General :: CPU / Fan Overuse ( Npviewer.bin, Java ) Temps Up To 68C?

May 2, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Insp. 1545 2.16 GHZ 3GB RAM I have the following problem that I don't have on Vista. Problems:

1. Fan is running almost constantly
2. Cpu temps reaching 69C, stable at 54C
3. Temps spike especially with Java and npviewer.bin (in both FF/CHROME)

Ex. In system monitor, npviewer and Java take up about 90%, and while running, the CPUs are at 1. 80% 2. 90%. However, even when these processes are killed, basic activity (FF, file browsing etc) cpu% stay near 50/70, and fan stays on. Question: any suggestions? I heard restricted drivers could cause this problem. Any thoughts?

Ubuntu :: (firefox And Npviewer) X64/V9.10 'uninterruptible' Processess - All The Time

Apr 14, 2010

I'm having where processes (firefox and npviewer seem to be major culprits) just lock up taking excessive (i.e. 100% of the CPU) and state' 'uninterruptible' in the system monitor. This carries through to all my other processes (windows) and makes them unresponsive. What's worse, is when the system gets in this state, even the system monitor itself becomes 'gray' and unresponsive. Often 30 seconds later, I can get a 2 second window with which to access my system monitor (it becomes colored again) before going gray again. During that small window, I might be able to kill the offending processes.

Problem is, the system does this literally all the time. Like when I have firefox open with perhaps 4 tabs, that's all it takes to cause everything to begin locking up -- and at times, that might be the only application open that causes this system lock up. Other things that seem to trigger this is if firefox is running and the system update opens up. I am simply finding Ubuntu to just not be reliable enough, and as much as I hate the idea of switching back to windows, if I can't find a solution (that has been plaguing me for months) I don't see any other choice. Sadly, I find very little information on a solution to this problem, but, searching through the forums and on google, I can see that I am not alone.

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Taking Over The MBR?

Dec 11, 2009

11.2 doesn't install Grub in the MBR by default, more precisely it doesn't highlight that choice during setup. But in fact it does occasionally (?) install Grub in the MBR, even when explicitely instructed not to do so. I'm starting to better understand people wondering why their Ubuntu vanished from bootmenu and swearing they did not install Grub in MBR. I'm quite sure I already experienced this issue with 11.1 as well as while installing my first 11.2. Now I decided to install 11.2 on another machine and pay double attention. I normally DON'T install openSUSE Grub in MBR. Somebody has to go in there and at the moment, I prefer to have Ubuntu's Grub2. I ran the installation twice. The first time, I added the root partition to the default location, which was in this case the extended partition's bootsector (sda4). The second time, I simply didn't touch anything. According to setup, the bootloder was supposed to get in the extended partition. I carefully copied down what the setup screen said. Here's :

BootingBoot Loader Type: GRUB
Status Location: /dev/sda4 (extended)
Change Location:Boot from MBR is disabled (enable)
Boot from "/" partition is disabled (enable)

I installed, rebooted and ended up with openSUSE Grub in MBR. Well, my partition tables are not the most usual ones. The first primary is always a 252MB FAT16. Second and third primaries are Unix. The extended partition is full of logical ones used for different Linux distros. At the end on the logical partitions, the Linux kernel adds up devices for the Unix slices found in the the other primaries after it read the FreeBSD disklabels (but not during setup). Maybe this is just my unconventional partitioning that openSUSE setup doesnt' like. However is that a reason for taking over my MBR ? Since I suspect I might not be the only one experiencing this problem (according to some threads), I thought I would report this behaviour.

BTW I just installed a Fedora 12 on the same kind of machine. It would have written its bootloader into MBR (by default) but respected my choice as I selected the root partition instead. I'm going to install openSUSE on that machine as well, deselect the extended partition and choose only the root partition as destination for Grub.

OpenSUSE Install :: GRUN Dominates, And Is Taking Over Everything?

Apr 6, 2010

I currently have opensuse 11.2 - gnome installed on my laptop ( Toshiba Satellite m45-s265).I am trying to boot oof of my opensuse 11.2 DVD (32-bit) and its just not happening. For this particular computer I have to hit f10 upon startup to chose where I boot from. I chose cd-rom, it goes to bootsplash. I even went as far to adjust my BIOS settings to boot directly from CD, grub - bootsplash screen. When I initially installed 11.2 I never had this problem. I have never messed with grub, or BIOS on this cpu before.

OpenSUSE :: SuSE To SuSE Remote Desktop?

Mar 5, 2010

What would be the preferred method to establish a remote desktop session from one 11.2 machine to another 11.2 machine in the same location? No firewalls, local connection only. I've looked at VNC, RDP with xrdp, have not been able to establish a session to desktop. I would rather not use desktop sharing if possible, don't want invitations involved. Want something similar to hitting from Windows with VNC3and taking over the established desktop session. This is in my house, no security risks involved

Fedora :: Npviewer Segfaults - Firefox Sometimes Shows The Title Of A Page In A Tab But The Page Is Blank

Nov 23, 2009

On FC11 64 bit with Adobe flash plugin for Linux installed, I see segfault errors from "npviewer" in /var/log/messages. The only browser I have tried yet, Firefox, has glitches every now and then. Sometimes it shows the title of a page in a tab, but the page is blank. This can even happen when I try the Google main page. Is it true that npviewer has something to do with Adobe flash? Is there a way to fix the problem? If it is caused by Adobe flash, is there a different plugin that will replace Adobe flash player?

OpenSUSE :: Lazarus Gives Error In Suse 11.3

Dec 3, 2010

Lazarus (Free pascal) I ve reinstalled (Packman repos..) and this seems OK on suse 11.3 but when I click Show - units or Show - Forms I get an Acces Violation error. (and cannot open the form) This happens on Suse 11.3 on both my PC as on my laptop On the laptop both on Gnome and KDE. On suse 11.1 Lazarus works fine on both PC and laptop Also on MyApplication (written in Lazarus)

I get an error on suse 11.3 while not on 11.1 (on the laptop I did a clean 11.3 install to make sure no old 11.1 settings were still active) For this reason I downgraded my laptop back to 11.1 to keep my business application to be usefull. I don't think the problem is with Lazarus for it is the same version number. Is this a known bug or has someone a working Lazarus 09.28.2 on suse 11.3?

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Use SuSe And Cannot Remove It

Sep 11, 2010

I have installed 11.3 and really hashed it. I am getting no where and cannot find my way around. I tried to install as a partition with Ubuntu and Windows 7. Result. I have lost Both Ubuntu and windows with SUSE 11.3 installed and with YAST2 (as superuser) I cannot install belkin to get an internet connection, cannot instal Ubuntu or any thing else. I get the following;

[/media/Ubuntu 9.10 i386/wubi.exe] End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the centraldirectory and zipfile cannot be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of the /media/Ubuntu 9.10 i386/wubi.exe or /media/Ubuntu 9.10 i386/wubi.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/Ubuntu 9.10 i386/wubi.exe.ZIP, period

I think I have not only installed this incorrectly but I have something I don't fully understand.

I would like to reinstall Ubuntu and then if I cannot get on with SUSE
