Ubuntu :: Libreoffice Works From Menu But Not From Terminal

Jun 23, 2011

From my terminal : >> libreoffice -writer gives :

But if I run it from the menu (applications->office->libreoffice writer) or with sudo it works fine. so something's happening with the permissions, I goes, but I don't quite understand what's wrong. I've tried deleting .libreoffice but this doesn't help. I'm using libreoffice3.3.2 and Ubuntu 11.04.

Ubuntu :: Gnome PPP And KPPP Only Works From Terminal?

Feb 22, 2010

I just installed 9.10 and this is my first time using Ubuntu. I was using Kubuntu before and used KPPP with my Verizon USB720 wireless card. It's the type that gets internet access through the cell towers.I installed KPPP but when I try to start it I get this error:

Quote:

Could not launch KPPP
Failed to execute child process (permission denied)

I tried Gnome PPP and it would open but not connect. This is what is in my log files"

Quote:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.

[code]....

After doing much searching and reading I figured out to open Gnome PPP from the terminal with sudo. When I do that it works fine. Also KPPP opens that way although I haven't tried it to see if it connects. Although this works it's not a very convenient way to connect. How can I get it to work without doing this?

Ubuntu Networking :: USB Wireless Works With NM But Not With Terminal Config

Oct 6, 2010

I recently purchased a Netgear WG111v2 802.11g wireless usb adapter for use with an ARM embedded device (loaded with the ARM port of ubuntu). It uses the rtl8187 driver and, when attached to my laptop, connects perfectly through NetworkManager. Unfortunately, I am not working with any ui on my embedded device so I won't have that luxury and must connect via the terminal. Unfortunately, I'm not able to connect this way on either my laptop or the embedded device (they both CAN pick up surrounding AP's through iwlist scan though). I'm able to set the ssid through

Code: sudo iwlist wlan0 essid "woot" and my access point is temporarily open (no wep/wpa). When I bring the device up using

Code: sudo ifconfig wlan0 up the light on the adapter starts blinking but I'm still not able to connect. iwconfig wlan0 outputs:

General :: Grub Menu Freeze - Hard Frozen - Nothing Works

Aug 31, 2010

I am attempting to boot both OSX 10.6 and Enterprise Linux 5. This is what I did: sudo yum install grub.x86_64

[Code].....

Now, however, when I restart and choose to boot from the Linux partition, I receive the "loading GRUB stage 2" message, and then I receive the standard GRUB menu where I should be able to just press enter and proceed. However, instead of letting me choose a boot option, it just freezes. It is hard frozen. Nothing works. I have two keyboards hooked up, and neither the arrow keys, nor any other keys will cause anything to happen. Even after waiting several minutes, it remains frozen, even though the timeout is set to 10. What on earth is causing this freeze? I am using the exact same instructions in my grub.conf that work on the grub command line. If I delete grub.conf, then it goes back to the GRUB command prompt where I can manually type everything in, and it always works.

General :: Bash Script Works In Terminal But Not In Cron?

Feb 17, 2011

I'm really running into a wall trying to figure this out. I have a Bash script and narrowed down the one command that doesn't seem to work via cron and it's my pgp decrypting line. Works fine if I run the command via terminal but if I run it via cron it doesn't output anything.crontab -e shows the cronjob and it runs, creates the log file with no output. Is there maybe something I need to run as well? Permissions look set, unless the cron is running as a different user(was under the assumption if it showed up under crontab while logged into that user, then it would run as that user.

Software :: Su - From VNC Session Doesn't Work But Works Ok When At The Terminal

Nov 18, 2009

When I connect to my workstation via Real VNC Viewer 4 to Xvnc running on the workstation, and running "su -" I get authentication failure as follows:

So, effectively I cannot su when connected via VNC.

But if I'm at my workstation, I can su just fine:

Interestingly enough, I cannot su to my own userid over vnc, i.e. su xyz

In /var/log/secure I get:

I suspect it has something to do with PAM, but cannot figure it out.

Ubuntu :: How To Remove A Menu Item From Terminal

Jul 12, 2011

I'm looking for a way from the terminal to remove certain menu items from the System | Administration for certain users. I'm working with a CyberCafe style application so user accounts come and go and I wanted to see if I can set it up that after an account is created that it will do some customisations.

I've found examples of adding menu items but nothing specific to removing via the terminal.

I think I may already know the answer to this. The Alacarte application simply manages the XML in the settings.menu to hide menu items and that if I want to do any customisations from the terminal I will need to play with this XML file to hide things.

I'd like the customisation per user rather than a blanket removal for all users

Ubuntu :: Change Alt+F Key To Not Access File Menu In Terminal

Aug 16, 2011

I want to change the Alt+F key in terminal to not access thefile menu (can't think of what it is called but File, Edit, View, etc...at the top). Alt is bound to access the first letter of the names in the file menus. This eliminates the Alt+F shortcut to move forward a word. I don't even mind so much if I permanently remove the alt binding to access the file menus.

My question is how do i get to the terminal style screen as its too quick for me to see the error, and i cant photograph it as its too fast. i cant see it being an issue with the graphics because of the properly displayed kubuntu loading screen beforehand

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - LibreOffice Keeps Crashing

Jul 8, 2011

I've been a long time linux & Ubuntu fan/user. Since the clean install of 11.04, LibreOffice keeps crashing. No day would go past when using either Writer or Calc, that it will not crash. (I think OpenOffice had same issue on Ubuntu 10.10 but only later on in the cycle.) The recovery function works, but it's now beyond a joke to continue to work in such a way, given that I have used Linux exclusively. I develop web apps on Ubuntu, but am seriously thinking of going over to Windows 7 or even OSX if this continues much longer.

If I can't get this issue resolved, I'm going to stop using Linux, which I do not want to do. when searching for clues to issue on this forum and others, people mentioned a 'seg fault', this might be the issue I have, as I think I saw this reported on one of the error logs. I think a seg fault may have something to do with memory, but I don't know for sure.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - How To Replace LibreOffice

Jul 15, 2011

I've been using ubuntu off and on for a while now and haven't gone in depth yet but have recently made the complete transfer from windows. I've been loving it however, I'm trying to link libreOffice Base to a mysql account on my netbook for a course in school but am not getting form controls. I've noticed that these comments were made in the software center and in many forums including this one I believe. I haven't seen a decent response to any of the other posts I saw and have been having other minor issues with libreOffice but have tolerated them so far. This just seems like nobody tested it at all.

I was trying to see what alternatives there were to libreOffice for 11.04. It turns out that it is a total nightmare trying to install and use any other software suite on ubuntu. I purged libreoffice but still cannot successfully install and use openoffice or gnomeoffice from the software center. I search online and in forums and all I see are articles and posts explaining how to ditch other suites and install libreoffice but I'm really trying to do the opposite at this point. I really want to love ubuntu but it is being very difficult to do so right now.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.04 Works But 9.10+ Not Works

Jan 23, 2011

well I'll start by SPECS.

Processor: amd phenom II 965 BE
Motherboard: M4N78 PRO (Asus) newest bios
Memory: Corsair 2gb DDR2 800mhz X2 (4GB)
Video Card: Radeon 5750 1GB
Power: 620W Corsair.
HD: 320GB

I use the TV + HDMI cable. Versions tested 32BITS/64BITS (stay with x64) has no disk error. already downloaded several times. MD5 is correct well ... I'll start here with my concerns ... version 9.04 onwards does not work gives blackscreen. I think "forgotten" by the generic drivers for ATI or something that influences the video. it does not show. 9.10,10.04,10.10 none of those versions worked ... on other computers functioned normally. I found researching how to dribble and go to live. and thus unable to install. but does not work after the pc restarts. Linux does not. shows nothing ... goes to black screen with the (- FLASHING) but nothing else happens.
