I installed Lucid on a new box and although it boots fine I get no boot menu. I just did a bunch of updates, including a new kernel, so I would expect that the older kernel would show up as well as the recovery option.I've rerun "update-grub" a few times but to no avail.
View 5 RepliesI installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

Have just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?
Is there a way to modify the grub.cfg file to stop this problem ( all posts say dont touch this file??Or install a script to delete the grubenv file on shutdown as a workaround for me, (I have no idea how to do this whatsoever, I'm not familiar with linux at all)I did read that this problem was fixed/patched in Grub version 2, but dosn't seem.so on my system afetr I updated it when I got into Ubuntu.I couldnt find the patch or fix, I got the information I am on about from this post:URL...It seems to say it was fixed or patched by Colin Watson reading through, but I don't really understand whats being said or how to get the patch on my system if indeed there is one?Sorry for being a bit thick about all this, its a bit beyond my brain now, hope somebody can help out as I have enjoyed my brief bit of fun in Ubuntu.
I am trying to streamline my boot screen/GRUB Menu. I know what I want it to look like (grub_wanted.jpg), and I think I know how to get it by uninstalling a couple of things, (synaptic.jpg). Now I have too many items on the screen, and it looks cluttered to me (grub.jpg).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu on my new desktop alongside Windows 7 (each OS is on a separate drive), I seem to have run into a small problem. Let me start with what I did:
- Unplugged 1TB drive from the PSU, BIOS was not seeing my formatted (and thus empty) 500GB drive and I couldn't put it into the boot order at all with the 1TB turned on.
- Loaded up the boot CD and was able to install Ubuntu 10.1 on my 500GB drive.
- Did a bit of configuring, shut my PC off and plugged my 1TB (with Windows 7) drive back in. I tried to see if I could now see my Ubuntu drive in BIOS but nothing is there - just the Windows drive is in the list of available drives to boot from (along with DVD-ROM and USB).
This is where I've run into my problem. What I want is to have a nice GRUB boot menu at the start like any other dual-boot system but just have the two operating systems on separate drives altogether.I did it this way because I was having issues with the advanced partition menu on the boot CD so just went ahead and followed the KISS method by unplugging the Windows drive.
I was told by a friend that if I put my Ubuntu drive into the first position in my boot order and the Windows drive in the second, then I could boot into Ubuntu and run a GRUB update command (he told me to google it) and that would create the necessary GRUB that had the entries for Windows 7 and Ubuntu.Both operating systems are 64-bit, I imagine that might make a difference in whatever help you guys can offer me. I love the hell out of both OS's and want to be able to use them interchangeably.
i am having a problem with my dual boot setup. I originally installed windows XP on a 100gb hard drive, from there i downloaded and burnt ubuntu off so i could install it on my 200gb hard drive. For a little bit i struggled to even get it to install because it wouldn't recognize my onboard nvidia graphics, i ended up having to get an alt boot disk and fix it with technique in this link:

Now after the bios boot, my screen shuts off for awhile and takes me directly to the login screen for ubuntu. No Grub, no windows boot options, nothing. I tried booting windows by choosing it from the bios boot menu but all it does is hang at prompt and doesn't boot at all. I tried the live cd fix and reinstalled grub but nothing changed. What i think is happening is that it boots the Grub menu but it doesn't display it because of graphical confrontations. It hangs for about 10 seconds, the grub default time, and then turns my monitor back on to display the Ubuntu login screen.

I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

I'm a noob but enjoying dual booting. However, every time I run update manager I get a new vmlinuz entry and now I have multiple boot options in my grub boot menu. Now when I have like 5 ubuntu entries to move past to select Windows. and the latest Ubuntu is always at the bottom so I have to annoyingly scroll down to select the latest there. I don't really understand what the vmlinuzXXX entries in the boot folder are for so I don't want to delete them. I've thought about editing the loop in the 10_linux file in the grub.d folder but it looks like its calling a function or macro or something:

Because its not finding the latest, its just finding all. How to I get back to one Ubunutu boot option like when I first installed?
I have 4 OS's on a publicly used pc. I want to hide the boot menu on GRUB2 and have it appear only when I press and hold the SHIFT key during boot. Will changing in /etc/default/grub GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT to 0 safely accomplish this goal? Also, what is the command for deleting all of the former kernel upgrades from the boot menu?
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter quite a bit of troubleshooting, I have only made my problems dual booting XP and Xubuntu go from bad to worse.
I installed xubuntu on my Windows XP laptop as a dual boot system. (Single 40gb Hard Disk, used xubuntu wizard to repartition XP)
After installation, Windows XP would not boot from the boot menu; it would just go to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner (xubuntu was fine).
So far, I have repair installed (not clean) Windows XP and used the Windows XP recovery console commands "fixboot" and "fixmbr" (fixmbr caused xubuntu to become unbootable with no boot menu) to no avail.
I have 2 HDD one of 1 TB and other of 250 GB on my Desktop, on my 250 HDD I installed Windows 7 and have tried creating a Dual boot but my System boots to Windows without giving me Booting options to Windows or Ubuntu, if I manually select the booting option by hitting the F8 Key shows me list of H/w to boot from, I select the 250 GB HDD and system now boots to Ubuntu, both OS works fine no issues but the glitch is why do I have to do this everytime when booting to Ubuntu.
I also tried clean installing Ubuntu after having removed the Windows 7 but the same problem, cannot boot unless the HDD is selected.
At the time of installation I also noticed that Ubuntu will not detect the Windows OS which was already there before installing Ubuntu, whereas I tried with the same disc on different laptop computer and it worked just fine, it detected windows 7 loader and gives the booting option.
I just want to know is it because of 2 HDD installed on my Desktop.
i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file
View 5 Replies View RelatedI currently have an Acer Aspire One D250 netbook with Windows 7 Starter Edition, and I've decided to load Ubuntu 9.10 on it.
I put Ubuntu on my JumpDrive using this , and then began following the instructions from here, and I got to the part where it wanted me to enter my Boot Menu by holding F2 to enter setup... but it sent me straight to a menu that only allowed me to boot from Windows 7 or to run a Windows Memory System Diagnostic. Advanced options by pressing F8 only allowed me to change how Windows 7 started, but no where in the setup does it allow me to enter the boot menu and tell it to boot from my jump drive.
I'm not sure if it's a limitation on my model, the OS, or if I'm am missing something obvious. I've beaten Google to death, but the only thing I have gotten from there are topics on people trying to boot from XP versus Windows 7 on a duel partitioned hard drive, or people who's laptops won't start up at all.
I also tried running the "Help Boot from CD" that came on the jumpdrive, but it said there was a system error and that it could not install properly.
I upgraded my Ubuntu to 10.4 and when I boot it stops for 24 seconds at the boot menu then loads. This is the same menu you get on boot when you press Esc. How do I get Ubuntu to boot normal?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having an odd dual-boot problem. Briefly, I can't boot Windows XP from its entry on the GRUB2 menu. If I set the disk order in BIOS so that the machine boots off the drive with Windows XP, XP starts normally. However, if I boot off the Ubuntu drive, which brings up the GRUB2 menu, choosing the "Windows 7 loader" option (why it says Windows 7 when there's only Windows XP is another question!) just makes my system reboot.
It appears there's some problem with the way GRUB2 attempts to start Windows XP. I'm also wondering why GRUB2 thinks it sees the Windows 7 loader. There shouldn't be any Windows 7 anything anywhere. I once had a Windows 7 RC install on the same disk as Windows XP, but I wiped the Windows 7 system partition and reallocated its space as just another NTFS partition. FWIW, GRUB2 is installed on the MBR of the disk containing my Ubuntu install. Windows XP has a different drive all to itself.
My girlfriend has installed Ubuntu, but does not find the menu.lst file in /boot/grub folder, even though she has run 'sudo update-grub'. When she types 'grub' however, she gets told that she does not have grub installed.

Then I installed Ubuntu on its partition and everything was as it should be. Then I did the Ubuntu updates and now my boot window looks like this ... I can click on any of the Ubuntu logins and it takes me to the same place.

I just installed the latest version of Ubuntu on my wifes computer, I got everything running and all is good. The only problem is that since it is my wifes computer, and she wants to use windows rather than linux, it is inconvenient for her to have to select Windows from the boot menu rather than me, on the occasion that I play with ubuntu, selected ubuntu.Is there a way that I can set windows as the default rather than Ubuntu?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a persistent installation of 10.10 on a USB thumb drive installed with the Universal USB Installer. When I boot, it always brings up the welcome screen, with the languages on the left side, the big "Try Ubuntu" button in the center, and an "Install Ubuntu" button on the right. I just want to run ubuntu from the USB stick. When I click on "Try Ubuntu" the system hangs for 2-3 minutes, requires a force-quit and then brings up the desktop.
If, at the beginning of the boot process, I interrupt it bringing up the initial menu, I can select "English" then "Run Ubuntu from this USB", and it boots very quickly directly to the desktop. Before this install I was running 9.04 and later 10.04 from the same USB stick and had no issue with it booting directly to the desktop. Ideally I'd like to not need to intervene and just have load to the desktop. Do I need to make some changes to grub?
I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition on a brand new Packard Bell Dot S2 netbook, and when the system rebooted after installation the netbook booted straight into Windows 7.
When I rebooted again and paid more attention to the boot process, there was no GRUB menu (like the one I get when booting up my desktop).
The Windows partition has been resized, but I can't seem to get to the new Ubuntu partition.
I have been running a dual boot 9.04/xp setup without major problems for nearly a year now.(just an unresolved kyocera printer problem)
I have had issues with windows and recently needed to reinstall windows. To do this I created a slipstreamed SP3 disk. I switched to boot priority to CD and ran a repair install from there, trouble was this gave me two installs of windows at the boot menu but ubuntu disappeared from the menu at this point.
I successfully ran the repair install again from the original windows install.
I then deleted the second windows installation.
Now it boots straight to windows without the boot menu at all.
The ubuntu partition is still there however.
I am using 10.04 and when I start my system I don't get any boot menu to choose from. I am the only user of this computer and don't have to log in on start up but I would think that the boot menu screen would show up so I could use the recovery tool or change kernel if I wanted to. I have two other computers, and that is the first think that shows up on the screen when I boot them on. I am sure there is an adjustment that need to be made but not sure what to change.
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust installed ubuntu 11.04 for the first time and it works fine except when i start the computer up the screen goes to the no signal adjust to 1600 x 900 screen. if i wait 30 seconds or so it boots into ubuntu or i can hit the down arrow 4 times and hit enter to load windows so grub must be running but isn't sending out a video signal or at a resolution the monitor can't display so does anyone know how to solve this?

I uninstalled through Windows and reinstalled Xubuntu 9.10 with Wubi with no apparent problems.When I look in C:ubuntudisks, root.disk, swap.disk, and the boot folder are both present. The C:ubuntudisksootgrub folder is empty; I don't know whether or not it should be that way.But when my computer starts, it just boots Windows Vista without displaying the menu asking me to select my OS.

And, I did read the guide on removing entries from grub 2. The problem is, some of the kernels in the current grub menu are no longer in synaptic on this install. Currently I have WinXP, Ubuntu 8.10, and Ubuntu 9.10 installed. I want to leave 8.10 installed, but not have it available in the Grub menu. How can this be accomplished? Grub 2 seems quite obtuse compared to earlier versions where there was a simple menu file
