Ubuntu :: Not Connecting To All XP Computers?
Sep 4, 2010
I have configured Ubuntu 10.04 to work on a Windows XP network that has 2 other XP desktops (wired to same router). Ubuntu sees the icons for each computer in the "network" tab of "places" and can access the shared files 1 of those desktops, no problem, but trying to access the other one gets the error "Unable to mount location-failed to retrieve share list from server" I have checked the XP computers and can't find what may be different about them.

I'm trying to connect 2 Ubuntu computers with a crossover cable (ethernet). I found the following thread:
[URL]
Its says to go to:
1. In System > Preferences > Network Connections
and under IPv4 tab, change Method to Link-Local Only.
The problem for me is I'm using Xubuntu 9.04 (on 1 of them) and I don't have "Network Connections". Is there a way to get this utility in Xubuntu 9.04 so I can set the method to 'Link local only' ?

When I try to use Nautilus to connect to another computer on my network, and I attempt to connect using the name of the Windows XP computer I am connecting to, I get the following error; Could not display "smb://computername/". Error: Failed to retrieve share list from server Please select another viewer and try again. However when I attempt to connect using the IP address on the network, it connects instantly. smb://192.168.1.101/ Why doesn't it connect using the computer's name? What am I doing wrong?

I have two computers, a laptop and a workstation, both running linux (Ubuntu and Fedora). For some reasons, it's handier for me to work from the laptop, accessing the workstation only from remote. At present, I have to connect to the workstation using a very complicated system that implies VPN + ssh passing through the internet. It works, but it would be far easier and faster if I could set up a direct connection between the two computers. Unfortunately, I can't use the ethernet ports or wi-fi (it's a long story why, but I really can't).I own a usb data transfer cable, but I don't know how to use it.

I have installed 10.04 on both my laptop and my desktop computer. the desktop was pre-installed with 9.10 then upgraded to 10.04, the laptop was pre-installed with 9.04then upgraded to 10.04. There are a few differences in the look of the desktop but the most notable is the fact that the window controls for the desktop are on the left and the windows controls for the laptop are on the right . Any thoughts as to how this happened or what went wrong. Both were upgraded at the same time.

I have two computers. One has UNR installed and the other Karmic. I back up my home folder from Karmic monthly. Is there any reason why I could not just copy the home folder from Karmic over the UNR home folder to synchronize my computers? I wasn't sure if UNR might not like this idea...

We have 5 computers networked with 9.04 installed. On some days, when you click on Place -> Network, then all the computers will show. On other days, like today, it does not show. However, one can ping them and I have been able to print to one computer which has the printer attached. SAMBA is installed on the computers for file and printer sharing.

I can't seem to figure out how to even share files between my laptop and desktop. They are both Ubuntu 9.10. I thought maybe samba was the way but couldn't figure it out. I was looking at the ssh that comes with Ubuntu and been trying to get it to work but don't know what I'm doing wrong. I type: ssh username@computername and it give me a little info. Don't know what I'm suppose to do then. I looked at the network folder on my laptop and it seem to see it but everytime I click on it ask for a password and I can't get in since I don't know the right password. I'm not sure if this is the best software to use or not. Just wanted something to look at and transfer from my desktop to my laptop and vice versa.

I have a small home network. Computers A and B are both running Kubuntu Lucid. Computer A has an external USB hard drive attached, partitioned ext3 and mounted to a folder in computer A's home folder. Computer C is running Vista. I installed Samba, and computer C can access all the files on both computers A and B. But using Samba, computers A and B can't see each other OR computer C. That's not really important to me, but they can't
So I installed NFS and got computers A and B talking that way. I like NFS better. It's faster than Samba. BUT, computer B can't access computer A's USB drive, and I need it to do that. When I'm using computer B and I click on the folder the drive is mounted to, the file manager just shows the folder as empty.

My laptop LAN card has died, and know I need another way to transfer files between my desktop and my laptop.
Wireless doesn't work, since I need to transfer huge amount of data (a couple of GB) and the file transfer just stops in the middle.
Anyway, I was wondering if it is possible to connect the two computers with USB cable and transfer files between them through the USB cable.

if there is a way to determine the external ip of other computers on a network. For example, if someone is sending malicious emails and you identify the ip that sent the email by looking at the original, is there a way from the terminal to figure out which computer on your network it was?

I'm using Ubuntu on my laptop but I'm having a small problem. The network is working fine except for the fact that I can't reach anything on my LAN (can't even ping the router), but everything on the outside works just fine. I can even visit my webserver if I type my public IP.
Where should I begin looking for faults?
Here, enjoy some data. I'm using my wlan0 interface, not sure whether eth0 works or not.

Is an older version of Ubuntu or other Linux OS available that would work well in my older computer?
I have a computer that is about 11 years old that I would like to put to use. It is not the only computer at my home. I would just like to use it since I still have it. It will run Windows ME that came installed in it very well. Problem with that is that I am not able to locate virus and firewell software that will run on old versions such as ME.
An upgrade to XP is just to slow to live with. I loaded the latest Ubuntu 11.04 that works just fine other than it is even slower than is XP.
The computer is a tower type of desktop that has an 800 mhz Celeron processor with the maximum memory possible that is 512 kb if I recall correctly. I am connected to a 512 kbit DSL.
I think that what I would like to do is to install a Linux OS along side the Win ME and only go on line with the Linux program. Then I can still run a couple of programs that I cannot run with the Linux OS. I would kind of like to stay with Ubuntu since I have used it for a couple of years in a different computer and am use to it.

I want to be able to access my desktop from work so I first set up a DNS. I can ssh into my own computer and using the ip address but when I try to ssh using my DNS (this is from my home wireless which is Linksys E2000), I get the following error:
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
debug1: Connecting to ****.com [74.79.145.28] port 50000
debug1: Connection established.
debug1: identity file /home/andy/.ssh/id_rsa type -1
[Code].....
I set up the settings on the Linksys to accept DDNS but I am thinking there might be something else I overlooked? I do not understand completely what is happening to debug this. It seems like it initially accepts the connection and then something strange occurs.

Just to gain access to one of my computer across the house I use VNC a lot but the computer changes its IP address every so often that I refuse to just get up and check it. Without giving that computer a static IP address, is there a way to hunt down the computer's IP?

I had to leave rather suddenly (decision was Germany's, not fiancee's), and now am in the States again, but my files are still there. There are lots of things (mainly photos) on there, that I would like to have here. SOME stuff is on CD/DVD, but there is stuff that isn't.
Is there some way that I could access her computer and just copy files to mine?
(I picture two folders, one on hers, one on mine, and I just dragging an icon from one to the other - but I don't suppose anything's THAT easy...)
Naturally, her computer would have to be on, and I assume she could not be using it herself. Naturally also, I would get her permission first...
I assume that it would take a while, but if it were as simple as the icon thing I described above, then I could just go away and come back later. I assume something would be running to make sure that the destination file and source file were identical before proceeding to the next file.
[Before you suggest: why doesn't she just copy the files to DVD's and mail them to me? She is not all that computer saavy, I'm afraid, and trying to explain it all, including the exact folder names and such, Plus, how to use a DVD/CD burner and software... Plus translate it all into German... If I were rich enough, I could just go there and do what I needed, but that is not in the cards for the present. ]
IS there a way to copy stuff from her computer to mine?
