Hardware :: Desktop Is Rebooting Every 15 Mins?
Dec 23, 2010
I have intel 945 motherboard which supports maximum 2G DDR2 RAM at 667MHz. Now in the market RAM with minimum freq is 800MHz and i am confused should i install the 800 MHz RAM. Would installing RAM with higher freq than required harm my motherboard or will it work without problem to the hardware. my desktop is rebooting every 15 mins. I checked with memcheck and it showed RAM was bad.

My USB mouse stops working sometimes after 5 mins, sometimes 30 mins. Used two different '"corded" USB mice, different USB ports. Same issue. The power to the mouse itself seems to turn off as the laser light is off. Unplugging and replacing does not fix, only a reboot. Same problem with Ubuntu and Mint.

I am a convert to OpenSUSE having recently ditched Windows. I really like the latest version of OpenSUSE but keep experiencing this annoying system freeze every 20 minutes or so. I get absolutely no response from the keyboard, although I do have the mouse working. However the end result is ALWAYS a cold boot
I am running SUSE on a spare machine as follows:
DELL Optiplex GX270 standard machine with integrated peripheral devices etc. Chipsets are all up to date and the hard drive is performing without fault. 1.25 Gb Ram

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, and so far I'm digging it a lot more than 10.04 (had annoying sound issues then), but I have a mild issue with playing online radio streaming through either FireFox or Chrome.
After about 25 minutes or so, the audio will just stop, I then have to click on my radio channel to get it back up again. Kind of annoying. I assume this is some sort of plugin or keep alive issue?

It's getting really annoying now. If I leave the netbook idle for like 2 mins it will lock the keyring and ask me to log back in.
Is there any way I can disable this?

Ever since I installed ubuntu 10.10, my laptop is shutting down due to high temperature within 15-20 mins. It makes my laptop literally unusable. Had posted the issue, got some advise but the issue didn't get resolved, hence posting again.
Below is previous post.

Is there any tool or way by which I can check if it's a hardware issue.

I have tried updating my kernel from 2.6.38-8-generic to 2.6.38-10 (since 2.6.39 was not available when i tried the update) but on updating grub, I get a syntax error. I have also read through this thread HTML Code: [URL] which has not managed to solve my issue. I have been using this version of Ubuntu (11.04) for about a month and a half now and this is the first time am running into this. Am using a Compaq Presario CQ40 Laptop with AMD Turion X2 and ATI Radeon 3200 HD

I've just done an upgrade after noticing the Update manager thingee at the bottom of the screen. I was listening to my music when I noticed it.
I did the Restart now after upgrading. Now I have no sound at all. Checked headphones were turned up which they were. Checked sound settings and found there were no Devices in Hardware and Input and a Dummy Output (stereo) listed in Output. I would have thought that my onboard sound would have shown up as well as the sound bits on my HDMI card - not that I've ever managed to get sound out of my telly via the HDMI cable. (I do have Alsa sound installed).

I can get connected to the Internet when I reboot the system, but the connection usually fails after within 10 mins. However, even then the network manager says it's connected. Never reconnect, manually or automatically.

I have been working on this for a few hours now and still haven't been able to track down whats going on. I just switched servers and put a fresh debian install on with apache2 + custom suexec + php5(fcgi). now when i upload a file to the site it wont upload, so i tracked down the issue. its the /tmp directory that root tmp. its at 100% so i restart the /etc/init.d/apache2 process and the /tmp directory is automagically cleared to 20% used and i can upload again. so i figure ok its got to be a setting. i looked in all the conf files conf.d the php5 conf files and no where do i have a /tmp directory set. so i think OK I can build a cron to clear the tmp directory every 10 mins till i find the issue, but alas, when i go into the tmp directory There are NO files to delete!!! wtf. holy crap. and all that goodness, this is crazy, how can you have a tmp directory that is not being written to, from all i can see, so i think ok it might be a hard link, i checked, in all root and sub root directories no hard links to tmp, no soft links to temp either. and if i sit in my /tmp directory and do a df -h after some uploads its going from 20% so 23% and up, but i do ls -alh and nothing, then ls -al and watch bytes, nothing , so this is very strange. has anyone encountered something like this? is it possible that this is a hard link thats hidden somewhere or some other extreme function i have never heard of?

I have an Ubuntu-based fileserver, which I have set up and works fine for 5 computers (Windows & Linux based). I have one computer, on Windows, which when I map as a network drive it works and I can transfer small files using the USB adapter. However, when copying over a large file, after 2 mins or so it comes up with the error "Specified network name cannot be found". However when plugged in using Ethernet, it will work fine.
What is even stranger is when I set it up as an FTP server rather than SAMBA, it will happily transfer a 4gb file on the USB adapter, which possibly knocks out driver issues (I have tried 2 different drivers, am currently using Linksys one from website - WUSB300N) AND perhaps the issue lies on the Linux server side with setting up the SAMBA server? However I do have another one of these adapters that works fine, but it is on WIN XP HOME with a custom network logon script (as HOME won't remember passwords after restart). BUT it does work on another computer with XP PRO as network place, so I tried network place on this one, and it still doesn't work.......

Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

I also tried to alt+f1 and control c, then delete the x lock and 'start x' but it wouldn't work. How can I 'exec newwindow manager' and restart x without a reboot?

I just installed a CentOS 5.4 x 64 on a customer's server last Saturday. I use lpr/lpd to print through this server to our network printers.
yum install cups-lpd
Edit /etc/xinetd.d/cups-lpd: disable = no
I did several restarts on /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups. I even did a "kill -SIGHUP 0" and a "kill -SIGHUP pid_xinetd". No joy. I finally gave up and rebooted: joy. Shades of Windows.
What did I miss? How do I start cup-lpd after yum without rebooting.

I have two dual boot systems, each running Fedora 11 and a version of Windows. When I boot into Windows after running Fedora on either, the Windows time is wrong and I have to reset it. But, if I reboot from Windows into Windows, the Windows time is right . I think this results from different ways Fedora and Linux keepi track of time and what they do to the real time hardware clock.Could someone explain exactly what is going wrong and how I can resolve the problem?

About 2 weeks ago i installed ubuntu 10.10 and downloaded fresh network drivers. I ran autorun.sh, the module was compiled and installed, i could see it with lsmod. But after rebooting the old module appeared again, but no file for him were in modules directory because autorun.sh removed old module file. Some time passed and I figured out that it is initrd who is guilty. I couldn't check it because i already deleted ubuntu and installed Fedora 14 Beta. Today i tried to repeat my steps and installed new network module on Fedora. But when i rebooted and started again i was surprised - new module works instead my old one. Everything is fine So, my question, does Fedora use initrd? I saw some files in /boot that which are initrd files (as i think). Or may be not every fedora system uses initrd or something else?

My laptop (as many others) has a hardware switch which turns wireless/bluetooth disabled. If after booting up the system I switch on this key, the wireless would still remain disabled and I need to reboot the system to be able to connect to any network.
I have tried
Code:
rfkill unblock all
ifconfig wlan0 up
Is there any way to activate wireless without rebooting the system?
