Just noticed that when I plug my USB stick Slackware mount the drive to /media/?______?É?/
what the h**! is that name? Where it could potentially come from? How do I change that?
At this moment, the stick is mounted and lsusb says:

I just removed ubuntu and installed kubuntu, just for something different. i had my home and / folders partitioned separately for ease of upgrade, now during the update process i forgot to make sure the home directory would mount the right partition. for fear of loosing data, so my question is, is there any way of changing the mount point of the drive one the OS is installed.

I use it mainly in esata mode. Whenever I connect it, it mounts to /media/[UUID], where "[UUID]" is the UUID of the drive. I want it to be located at /media/backup when it is inserted, not in relation the UUID. I have tried putting a new line in my fstab (mount by UUID to folder) to mount the drive. It mounts correctly if the drive is connected to the computer and turned on during startup, but if the drive is off/not connected during startup Ubuntu barks at me. (I press 's' to skip mounting the drive) Is there a way to make external/removable drives mount to a certain location other than /media/[UUID] when they are inserted? I want the drive to mount to the folder while the computer is running, not only during startup.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two computers (one at work, one laptop) that I use daily. Both are running Ubuntu 10.04. I frequently use a usb stick to transfer files from one to the other. Somehow, every time I do this, all files get turned into executables (as if I did a chmod a+x on them...)
This happens every time I use the usb stick. I've reformatted the stick, but still this problem persists... anyone have any ideas on what is going on? It is really getting annoying to have to zip up folders so this doesn't happen...
In the linux machine we need to mount a folder names sever under apps folder with the user as steve. Also the steve user should have the permission to create the files in the folder. As of now, its mounted as root user.steve is in list of sudo users.

I just got my Gnome-flavored Squeeze running this morning, and I'm still working out the configuration. I have disabled automounting and autobrowsing of removable media, but anyway this problem was occuring when I had automounting enabled. I have the OS installed to a 4-GB microSDHC card plugged in to the front of the computer. The computer is a Toshiba Mini NB505.
edit: And now, I just plugged the flash8p1 into a different USB port, and it mounted from the places menu. I wonder, though, if this is related to the fact that I had first mounted it from the command line.
I've got a problem with my usb stick, I work on Fedora 13 at the moment the usb is ex3, I tried even ex4 but Fedora doesn't even recognize the usb.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm unable to mount external drives in thunar. Pcmanfm works fine. Ive tried a 2gb usb stick and a sd card reader. both give the same error. I used to be able to mount drives with thunar. What happened? I'm using ubuntu 9.10, installed lxde on top of server edition. Thunar is 1.0.1 , from the repos. Here is the output from the usb stick:

My 16gb usb memory stick now fails to mount. The device can be seen in gparted but partition is shown as unknown. Tried to format but error message popped up "failed". The device is shown in dmesg see below. I had tried to use the device to create a bootable usb but this did not work and the problems happen there after.

My usb stick continually automounts at /dev/sda10, and for a certain operation I'm trying to do I need it to be mounted at /dev/sda (or sdb, sdv, etc); is there any way to change it's mount directory?
As a bonus question, or rather the real question, what I'm really trying to do is format a bootstrap partition as shown here

I'd like to be able to manually mount a USB stick in console (before X is started) and I can't seem to find a good way to do that. I'm not too smart about HAL and UDEV and I don't want to undo the auto mount feature when X is running but still be able to manually mount and unmount as necessary; like for installing patches and packages after an install or version upgrade. It seems like there should be an entry in /etc/fstab and a directory in /mnt or /media but danged if I can find something that points the way.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm not familiar with Linux and I do not understand technical wording at all. I was given this laptop as a favour and it is an ex-work Dell Latitude. I was given this to help me as a replacement when my Compaq working with Windows Vista stopped working. I do not understand the way Linux works much. I managed to upload photos before from my Ericsson K850i to my memory stick but this time when I tried it kept telling me that the path was invalid and such things which I did not understand. I created a folder for 2011 photos ready to go next year but the mouse pad is hard to control and even though I did nothing the 2010 folder went into the 2011. Sorry if I am not being very clear.
All I want to know is where did my whole years worth of digital photos go from my memory stick as I didn't delete anything. Would someone please help me understand all the different extensions or tell me what I need to do to try and retrieve them. I would be so grateful. I was nearly crying when it happened as when you right click in Linux there is no Undo/Redo button.

Due to a bug that will be fixed at squeeze (I'm running lennyx64), I can't mount ntfs partitions from gui interface (or else, directories with non-English characters will be ignored).
So I'm mounting with disk-manager (hd partitions only), or from konsole. Obviously, mounting from konsole, is the only option for usb flash sticks.
Suddenly, just out of the blue, today debian stopped mounting ntfs partitions from konsole. Since this was my only option for mounting safely my friend's sticks, I have a big problem right now.

then when i try to do anything the menus dissappear. i since redid what i done and it works
I've compiled my own code as root (long story why) anyway I now need to switch this to a normal user to compile. So I did a simple copy/paste (using gnome/debian lenny) to my home/user. I then logged in as used to see the folders with a padlock and permissions for root only. So I logged back in as root, change permissions to the used, check they were all ok, logged back in as user, and it still says owner root, even thought when I log in as root it shows user as owner.

I have a few generic USB sticks lying around, and a few more SD/microSD chips that I use with openSUSE. Is there any way to label/ID them so they mount at unique points in /media, so I don't blast one accidentally? In mkfs.vfat there is a "-n volume-name" that looks promising, but I can't find a way to set that after the mkfs.
