When ever I log on to Ubuntu 10.10 I have to enter my password twice (three times if there's a time lag and the screensaver kicks in). This is very annoying, I didn't need to do that with previous versions

In 99% of the cases I use "Peter" and have explicitely to click on Peter. Only then the password entry field appears and I can enter it.
This is somehow user unfriendly. Can I define somehow a default user (here: Peter) and show immediately the password entry field (and place the cursor inside)?
i'm trying to set up password-less SSH login between multiple instances on my server. My goal is to be able to monitor all instances, whether I created them or not, with Zenoss.
Current setup: 3 machines
A: Zenoss host- owned by me, Access via putty with my keypair
B: instance- owned by me, access via putty with my keypair
C: instance- owned by teammate, access via putty with their keypair
I'm able to set up password-less SSH login between the instances I have created (A to B), however, I cannot between my Zenoss monitoring instance and any instances not created by me(A to C). Whenever I try to copy the id_rsa.pub file to these instances, I keep getting a Permission denied(public key) error. I believe the problem is that I have log in to my instances using my keypair but must use the the other instances creator's keypair to access their instances.
I use to ssh to different machines in my office. Every time it asks me for password. How do i prevent ssh from asking password every time or is there any way of exporting password every time i login to different machine.?

I've Installed Ubuntu 10.04 with and encrypted LVM password and it went on ok. When booting up the computer it comes to the screen where you enter your password to unlock the LVM which looks great.However after installing the NVidia graphics driver for the laptop and rebooting, the LVM password entry screen seems to be too big to fit on the screen, not looking very good....

Question: Installation had me entering my password many times, seemed like for most everything I did during install & setting up the desktops. It was a little frustrating compared to what I was used to with Ubuntu. I know this frequency will reduce once settled in although Linux and "fiddling" go together so some will continue. When using Ubuntu I was able to set that up to bypass some password need, not all. I was hoping there are options for that with Debian but my efforts all day yesterday failed to find any. I am not looking to eliminate password use entirely and I don't expect it to be just like Ubuntu either, however...
My main areas of frequent password use that are new to me with Debian Squeeze are:
1)All partition mounting. Using Ubuntu I edited fstab using a tool called "Storage Device Manager" so that only myself, not "users", had full read-write access to all partitions at boot time. However, none of those fstab codes or any new ones that I tried seemed to work in Squeeze. Besides Squeeze, I have two ntfs and one ext3 partition to access. Example: my music files are on an ntfs partition and I have to enter a password to listen to music.
2)Opening a root nautilus folder. In Ubuntu I made a custom application launcher with "gksu nautilus" and that gives you a no-password one-click access. In Squeeze, I enter a password every time.
3)Reboot & Shutdown. This one surprised me. Every reboot or shutdown requires my password unless I logout first but that adds a step. It may have something to do with a second desktop I installed (kde), I'm not sure. I tried making a script linked to an application launcher that runs "init 0" but that asked for my password too.
I'd like to be able to do 1,2 & 3 above without password entry other than maybe at the main log-in.
About me: This is my first post here, and am trying to be courteous. I checked the DebWiki, Google & this forum for answers. I found a little about ntfs partitions and saved it to a file. My situation is a Debian beginner but using Ubuntu for 7 or 8 months. My technical skills are mid-range. I use Debian on a newer dell laptop with Intel chipset and Intel CPU, triple booting Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10 and Debian-Sqeeze-di-rc1-amd64. I installed using DVD #1, and made a local repository with DVD 1&2 and added a second kde desktop. Gnome Debian is my favorite now, it runs very well and will probably replace Ubuntu as my primary OS. Everything works that I can tell, except the Software Sources GUI does not load but I go into the source.list file and edit it manually.
I have F10 installed on my laptop with disk encryption enabled. When I boot the machine I get a "Password:" request on screen but can't start typing for 30 seconds or more.Presumably the OS is not ready. This means I have to wait at the keyboard tapping a key until I see asterix. It's a waste of time and frankly a bit clunky for a modern OS. How can I change the behaviour so that the "Password:" request only appears when I can actually type?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI wish to allow a user to use sudo to run a single command (service app status) to determine if my application app is running, in my sudoers file i have: user ALL= /sbin/service app status I understand that there is a parameter called timestamp_timeout that will set the timeout for the 'user', but requires at least 1 entry of the root password.
I wish to allow the user to do "sudo service app status" and not have to enter the root password ever(maybe once is ok), but still make the user enter the root password for all other root activities. Is there a way to prevent the password entry for this command only and no others?
i have a triple boot on my system currently being Win7, Slackware and Linux Mint. The problem i faced was adding an custom entry to my Slackware's Lilo(I used the liloconfig in slackware) can say i like what slackware have to offer but the thing is i tried editing and adding all sorts of things but still when i boot mint, it was started properly. Normally, mint would start with verbose but then startx automatically, however this wasn't achieved and mint stops at a tty login. Any ideas on how to edit the lilo entry. I thought these were the same password?In-fact, they WERE the same password on the set-up I currently have.But now, weirdly, I can log in fine but I the exact same password is not using in order to perform admin tasks.I've tried a recovery mode, console, and then "password (username)" in order to reset the password.This does reset the password I need to use to log in, but the password still does not work for performing admin tasks

View 3 Replies View RelatedI needed to use Synaptic Package Manager to install an app, but the dialog box ("enter the Administrative Password") that pops up before you can use Synaptic doesn't recognize my password ("incorrect password). I tried typing it into a text editor and it's spelled right, caps lock not turned on or anything.
In Terminal, sudo recognizes it, and it is recognized when I log into Ubuntu. I'm the sole user, I have admin privileges, I've been doing admin things.
I just now did System > Administration > Users and Groups and got a dialog box saying
"Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)"
Moving past that, I changed my user password, and Ubuntu authenticated it.
How do you launch Synaptic Package Manager from the command line?
I just finished installing 10.10 on my pc. the problem is that i cant login to the desktop i enter the password, the login sound plays and im stuck looking at the wallpaper. nothing else. i tried logging in safe mode and it worked. how can i get it to work normally?
pc specs:
Pentium 4 2.6 ghz
512mb ram
ati radeon 9600 graphics card
And i installed it using wubi.
I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. Unfortunately, one of our employees cannot remember her password to her email account and as such I need to reset it on our linux server.What I want to check is that this email account is actually a linux user account and I simply will reset the password for it using the passwd command from the root login. In the VeloxBoot.sh, if I don't press any key, my application starts after a timeout. If the user presses a key I want to have a login prompt. Unfortunately, if I start /bin/login, I have a prompt with login, but once I enter my login, it does not ask for a password and it says wrong password

I have installed CC,CLC,SC,NC and a client and logged into thje user interface using my browser for the first time with bith username and passwd as admin and downloaded the credentials.But now as I try to login with the same username and passwd, it says that its an invalid login. I understand we have to change the password on the first login but i don't remember doing the same.
I tried recover password option and gave the user name as admin and email address as my gmail id. It says that I have to follow the instructions sent to the mail, but there is no mail sent I have done it like 5 or 6 times with different mail ids

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.
I have setup a nis server and client. At first I didn't have a local user defined on the client. The client then used the user and passwords from NIS, so that was ok.
The problem then is, that when the server is down, I couldn't login to my client anymore. So I created a local user with the same name on the client but with a different password (after I shut the nis server down, if nis server was on, I couldn't create a local user with the same name). I then edited etc/nssswitch.conf as follows:

However the actual behaviour is that I can only login with the local password now. The NIS pasword doesn't seem to be used anymore.
I have no idea what happened to my OS(ubuntu10.04).it doesn't give me any option to enter my login name & passwd.i just get a blank(default) login screen.last time when it worked,i was trying to install GTK+2.8,but due to my mistake i deleted glib using cmd (sudo apt-get purge glib)and after that i even tried to launch terminal but it failed to launch.also tried to play media files using vlc but it didn't work.so i tried to restart my os and finally got stuck in the problem.i have no idea what to do,please help.Is there any cmd to see what problem occurred or which package is missing.

I've set up password-less login for user1 on a Ubuntu machine to login automatically into a Fedora box using the publickey authentication method. Everything is working smoothly. Now, there is a user2 on Fedora but he does not have an account on Ubuntu.

Predictably neither scp or sftp work either. I have several questions as a result.
1.Is the SSH server rejecting user2 login because I am inadvertently using user1 keys (as I am logged in as user1) ?
2. Do I need to have a user2 account on Ubuntu and public/private key authentication setup with Fedora for user2 to be able to login ?
3. Is there a method I can use to password login as user2 from Ubuntu to Fedora (even though there is no user2 account on Ubuntu) AND still keep password-less login for user1 or do I have to have password-less login for both ?
At present the only way to access the user2 account from Ubuntu is to SSH using the user1 account and then su to user2.
