Server :: Stop Someone Eating All The Memory?
Apr 17, 2011If I have a centos linux server, how can I stop a user on the server from eating all the memory and swap space memory, maybe due to a poorly written script, infinite loop etc?

View 4 RepliesI'm running several SHOUTcast server instances and a WowzaMediaServer instance on a CentOS machine. I'm experiencing a memory leak problem, but I can't figure out which processes are eating memory.
TOP command reports as follows:
[Code]...
Something misterious to me (I'm still a Linux newbie) is that TOP reports a total of 7.5GB used ram but very small percentage for single process (0-1%). Memory consumption starts at 1GB/8GB after reboot and in three days running gradually increases up to 8GB. I'm practising with Linux, but I still miss a lot to understand what's happening on my system. For instance, are there linux kernel logs saved somewhere that I can look at?
I have had a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 and installed some software after that.Since third some, some process is eating half of my memory.I have checked processes running in system manager but everything is normal.Maximum is consumed by compiz which is about 26 mb, seems very normal.I did restarted my computer several times, and in the start for 5 mins, its fine after that again my cpu fans runs at very fast speed and my one cpu is used up 95 % (I have dual core). Please help me out, this invisible thing is driving me crazy.I am attaching my htop screen shot (sorted by cpu %), now the cpu is not used by completely but fan is still struggling hard and fast.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed Debian Lenny today from netinst cd. It all went good, hen I installed some basic utilities, daemons and libraries like dbus, hal, libgtk2.0, libasound2, alsa-utils, htop (for checking system load). Then I installed X.org with commandaptitude install -R xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input-mouse xserver-xorg-input-kbd xserver-xorg-video-intel xinit xterm twmI used -R to pull less dependencies. When I ran startx X Server started, and I got on twm. But when I checked on htop, my memory usage was 175MB, and before starting X Server it was only 25MB. Why is X Server using so much memory on Lenny? I also have Debian Sqeeze on a different partition, it uses so much memory with all gnome services running+ iceweasel and amsn.

Problem: my server eats up all the memory in the box after a few days. My guess is it has something to do with these processes:

Xorg takes 700+ mbs of ram, then in matter of hours it fills the swap and then system basically stops responding or whatever. And because its constantly allocating, it degrades perforamce horribly.Interesting thing is I never had this problem before, recently one of my ram modules broke (2+2 GB) and now I have only one, but it still doesnt explain the memory overuse. Windows 7 works perfectly fine.
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy server is keep on hanging So I have rebooted several times in the last couple of weeks, the system is eating more memory and the usage is keep on increasing and at particular time it became saturated and my server hungs. I could not find which process is eating more memory. I have used the below commands to check if any process is eating more memory but no luck. No such process are using high memory.
1) Top
2) ps -eo pcpu,pmem,user,args

I want to test that a process properly kills itself and restarts when it can't allocate needed memory. One idea I had was to start other memory-consuming processes and hope that OOM killer kills the process being tested, but 1) this isn't quite the same; 2) it may kill other processes instead; 3) since this is an embedded system, I don't have any programs available except for the system under test and BusyBox.Is there a more direct way to ensure that Linux won't allocate memory to a process?

View 3 Replies View Relatedwe found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been setting up a vps I got out with bhost.net, with CentOS installed. I've been learning and have set up everying I need with the exception of ftp/sftp.
Using yum I installed vsftpd and ran into problems, thinking it was something I might of done I did a fresh install of CentOS and I still recieve the same problem on a fresh install so it is nothing I have done to the server.
The problem is when connecting via a sftp client I get an out of memory error. This error is listed in the putty faq ( url ) under A.7.5, there is a brief explaintion of the cure under A.7.6.
there is mention of a login script but I don't know where this is located. I'm a novice at Linux but by no means incompotent when it comes to computing.
I have a query regarding top & virtual memory. When we run top it show VIRT (Virtual Mem), RES (Resident Mem) & SHR (Shared Memory). The total virtual memory of my machine is 4 GBs (2 GB RAM + 2 GB Swap), but still I am able to see a process showing 4000m virtual memory column. what it means, as its show VIRT Mem more than actual available VIRT memory

I opened the same page in Firefox and in Google Chrome and look at the difference in the attachment.Mind that the 20% is not even the maximum I saw in the list. I even saw around 40% while Chrome (with the same page) although has several processes open they all stay at zero, or very close to it.

I have Fedora 11 64bit installed and using KDE with all the updates . I noticed that after a few days of work the plasma-desktop process is eating abnormal quantities of memory - resident size can grow up to 1 GB, by then KDE gets so unresponsive that you have to restart the session anyway.
I don't use desktop effects and no plasmoids either (even got rid of the folder view of desktop), the graphics are Intel 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller with the default (intel) driver. I have dual monitor setup (1600x1200 and 1024x786), to get them work correctly I had to come up with a custom xorg.conf and xrandr (if someone thinks xorg.conf contents can be relevant, I can post them, too).
I've seen reports of memory leaks in versions 4.2, but none so severe as is my case.
Below is the top command (sorted by RSS) after just 5 days of usage, showing plasma-desktop consuming growing towards 500MB:
How to stop it consuming so much RAM? This is a real annoyance, since it slows down the whole machine because of induced swapping.
Last weekend i've set up my first headless ubuntu home file server and torrent downloader with ubuntu 9.10.Very cool but CPU is way too fast for a home server: P4 HT 2.8Ghz, unfortunatly it has only 256Mb of ram, so no X server and no VNC (old HP office pc) At the moment memory usage is only 40Mb without X server. Besides SSH works just fine Few questions i can't seem to find answers to on google:What is a good CL network monitoring program?mething similar to htopUbuntu 9.10 has a lot, about 20-30, console-kit deamon instanses running after boot each using some memory that i can't spare.
View 2 Replies View RelatedLast week my server crashed. I'm trying to diagnose the cause.
This is the relevant error message in /var/log/messages:
Code:
I'm assuming that I can conclude, then, that apache/httpd was the cause of the memory leak?
Next, I've been tracking my memory usage. Using top, this is an average memory load level for my server:
Code:
I'd like to confirm if my understanding of this data is correct, because Plesk indicates that my memory usage is only 50% or less. (Though I have read a number of reports indicating that Plesk's measurements are frequently wrong.)
Top says: Of the 2,073,156K total memory, 1,982,572K (95.63%) is being used, 90,584K (4.37%) is free. Of that sum, 421,948K (20.35%) are being used as buffers. Additionally, of the 2,096,472K of Swap, 60K is used, and 887,700K (42.34%) is cached.
My questions: Is my memory actually being 95% used? Or is the buffered quantity (20.35%) not a use of physical/virtual memory? (i.e. is it disk usage?) Does the amount of cached Swap influence the percentage of physical/virtual memory being used?
In other words, who is correct? Plesk says I'm using 40-50% of my memory, whereas top says 85-95%.
I am connecting servers using NFS4 the shared directories are on servers running Debian 4 while the one who read from them is Debian 5.0.3. The problem is one of these shared servers suddenly stop responding and you cannot list it from Debian 5 server, also df hang, and the web application that is using it does not respond to requests that use this shared directory since it is blocked. Then the load on the server start to increase until the server cannot respond (over 90). I have found many entries in the syslog that refer to this like:
ma25555 kernel: [1200285.732919] nfs: server 10.xxx.xxx.xxx not responding, still trying

I have tried the connection between the 2 servers using ping for one day and all are OK (zero lost)
There are 3 other servers that are running Debian 4 and are working fine.

running ubuntu 8.10 amd64 on my HP intel 2.26ghz dual core processor, 320gb hdd and 4gb ram. My main problem is that when I dual booted ubuntu onto my laptop, I had vista already installed, so I only set aside 20GB of hard disk space for ubuntu, which seems like more than enough to me. What's going on is that it says I have used all my space and only have one GB left, when the only thing I have on my computer are word files and necessary installs like flash player, compiz, avant, etc. When trying to hunt down what was using all my space, first I checked out the disk usage analyzer (some pics from here in):theres my hdd with 1/19 gb remaining here's a breakdown of my home folder, showing that it's not using very much at allhere's my filesystem, now we can see that all the space is being used in the folder: /var

Our mail server keeps on hanging after a while. This happened after there was a breakdown in electricity supply and the server room air conditioners stopped working for almost half a day. We are not sure whether this is a server hardware problem or a coincidence with a break-in attempt or malware activity.

I'm looking for a way to put a MySQL database in a server's memory. The disks aren't fast enough to keep up with the usage and I don't feel like going for a splitted web&db server yet because of the costs.
Because this involves risks (unless there's a way to read from the memory and write to the memory AND disks?), so I'd prefer that the DB gets copied automatically every hour or so to the local disks.
Below you'll see that my home server is currently maxed with something hidden.I noticed that my machine was maxed so i ran a du on / to see where the issue was happening. I freed up 6gbs so far and ~ciaranw keeps eating up any free disk space. But when i look to see what in the folder could be doing this, i get nothing back that accounts for the currently 19gbs thereI've been a long time user of forums but never found the need to actually post seeing as my problem was usually covered, this problem has stumped my googling prowess
