Ubuntu :: Move Swap From Pendrive To HDD?

May 30, 2011

Just moved/reinstalled my HTPC setup (XBMC Live + extras) to a 8GB USB pendrive to simplify future reinstalls and upgrades. Everything works fine so far and I've not had any issues setting up everything for my needs. The system is very responsive in use in XBMC (and other) but slow down quite a bit occasionally when doing to much at the same time.

Since a USB pendrive have its limitations, a concern I have is regarding the swap partition that is currently on the pendrive. Should I move the swap to a swap partition on my HDD to ease the stress on the pendrive; and could I expect any gain in performance? I have 2GB of RAM.

Ubuntu :: How To Move The Swap Location

Apr 28, 2011

can you move your swap to a new location after a install and if it is possible will it give any kind of performance boost if it is moved to a separate hard drive? I did this on my XP machine and it made a pretty big difference in over all speed of the machine and wanted to try this on my Ubuntu machine, assuming it will even make and difference in performances.

OpenSUSE Install :: Move Swap File To A 8GB SD Card?

May 24, 2010

I just got a new laptop and installed 11.1, and I want to move my swap file to a 8GB SD card I have. It seems to run very fast, so it will improve swapping speed. I created a swapfile with Partitioner, and I can delete the existing swapfile with GParted during a reboot - but I'm afraid I will make my system unbootable by doing that - don't I need to first tell OpenSuSE what swapfile (on the new sdb) to use? I'm pretty sure it will detect the new swapfile automatically during boot, but it might choke on a missing (old) swapfile.

CentOS 5 :: Need To Move Space From Root File System To Swap

Apr 7, 2009

I currently have a server with the default VolGroup00 that contains logical volumes for the root file system and swap using logical volumes LogVol00 (root) and LogVol01 (swap.) I need to take space from LogVol00 and move it to LogVol01. I have found documentation for increasing the swap, and the resizing the logical volumes. However in the documentation and the man pages it says that I have to reduce the size of teh file system on the logical volume I am going to shrink. I have found documentation resizing the logical volumes but not the file systems.

General :: Move And Utilize Root /boot And Swap Dir To Temporary Location?

Oct 16, 2009

I'll start by explaining what my system layout currently is. I have Fedora 11 X64 installed on my system, it is an HP Dv9380ca laptop. My system has 2 hdd /dev/sda /dev/sdb. During the setup i set my home directory to reside on /dev/sdb. After booting i realized that my root and swap partition are part of a volume group name vg_sharpfed and are set in fstab as:

/dev/mapper/vg_sharpyfed-lv_root / ext4 defaults 1 1
/dev/mapper/vg_sharpyfed-lv_swap swap swap defaults 0 0

Output of Fdisk -l /dev/sda

Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x1aecda8d

[code]....

My /dev/sda2 partitions is 100gigs and set as an LVM. Essentially what i am getting at is, if it's possible to temporarily copy / /boot and swap to my second partition, edit grub if needed and fstab to mount to the temp locations, format sda to ext4 create partitions for / /boot and swap partitions, then copy back the original directories edit required fstab to mount the original locations and no longer have them contained in a Logical volume.

Ubuntu :: Swap Or Swap File On Flash Memory?

Aug 16, 2010

RAM for older machines like I use is fairly cheap these days. But flash memory is just as cheap or cheaper. So I'd like to ask about the feasibility of expanding my system's memory using flash memory. And about whether creating a partition for swap on the flash memory, or whether a swap file on the flash device, is the better way to go.

By flash memory I have in mind mainly USB sticks or what are sometimes called "pen drives." But I do also have CF and SD cards that, with the proper cheap adapter (one of which I already own for adapting CF) could be used to create extra swap space. So, what is the current consensus on the feasibility/advisability of using flash memory for swap? I've read about the limited write cycles of flash being an argument against using it for swap. But recent reading indicates to me that the limited write cycles problem applies mostly to older, smaller-capacity flash memory. Some will come out and say that, for larger-capacity flash memory, the life of the device is likely to exceed the amount of time your current computer will be useful (I think I've seen estimates in the range of 3-4 years life--minimum--for newer, higher-capacity flash memory).

A more persuasive argument I've heard against using flash memory for swap is that access times for these devices can be much slower than SATA, and maybe even IDE, hard drives. That would certainly dictate against using flash memory for swap.

So, how about some input on this issue? Anyone using flash memory for swap? If so, what kind (e.g., usb stick or SD/CF)? Are you using a swap file or a swap partition? How's system performance? Likewise, has anyone had flash-memory-used-as-swap die on them? The consequences would undoubtedly be dire. Also, has anyone measured flash memory access times to confirm or refute claims about slow access times? Are some types of flash memory better/worse than others in terms of access times?

Ubuntu :: Panel Applet - If Right-click Doesn't Include Move - How To Move That Icon

For Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / Gnome 2.30.2.

I have two applets on my Gnome panel -- NetworkManager Applet 0.8, and Klipper (it works better than Glipper) -- that I want to move.

HOWEVER, right-clicking the panel icons does not enable me to move these applets, as follows:

- NetworkManager Applet 0.8 does not include a Move item in its list of options.

- Klipper displays a long list of Klipper options but no Move option.

How I can move these items to new locations on the Gnome panel?

Ubuntu :: Bios Reset After Use Of Pendrive?

Dec 6, 2010

I used to have Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my old IBM Thinkpad R40e. I upgraded to 9.04 LTS and seem to have updated to the 10.04 LTS kernel - didn't know about that until now.

Recently I created an Ubuntu 10.10 Persistence Pendrive. I tried to readjust the booting sequence in order to boot from my USB stick Ubuntu 10.10. It somehow failed. - actually I know what to do in a BIOS

My computer still only boots via the harddisk - it does not boot via the Ubuntu-Pendrive nor does it boot if I insert an Ubuntu 10.10 CD. Further I cannot access my BIOS.

Is there any possibility to reset my BIOS manually - I know that some Dell computers have such an option? Any other way to update to Ubuntu 10.10.

Ubuntu Installation :: USB Pendrive Out Of Space?

May 28, 2011

While installing Ubuntu from USB (made with usb-creator), I began getting errors such as 'ubi-timezone has failed with exit code 1', with a retry / continue / cancel option, finally getting 'Installer has failed with exit code 1'

Now when I try to run Ubuntu directly from the USB key, it won't start properly, giving errors about zero drive space.

I'm now unable to continue the installation or even use Ubuntu from the USB!

How I can fix this? At least, how can I remove whatever has filled up the USB so I can run from it?

Is it possible to install of load the ubuntu 9.10 version on a external HD. I found some stuff about

- using another USB stick with the live version and install from that USB to the external HD.
- using the live cd to install. But I don't have a CD drive on the machine.

Ubuntu :: No Write Permission On Pendrive After Automount

Aug 14, 2011

cat /etc/fstab
mount
ps -A
ls -al /media/
dmesg
groupsfootnotes

My problem:
When plugging in a pen drive it will be automounted, but only root (who owns it) has write access to it. Other users only have write access. (Neither my user, nor an unmodified test user)

My aim:
I want to be able to write on my pendrive without any additional manual work after plugging it in (iirc that is default on a standard ubuntu install).

Possible causes:
I once had a time where I wanted everthing to be minimal. Might be, that I removed something in connection with my problem. I reinstalled everything that came to my mind and could be connected to that problem w/o success. I merely removed stuff than editing stuff (never touched /etc/fstab or /etc/udev/rules.d/*). S
So I think I am missing some kind of service, that manages my (user?) permissions or so.

I use:
Ubuntu 10.04 (initially a kubuntu but I remove nearly everything Qt/KDE stuff) fluxbox (but most gnome services are active).

I tried/checked:
check my automount setting[1] - did not change the behaviour
media_automount - is checked
media_automount_open - is checked
usbmount - is installedntfs-config - did not help (even after reboot)
manual mount[2] - worked, but i don't want to do that everytime I plug in a pendrive
gksudo users-admin (made sure that amongs others the following entries are checked)
Access external storage devices automatically
Administer the system
Mount user-space filesystems (FUSE)

I didn't try:
chmod - seems to be only used for ext* fs
edit /etc/fstab - seems not to be supposed for such variable things like pendrives
- changing file systems for same pendrive
- different number of pen drives
- every pendrive needs its own fstab entry
udev rules - I was told to write some, but I am reluctant because- I never did that before (so I also didn't mess them up)

Additional info:
Code:
benedict@box:~$ cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).....

Ubuntu :: Install Kubuntu Live Onto A Pendrive?

Nov 17, 2010

I've recently been trying to install Kubuntu Live onto a pendrive but I'm having some problems. Situation is as so:- Installed Kubuntu 10.10 desktop to 4Gb pendrive via Universal installer 1.8.1.2, with 2Gb allocated persistence.

- Reboot PC, boot from USB into Kubuntu, no problems.
- Configure WiFi connection.
- Reboot.
- Error: NTLDR is missing

I've tried this several times, always with the same result. As soon as I reboot, boot loader appears to be missing. I've read here:[URL].. that there are problems with syslinux and Ubuntu's version and wondered if this was the problem, but plenty of people appear to be running with this setup.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be the problem (and apologies if this has already been asked, I'm struggling to find anything pertinent.) For info, the pendrive I'm using has a small partition that acts as a floppy drive, could this have any influence?
