I had my home folder on it's own partition, and I decided to do a clean install of 11.04. when I put the disk, when I went to configure the partitions, I I re-formatted the / partition, and I selected my home partition as my new home partition and I made sure the format was NOT selected. after everything got done getting installed and rebooted. 11.04 just creates a new home directory and does not use the whole home partition.
I still have my data saved on it, when I go to the disk utility it shows the same amount of used space before I did a re-installed. If I go to the files system and click on home it shows my user from the last install and it shows the user from the new install. when I click on the user from last install it shows 2 files: Access-Your-Private-Data.desktop
and: README.txt
get my home partition mounted for my home folder
also when I set up the new install I used the same password for access for the ring keys and for login
I'm looking for a central location on my network of 1 Karmic and 3 XP Pros for my Documents, Videos, Music etc.
I have an empty 1TB drive in my Karmic box currently formatted as one NTFS partition and I was thinking of mounting that drive in the Karmic /home folder.
Will Karmic be all right using an NTFS partition as the /home folder?
I have Ubuntu Server installed in one machine and ubuntu desktop in 3 more machines. What I would like to have is, authenticate the clients using a central user DB and also the home folder for a user should be available in any client machine in which he logs. I see that openLDAP takes care of authenticating clients but what application to use to mount the user's home folder from the server to the client machine on logging.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter buying an IBM/Lenovo USB fingerprint reader model FP06 and installing Fingerprint GUI, have problems to mount my home folder encrypted with eCyptfs. I was using it since the first time i install Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits. After login from GDM, there are some ways to make it work:
1) open a terminal window and type ecryptfs-mount-private. This decrypt the home folder, but need to logout and login again to my personal preferences can be reached (bookmarks in nautilus, in firefox, etc). Each time the PC is rebooted, the same process is needed to made again.
2) before login in GDM, change to a tty1 terminal (ctrl-alt-F1) and login from here. The personal folder decrypt then without problems. Then change to GDM (ctrl-alt-F, login an everything works fine. What could be the fault from GDM to not mount the encrypted folder?
I installed a second HD, and formatted it to ext4. I gave it the "/backup" label. I am trying to figure out how to mount it so that I can run cron to backup my home folder onto it once a week. This is what the fstab looks like now

i somehow managed to corrupt ubuntu 10.10 installed on my laptop and subsequently, i loaded a fresh version of ubuntu 10.10 on another partition. i want to access the data in the home folder of the other (previous) partition, but sudo nautilus gives me root privileges only in the current "filesystem" and not on the home folder of the other partition.
although i've been using ubuntu for some time now, but i am largely ignorant about most of the terminal commands.
This is the command I tried using:Code:mount -t cifs //NAS1/reports /home/user/public_html/reports -o rw,umask=0338,uid=587,gid=584,username=admin,password=passwordIt looks like the user can't access the files on the NAS drive. Is there any way to do this?
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe solution may to my problem may exist elsewhere, but I had trouble searching/finding it.I just bought a new external drive. The drive is formatted as ext4. I use it mainly in esata mode. Whenever I connect it, it mounts to /media/[UUID], where "[UUID]" is the UUID of the drive. I want it to be located at /media/backup when it is inserted, not in relation the UUID. I have tried putting a new line in my fstab (mount by UUID to folder) to mount the drive. It mounts correctly if the drive is connected to the computer and turned on during startup, but if the drive is off/not connected during startup Ubuntu barks at me. (I press 's' to skip mounting the drive) Is there a way to make external/removable drives mount to a certain location other than /media/[UUID] when they are inserted? I want the drive to mount to the folder while the computer is running, not only during startup.

I have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?

I have Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 updated to 9.10 and have downloaded Remaster from Remastersys. I followed all of the instructions, which were simple enough. However, there must be some instructions missing as the process failed. Working with Remaster through Synaptic Manager, the iso was downloaded into my "home" folder into its own Remaster folder. It was not the iso, like you get when downloading a distro from the Internet, which downloads just an iso onto the Desktop. Inside the folder were a bunch of empty files (I know, because I opened them) and an iso . At this point the Remaster instruction stop. They do not say what to do with the other files, or what they have to do with the iso of my Ubuntu layout. So, like any other iso (once I knew which one was the iso of my setup), I double clicked on it and it ran me through the process of accessing the DVD to burn it. Which I did. I tested it and it failed with some kind of message to the effect that certain files were missing or it could not read it. So, I thought, I would have to do the 'hunt and peck' method and experiment a few times like I did with the ordinary distro downloads until I get it right. But first, I would have to dump the Remaster folder in the "home" folder since it took up so much space on my hard drive. Wrong! I come to find out it is in something called "root" and that I do not have permission to do anything with it but "copy" it. Great. Just great! Now what do I do. I tried to change permissions, but was not allowed to do that either. The only thing I could think of - and dread - was the idea of having to wipe my hard drive and go through the whole reinstall procedures, which takes me days, just because Remaster has locked itself into my system - and there is no 'back door' to get out of it.

I hunted down my files from Windows that I need for school (old papers, research, etc.) and found it under "file system" --> "host" --> "users" --> "zbollman". I can access all of my files and I'm happy now that I don't have to boot between the two constantly to get what I need. However, I tried to copy the file to my home folder, but it said I do not have enough room. I'm about 5GB short. How do I go about allocating more space so that I can copy this folder so that all of my information is easily accessible?

In the linux machine we need to mount a folder names sever under apps folder with the user as steve. Also the steve user should have the permission to create the files in the folder. As of now, its mounted as root user.steve is in list of sudo users.

Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.

View 7 Replies View RelatedHaving been converted to using "Linux" about 8 months ago, and gaining confidence to try different distros, and figuring out how to 'keep' my Home folder, I've had great fun trying them out and learning as I go. The latest distro I'm trying is Kubuntu, which I really like and will keep for a while. However, when I was partitioning in the set-up, I omitted to create my home folder. Instead I now have is a partition the size of my "old" home folder, and to which I have to sign into to gain access. The files are all there so that is no problem.
1. What i would like to know is if this set-up is OK, or should I change it so that it is actually in the home folder (if so how?( a re-install?))
2. If I should decide to try out another distro in the future will this be safe to change to "home"?.

I have two external USB drives, that I need to mount at boot. I have been using /etc/fstab up until now, with the following entries:

However, as I gather from doing searches is quite common, occasionally I get an error during boot (causing the system to drop to a recovery shell) because the USB drives take time to wake up and the system hasn't found them by the time it reads /etc/fstab.
From doing searches, it seems there is nothing you can do to fstab to fix this, so you need to mount them using an rc.local script instead, using:

The problem is, as I have two USB drives, their /dev/sdxx location changes between boots. I thus want to use UUID codes as I do in fstab, however I haven't found anything about this.
Does anyone know how I can use the mount command and UUID to mount a drive in rc.local and what options I have to use the mount the drive with the same options that I am using in my fstab entry? Obvisouly, I can't refer back to fstab using the mount command, because then I will still get the boot error issue if they are listed in fstab. And there is no space internally for the USB drives as there is already two internal drives.
I have 2 internal drives. One is for the OS and one is for the Data. I tried to get the Data drive to mount automatically at login using some crap I found on a linux blog. Safe to say it didn't work and now I can't mount it with the OS on the OS Drive.
It mounts from a live CD and all the data is perfectly safe. I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. How do I configure my Debian installation to mount external USB drives to mount points based on the volume names of the drives? For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).
