intel) driver. I have dual monitor setup (1600x1200 and 1024x786), to get them work correctly I had to come up with a custom xorg.conf and xrandr (if someone thinks xorg.conf contents can be relevant, I can post them, too).

I've seen reports of memory leaks in versions 4.2, but none so severe as is my case.

Below is the top command (sorted by RSS) after just 5 days of usage, showing plasma-desktop consuming growing towards 500MB:

How to stop it consuming so much RAM? This is a real annoyance, since it slows down the whole machine because of induced swapping.

Server :: Can't Figure Out Which Processes Are Eating Memory

TOP command reports as follows:

Something misterious to me (I'm still a Linux newbie) is that TOP reports a total of 7.5GB used ram but very small percentage for single process (0-1%). Memory consumption starts at 1GB/8GB after reboot and in three days running gradually increases up to 8GB. I'm practising with Linux, but I still miss a lot to understand what's happening on my system. For instance, are there linux kernel logs saved somewhere that I can look at?

Ubuntu :: ".ecryptfs" Is Eating Up HDD Space

Jan 7, 2011

When I installed the system I went ahead and added the private/ecryptfs feature. However, I have never actively (or at least "awaringly") used it. I don't know if it is being used passively or if it contains any of my important data that I cannot already otherwise access.

There is also a problem with space constantly reducing. I'm losing HDD space and I'm not aware of what is causing it. I've tried clearing caches, tmp, things like that, disabling internet, not running applications that would tend to eat at the hard drives. But no luck. And the space free is being very weird. A few days ago I had 700M remaining on my "/" partition (it's a 19G (almost 20G) partition), then a day later I had several gigs free but I did nothing, then another day later it was back to 800M or 700M free. Something very fishy is going on here.

Regardless, my focus on this thread is that dang ".ecryptfs". Can I get rid of it *without* losing data? Disk usage analyzer, partition with a little over 19G: /home is using 20G ...somehow... (and on a 19G partition?!) weird. The main user account home is using 9.7G ...the ".ecryptfs" is using 10.2G. I really do not want that 10.2G to be used just for the sake of some shady ecrypt feature.

Ubuntu Installation :: New Ubuntu User Can't Load Ubuntu Or Windows

Oct 7, 2010

I'm currently running off of my live-cd, and after spending 4 hours of my life trying to fix this myself, i figured someone out here has to know how to help me. Basically, i wanted to try linux, then liked it enough to decide to put on one of my usb-drives (320g adata nobility NH92), and i couldn't get it to boot anything but windows w/o the live-cd, which would then boot the live-cd, lol, in other words, i couldn't get it to boot at all from the external, even though i had changed the setting in my bios to boot from usb first, and tried manually selecting boot from usb and all that fun stuff.

Sooo... eventually i decided it might be a problem with the bootloader, and while i'm not exactly sure at this point what i have done to my computer, all i can successfully boot is the live cd. When I try to boot w/o the live cd, whether i try to boot from my internal (windows) drive, or external, all i get is a device not found error.I think i could fix it if i had windows recovery cd's (i'm running xp, btw), or installation cds, but... unfortunately, they died in a terrible accident. So i have no cd's at all for windows. :/
