Ever since I installed ubuntu 10.10, my laptop is shutting down due to high temperature within 15-20 mins. It makes my laptop literally unusable. Had posted the issue, got some advise but the issue didn't get resolved, hence posting again.

Is there any tool or way by which I can check if it's a hardware issue.
My laptop is frequently shutting down while using Google Earth 7.1.2.2041-r0. It uses 100% CPU, but only on one CPU core, and the problem happens at random.
I don't believe it is related to the CPU temperature, because I created a script that saves the current temperature every two seconds, so when the system shuts down I can see the last, and the highest I got from all the times was 62 °C, while the average from all the times it shut down was 57 °C from /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/hwmon/hwmon1/temp*_input and 51 °C from /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp and /sys/devices/virtual/hwmon/hwmon0/temp1_input. From my research, I understand that coretemp-0 is the temperature of the CPU itself, while the others (acpitz-virtual-0) are from underneath the base of the CPU.
The files under /sys and the command `sensors' tell me that only 80° would trigger a shutdown. I bought this laptop in 2013, and I have never seen it go beyond 6-°C:

I have done a simple stress test by running `cat /dev/zero >/dev/null' on 8 terminals, together with `glxgears' and `supertuxkart' for half an hour, and my system did not shutdown, neither the temperature went beyond 6-°C. The HD temperature lives around 42 °C, according to `sudo smartctl -l scttemp /dev/sda'.

My Samsung R530 laptop is over heating, I believe it is the fan because I can't feel it working at all. When it over heats it just shutsdown. A few times it is came up with a warning while shutting down for a split second saying a extremely high temperature and shutting down seconds later. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 with Nvidia Geforce with Cuda. I have tried reinstalling Ubuntu, installing Fedora... Nothing I have tried has worked.

Normally the temperature is 50-52 Celsius in idle but with Ubuntu 10.04 beta 2 idle temp is 60 Celsius. /proc/cpuinfo shows both cores on 1GHz which is good but still temp is higher than usual. I tried to find solution using Google but I didn't find anything.

There are no high usage of CPU and Memory. but still get high temperature. same in karmic 9.1. I have been using this ubuntu 10.04 beta2 fresh install just today. I did not do anything or install anything. It gets hot easily after few minutes. It was installed properly and no problem.
2nd problem is I try to reboot then i see the wifi signal and it detects my wifi and also my accesspoint. so I try to connect. I was connected to my accesspoint. My accesspoint is near my side. then I click firefox to test the connection. but no luck. cannot display page. maybe the internet was block even i was connected to my accesspoint. I try to check the signal then I saw (88%).

cpu temp in Suse 11.2 is over than 55 C (sysem don not have any task) , but in windows 7 temp is 42 C
in fedora is 46 C I have new fresh install of suse 11.2 my cpu is : AMD Phenom(tm) II X2 550 Processor

My suppositions:
a) undervolting not supported/bug/what everelse?
b) proprietary drivers needed?? maybe the high thermal power is produced by GPU and not from CPU?
On my lenovo g560 i have Intel core i3-330m, i have both debian squeeze and windows 7 installed on my laptop.Today i noticed that while playing music (amarok) and playing a flash game (google chrome, game - tetris, lol (: ) the processor core temperature was around 70-71deg celsius.I restarted and booted windows 7, doing the same thing (music and tetris) the processor temperature is aournd 54-55deg celsius.Can anyone explain why the high temperature when running debian?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

In Vista the software Epower controls the fan but in linux I have to install acer_fancontrol and I have installed it as per instructions. It works fine till i reboot and then i get a frozen screen with the BT5 background and in terminal i get 1gear and goes on till 3rdgear without me being able to use BT5.

View 4 Replies View RelatedJust put a fresh clean copy of Lucid on the laptop. I have noticed this for a while on the otherr versions and distros also, and finally started looking at. My laptop runs, contantly.The fan seems to be always running. I don't have more the a couple of applications at time, I don't use it for work, so nothing extensive. Web browsing, music, email, photos. End user stuff. So I added a heat application in the panel just to see what was happening. I can get the temp down to around 150F-ish if I am not even looking at the laptop. But, open anything and start workingand I am sitting arround 183F-185F. Is this normal? I am just getting toired of having such a hot laptop on my lap, I even have a pad under it so the air can circulate witht the fan, but, a constant running fan is what I have and the heat can be felt through the pad if I am sitting for a couple of hours.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, and so far I'm digging it a lot more than 10.04 (had annoying sound issues then), but I have a mild issue with playing online radio streaming through either FireFox or Chrome.
After about 25 minutes or so, the audio will just stop, I then have to click on my radio channel to get it back up again. Kind of annoying. I assume this is some sort of plugin or keep alive issue?
It's getting really annoying now. If I leave the netbook idle for like 2 mins it will lock the keyring and ask me to log back in.
Is there any way I can disable this?
I have tried updating my kernel from 2.6.38-8-generic to 2.6.38-10 (since 2.6.39 was not available when i tried the update) but on updating grub, I get a syntax error. I have also read through this thread HTML Code: [URL] which has not managed to solve my issue. I have been using this version of Ubuntu (11.04) for about a month and a half now and this is the first time am running into this. View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just done an upgrade after noticing the Update manager thingee at the bottom of the screen. I was listening to my music when I noticed it.
I did the Restart now after upgrading. Now I have no sound at all. Checked headphones were turned up which they were. Checked sound settings and found there were no Devices in Hardware and Input and a Dummy Output (stereo) listed in Output. I would have thought that my onboard sound would have shown up as well as the sound bits on my HDMI card - not that I've ever managed to get sound out of my telly via the HDMI cable. (I do have Alsa sound installed).
I have intel 945 motherboard which supports maximum 2G DDR2 RAM at 667MHz. Now in the market RAM with minimum freq is 800MHz and i am confused should i install the 800 MHz RAM. Would installing RAM with higher freq than required harm my motherboard or will it work without problem to the hardware. my desktop is rebooting every 15 mins. I checked with memcheck and it showed RAM was bad.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy USB mouse stops working sometimes after 5 mins, sometimes 30 mins. Used two different '"corded" USB mice, different USB ports. Same issue. The power to the mouse itself seems to turn off as the laser light is off. Unplugging and replacing does not fix, only a reboot. Same problem with Ubuntu and Mint.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu-based fileserver, which I have set up and works fine for 5 computers (Windows & Linux based). I have one computer, on Windows, which when I map as a network drive it works and I can transfer small files using the USB adapter. However, when copying over a large file, after 2 mins or so it comes up with the error "Specified network name cannot be found". However when plugged in using Ethernet, it will work fine.
What is even stranger is when I set it up as an FTP server rather than SAMBA, it will happily transfer a 4gb file on the USB adapter, which possibly knocks out driver issues (I have tried 2 different drivers, am currently using Linksys one from website - WUSB300N) AND perhaps the issue lies on the Linux server side with setting up the SAMBA server? However I do have another one of these adapters that works fine, but it is on WIN XP HOME with a custom network logon script (as HOME won't remember passwords after restart). BUT it does work on another computer with XP PRO as network place, so I tried network place on this one, and it still doesn't work.......
Just reinstalled Opensuse 11.4 and after about 20-30 mins the screen goes black and shuts down
