Programming :: Can't Remove Temporary Files Using Bash Script?

Nov 9, 2010

However, the ffmpeg command generates a temporary file blahblah.mpg.tmp of about 1GB per hour of transcoded video. My issue is that I can't seem to delete these files automatically from any bash script. Now from the command line, I can cd to the directory and just rm -f *.tmp and they get deleted. However, from my script, that same command doesn't remove those files. I thought maybe the file was in use, so I put a sleep command in for like an hour before the delete happens, but it still fails. I also put rm -f /mnt/mythtv/*.tmp in a root cronjob and it still doesn't delete the files.

If I just rm *.tmp I do get a prompt about "Are you sure you want to delete this write protected file?". But the -f switch seems to work fine as a normal user from the command line and just delete them.Does anyone have an idea how to troubleshoot this problem? The particular filesystem that the tmp files get generated on is on it's own xfs partition mounted as /mnt/mythtv.

OpenSUSE :: Disk Full With Temporary Files - System Goes Slower

Jan 24, 2010

I am using OpenSuse 11.2 (64 bits) with KDE 4.3.1. My hard disk partition contains 3 areas : / + /home + swap. Frequently the / area is filling with, I suppose, temporary files until it is full (15 Go) and that in a very short time, typically about 5 mn. Then, these files are cleaned by the system, when disk space is needed I suppose. The point is that during this time, the system goes slower and slower until the "cleaning". That seems to occur only when Firefox (3.5.6) is running so I suppose that these files are temporary internet files.

Ubuntu :: Locating The Pointer With Ctrl?

Mar 2, 2011

Some time ago I did something on my laptop in Ubuntu 10.4 which enabled the Ctrl key to create concentric rings around the cursor so I could find it. I still have that, and it's very useful. But I discovered that it also created very pretty ripples in my wallpaper, as if a stone had been thrown into a pond, and that additional effect has suddenly gone away.I can't remember where this keybinding was set up, and I have searched in vain in CompizConfig for it.

Ubuntu :: Locating Mail - Perl Script For FetchYahoo?

Jun 18, 2010

New Ubuntu user here switched from Windows to Linux. I finally was able to install a program that allowed me to forward my pop3 to Evolution mail so that I have easy access to my emails. However, once I ran the Perl script for fetchyahoo, it asked me what the path was on the system for my mail spool or mailbox. Where exactly is my spool or mailbox for Evolution so that I can get my Yahoo! mail into the client? I have the free version of Yahoo, so I am trying to use fetchyahoo in the hopes that I can circumvent Yahoo's no-pop policy for free users. Found a mail location that I was able to get Evolution's mail client to look for emails in. Still having nightmares getting fetchyahoo to run properly, however. This is a mildly infuriating process.

Debian :: Locating A Certain Folder - No Such File Or Directoy

Feb 28, 2011

I'm trying to run a "Garry's Mod" game server on my dedicated server. I'm using a very helpful tutorial on the Gmod wiki (I cannot post a link to it as I don't have 15 posts or more ).

Now I have very, very little experience with Linux (I am running Debian on it). However, I've gotten quite far in the tutorial, and everything looks to be perfect. I am using putty to access my server, but I also have FTP on it.

Basically, when I need to access a certain folder called "orangebox" (using cd orangebox), an error comes up saying this:-bash: cd: orangebox: No such file or directory.

However, I know that there is such a folder, as I can see it fine on FTP.

Ubuntu Networking :: DNS For Temporary Internal LAN Only?

Dec 6, 2010

I am currently working with a cloning project using FOG on Ubuntu 10.10 (Desktop). While there is certainly a learning curve, all seems to be going well.

For the initial project, I have this "cloning network" isolated completely. Meaning, it is not connected to my main network/domain switch - FOG is handling the DHCP, I have a dedicated managed switch handling the routing between the FOG server and the client clones.

The main problem I am having is that Ubuntu is not able to resolve the hostnames of the client computers.

I know this is because I do not have DNS setup on my Ubuntu PC.

What is the best route to take in order to resolve this? Can I use bind9 to take care of it, or is that too complicated for what I need it to do?

Ubuntu :: Temporary Hangs With HDD Light On?

May 4, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS for almost a year now in WUBI with WinXP. I'm a relative noob with Linux, though always eager to learn more. Lately, I have noticed that every now and then Ubuntu stops working for about 30 seconds or so with the hard disk light solidly on. Clicking anywhere does nothing until it wakes up and then remembers all my previous clicks.

When it doesn't do this, it works wonderfully. I can't figure out what sets it off. And some days it does it annoyingly often and other days not at all or rarely. I checked the log files and this is a sample of some troubled times:

Code:
May 2 19:32:17 ubuntu kernel: [ 909.000011] ata1: lost interrupt (Status 0x58)
May 2 19:32:17 ubuntu kernel: [ 909.000064] ata1: soft resetting link
