Debian Configuration :: Squeeze Install - Nvidia Fan Constant?

Mar 5, 2011

I installed Debian Squeeze (choosing no when prompted to add support for non-free or contrib sources) and noticed that the fan of my Nvidia 9600 GT video card is constantly running at full speed. I thought this meant that the default driver is not properly working. I would like to configure my system so that the video card fan is not being pushed so hard.

I downloaded the latest Nvidia (propietary) driver, stopped gdm3, and ran the driver installer. The installer failed because it said the Nouveau kernel driver was currently in use and incompatible with the Nvidia driver. I chose not to allow the installer to update my modprobe configuration directory. nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'

[Code]...

It looks at though the xorg.conf.new file has the nv driver in use, but the Nvidia installer says the Nouveau driver is being used. I ran a line in terminal (i forget the exact line) to test the xorg.conf.new file in the /root/ directory. The result was No Screens Found.

Next, I tried to remove the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package using aptitude, but it displayed a message indicating that xserver-xorg-video-all depends on it. I decided not to remove the xserver-xorg-nouveau package. Any suggestions on how to proceed in order to configure X with a free driver (nv, vesa, or nouveau) so that the video card is handled properly?

Ubuntu :: Laptop High Heat And Constant Running?

May 2, 2010

Just put a fresh clean copy of Lucid on the laptop. I have noticed this for a while on the otherr versions and distros also, and finally started looking at. My laptop runs, contantly.The fan seems to be always running. I don't have more the a couple of applications at time, I don't use it for work, so nothing extensive. Web browsing, music, email, photos. End user stuff. So I added a heat application in the panel just to see what was happening. I can get the temp down to around 150F-ish if I am not even looking at the laptop. But, open anything and start workingand I am sitting arround 183F-185F. Is this normal? I am just getting toired of having such a hot laptop on my lap, I even have a pad under it so the air can circulate witht the fan, but, a constant running fan is what I have and the heat can be felt through the pad if I am sitting for a couple of hours.

Sometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.

Ubuntu :: Constant Error On DVD-DL Burn?

Sep 3, 2010

I'm on 10.04. 64bit (but dont think this is 64bit related)

I have been getting this very annoying error while trying to burn DVD-DL media from an iso using growisofs. Here is the command I used (to burn a backup copy of an xbox360 game)

Code:
growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dao -use-the-force-luke=break:1913760 -dvd-compat -speed=2.4 -Z /dev/scd0=nameofmyiso.iso
Now, every single time, usually around 50%, I get this error:

:-[ WRITE@LBA=aacf0h failed with SK=3h/WRITE ERROR]: Input/output error
write failed: Input/output error

I've been searching around and found threads with people complaining about this error since 2005, but not a single one of them presented any solution (some hint to a kernel issue, which I'd have no idea how to fix. I'm a noob at linux).

I also tried burning it using imgburn under wine, same error, also at 50%.

This is very frustrating, Ive burned around 6 coasters so far and DVD-DL are expensive to keep on this trial and error.

p.s It's not faulty media before anyone asks. I tried it on Mac and it worked fine. Also, this drive worked well before, before I migrated this machine.

Ubuntu :: Computer No Longer Boots Constant Error

Dec 14, 2010

I have tried to keep away from posting this seeing how many have had the same problem but this is getting to the point of me just selling my computer out of shear frustration. Ive got Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04lts. For a while they all ran fine together till my Windows drive gave out and ever since I tried to remove the drive GRUB recovery has been popping up. I even tried to put the drive back in and the computer still wont boot anything. Ive got 4 different live boots and neither one works, Ive tried to boot with my internal dvd drive and a usb one, there is always a Grub error. When I put in the ls command and find my only non"unknown filesystem" it still says "bad filename". I guess where im getting at is grub wont even let me reformat my computer or boot from anything without saying "no such device: 32d98-e0b3-451b-809b-ae6562ccb701"

Programming :: POSIX__Philosophers At Dinner: Error: Initializer Element Is Not Constant

Jun 23, 2010

I changed my post because I found that solution, and didn't want to bother for that. But, since I didnt find a way to delete the post, I thought of updating it: I am beginning to write the code for the philosophers problem. As you know, they can eat, think or wait for forks. When they have 2 forks, one by each side, they eat. Then they set the 2 forks as available, and think.

Each philosopher is a thread. My problem is that it gives segmentation fault, somehow, when I try to initialize. The thing I really don't understand, is why it sometimes gives segmentation fault on initialization #0!!! (But generally on initialization #1) I have set 5 initializations in total, defined by N, that is also the number of threads I'm working on.

PHP Code: #include<stdio.h>
#include<stdlib.h>
#include<unistd.h>
#include<pthread.h>
#include<errno.h>
#include <time.h>
#define N 5

Debian Configuration :: Running A Local Ftp Server?

Nov 2, 2010

What would be necessary to run an ftp server (or a web server) on my local PC so that other people I know could access it and download stuff from it? The idea is to share photos, videos etc with friends/family where the files are a bit too big for email. (All 100% legal, own-content, no copyright issues, needless to say). Security isn't that vital, I'd just put files in the ftp directory, email the link and let them download the files, then remove them again. No passwords are required, and no uploads.

Obviously there's the problem that both computers have to be on at the same time, and I assume I'd have to change my computer's firewall settings and my router's settings to allow the traffic through, but my question is more basic than that - is it even possible? My internet connection is through a router, and as I understand it, my router has the IP address, not my computer. So I can connect through my router using my computer's IP address, but only my router knows my computer's IP address, and all the rest of the internet just sees my router and its IP address. Which means (I think) that I can't just send my IP address for my family to connect to, because that only gets them as far as my router, and the router would have no idea what to do with such requests. Am I right so far?

So is there any way for my family's computers to contact an FTP server or a web server running on my computer? Or does it require some kind of intermediary server to act as a traffic-forwarder? Is there such a thing? I'm assuming that setting up little private torrents would be fiddly and inefficient. Or would it be better/simpler to use one of the free filesharing services and put up with the (sometimes not too family-friendly) adverts associated with them?

Debian Configuration :: INIT Not Running A Script?

Mar 23, 2011

I have a firewall script setup to run in rc2.d. There is a K99 for it and then an S99. The problem however, is that it isn't being called. No errors, no logs, nothing. The symlinks in /etc/rc2.d point to /etc/init.d/script, but nothing ever happens on boot or shutdown. I can manually do /etc/init.d/script start and it will start just fine, including printing a line that it is starting. What's going on here? The permissions are the same as the other scripts in the init directory, so I doubt that is a problem.

Debian Configuration :: Error Starting Domain: Internal Error Process Exited While Reading Console Log Output

I have mounted an NFS share with ISO images on my kvm Server. If i connect such a iso to a VM (using virt-manager) for installing a operating system i get the following error on startup: Error starting domain: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 qemu: could not open disk image /mnt/iso/public/Linux/Distributions/Debian/debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso: Permission denied

The problem is definitly that kvm (or qemu or libvirt-bin, i don't know) tries to set permissions (rwx owner for libvirt-qemu, --- for kvm group, --- for other) on the file, although it has read permissions. Is it possible to change this behavior?

Debian Configuration :: Shorewall (Shoreline?) Firewall Up And Running, But It's Logging To /var/log/messages?

I've got a Shorewall (Shoreline?) firewall up and running, but it's logging to /var/log/messages. I'd much rather have it logging to another location e.g. /var/log/firewall but can't find (a clear enough) explanation on how to do this. Apparently, it varies greatly depending on the distro, the kernel, and the version of Shorewall that is running. You'd think it would be something as simple as setting a path in a config file, but apparently not. I'm running a stock Lenny kernel on the firewall machine. It comes with version 4.0.15 of Shorewall.

Debian Multimedia :: Constant Crackling Sound After Upgraded To 8.1

Aug 31, 2015

I have upgraded (twice) to 8.1 and I get constant crackling sound - interestingly only from my left speaker. It starts already after the GRUB boot, and when logged in it just cracks all the time.

- in Wheezy there is no this kind of problem
- I have installed Jessie (crackling), fresh install back to Wheezy (no problem), fresh install again Jessie (problem), back to Wheezy (no problem), and now Jessie (again problem).
- the volume slide is jumping like crazy together with crackling. There is no chance to manually change it.

I have managed (by some unknown chance) to set profile to off, and now it disappeared. However, it comes back ON when rebooted.
