Dec 23, 2010I just installed a very basic kde with the kde window manager. but the network applet does not autostart, neither does it connect when started from terminal.

Dec 5, 2009I use network manager applet 0.7.1. I had set the automatic wireless connection to my my wireless network (WPA key secured). Recently, I get the following problem: At the automatic connection, I get the message: Network manager applet (/usr/bin/mn-applet) needs default keyering. As I don't know what it is to type it and then, deny or OK, it doesn't get connected to my wireless network.

Oct 27, 2010I'm having a problem since my last upgrade from 11.2 to 11.3 (Gnome).
Before the upgrade NetworkManager would run just fine at start up, now I have to explicitly run the command from a console using the root user to start it.
(My problem is the same as this one, only in gnome instead of kde)

Jul 3, 2011For one of the users on my system, knetworkmanager abruptly ceases to autostart once on a while. This happens once in roughly 10-15 days. When that happens, i have to go into .kde4/share/config/networkmanagementrc and manually toggle Autostart=true (from false). This trick works for another 2 weeks or so, before the value of "Autostart" automagically changes to 'false' and i have change it again.I dont mind doing it manually, but the user in question is my mom, and she does not have the know-how to do it herself when i'm not around.

Oct 30, 2010I'm running Squeeze and I'm looking 3 days now for a solution in some weird problem. The NetworkManager Applet shows that there isn't connection although I am connected. The icon has this small "x" and when mouseover it says "No network conncection". Moreover when left clicking it, it says
"Wired Network Device not managed"
While I was looking for the solution a came across this post by an Ubuntu developer who says:network-manager-applet displays the connectivity state of network-manager's managed interfaces not every interface. So the title "network manager says disconnected but is connected and working" is actually misleading. The interface is connected and working but not from network-manager's point of view since it is not managing the interface. Additionally, in Lucid now network-manager applet displays nothing now for non-managed interfaces so is less misleading. You can check to see whether or not an interface is managed by network-manager by using the command line too nm-tool. You'll see "State: unmanaged" for unmanaged interfaces.
OpenSUSE Network :: Wireless Not Responding, Hardware / Unable To Enable It Through Network-manager Applet?
Apr 4, 2010I recently installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and everything works fine except wi-fi card, of course. The problem is that after installation the system recognized the card (is was listed in network devices in Yast) but I was unable to enable it through network-manager applet. Though the device could make scanning through terminal (found article in docs but didn't fully understand wpa_gui). Then i was stupid enough to delete the device from Yast list to try to reinstall it. So the problem is that i simply can't do this cause i see no way to re-detect. That is the goal is to at least turn back to post-install system state and try to enable wifi card again.

Jul 20, 2010Basically, I chose to give Ubuntu Studio another try (after it had annoyed me with it's lack of wifi), but the problem is that there's no network manager applet in the indicator area (i added it in the top right, the panel's set up as it would be in normal Ubuntu)Using Wifi Radar, i think that the wifi card works in the preempt kernel, it's just that i don't want to use Wifi Radar all the time, can prove to be annoying.
When i start nm-applet, a small space opens up in the indicator applet. I'm not sure if that's something important.Has someone managed to get this to work? (i've installed network-manager and network-manager-applet)

But I've encountered a quite annoying problem, as the only stable solution I've found for connecting to wireless applications is the applet used in the gnome panel. I've tried the Wicd Network Manager, but it keeps disconnecting without reason.
Is there another program for connecting wireless, or maybe a way to use applets without a panel/window navigator?

May 8, 2010I'm not sure if I have two seperate issues or one inter-related issue. The Network Manager applet wasn't appearing in the tray, found out it wasn't installed. Installed, still didn't appear. Tried installing WiCd, WiCd did appear but couldn't find any networks. I had installed restricted drivers previous, decided it was worth another look. Found that Broadcom STA Wireless Driver wasn't installed. Tried to install, it said it couldn't and said I should review the var/log/jockey which is....excessively long.

Aug 21, 2010Yesterday while trying (unsuccessfully) to get a new Bluetooth dongle set up I lost the network manager applet. When I rebooted, after giving up on Bluetooth in Ubuntu, I had no way of connecting to my wireless network. In command line (iwconfig & iwlist scan) I was able to see the wireless router. So the wireless card is working correctly. How do I reinstall the network manager applet? Oh even when use a wired connection to the router there is no connection.

Feb 1, 2011I've noticed an issue since the last 10.10 update with the network manager applet. When I first start gnome, the network manager works fine. However after some length of time or trigger that I don't fully understand yet, it ceases to function any more. None of the menu items respond. The issue does not seem to be with the actual networking system as I can connect to the internet, ssh, etc fine. I can restart the applet like so:

Ubuntu :: Sound Or Network Icon Missing From Indicator Applet?
Feb 10, 2011I have an annoying problem. It started with the network icon in the indicator applet in gnome-panel. It just disappeared! Somehow I managed to get my network icon back (perhaps after a restart), but as soon as it showed up, my sound icon disappeared.
I followed some advice I saw somewhere that said to add another indicator applet. When I did I had my network icon on my pre-existing indicator applet and a sound indicator in the new one, but no network icon. Because I needed the sound icon, I closed the original. But, I'm still stuck with no network icon now. This is pretty frustrating.

Feb 26, 2009I recently acquired an HP2133 netbook. It comes with SUSE 10 enterprise desktop pre-installed. WI-FI was working fine, though a slight pain for asking for the key every time. I thought I would apply all updates I could find and that may improve my networking.Having applied all I can find the wi-fi is now broken.If I use YaST I can see the Broadcom internal device seems to remain recognised, it even has the configuration I set for my wi-fi network access.The problem seems to be the NetManager applet, which denies all knowledge of wi-fi now and only has wired (which is working).Ironically the update causing the failure was applied wirelessly.I am slightly at a loss how best to proceed - I was going to cut my losses and make another boot partition with Ubuntu, but the live CD I made failed to run so that I could make a flash boot version, I shall have to return to that.
I have also now discovered that SUSE 10 is a bit long in the tooth - I sort of assumed it was current, given I bought the machine recently. So I'm wondering if it would be best to take the hit and reformat completely? I know it is broadcom, so should not be a problem, and I have been through ndiswrapper and the like in the past, though somehow I seem to have forgotten all about it now!I was happy enough with the SUSE setup and this is highly annoying as I was only updating to fix an annoyance and now the wifi has been broken... Perhaps there is an alternative applet to the netmanager that may play with the card and allow me to connect to networks?I look forward to recommendations, at this time my primary objective is to restore wifi functionality, longer term perhaps I need to review distro and installation, but I should like to do that on a dual boot basis I think

Jan 28, 2010On about 90% of bootups I find that network manager has disappeared from the notification area to be replaced by a random duplicate of one of the other icons (at random). If I remove the notification area and add it again all is fine.

May 1, 2010I was running Ubuntu 9.10 on my HP G70 laptop and did an upgrade using upgrade manager to Ubuntu 10.04.
Since I haven't been able to get wifi connection or wired working. The Network Manager applet is missing from the notification area and if I try to run nm-applet manually it says it is already running. I tried killing the process and then running it manually in the terminal and although the process appears to be running it is missing from the panel.
Booting into the live cd has the applet working fine so something in the upgrade process must have failed.
I tried changing the theme to see if it displays in other themes but had no luck.
I also tried to log into kde but kde seems to be broken. When I log into it after the splash screen all I get is a black screen with only my mouse pointer.

May 11, 2010My family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.
A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.
Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.
Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?

Jun 25, 2010Accidentally I removed the NM Applet from the panel and I am trying to reset it. When I right-click on the panel and "Add to Panel", I couldn't see Network Manager. Hence I couldn't connect to the available wireless network. I am able to add Network Monitor, which is similar to Network manager, but this just displays info about current network.
