Ubuntu :: Installing Firefox With Sudo Apt-get?

Jul 3, 2011

In installing Firefox with sudo apt-get install firefox I don't get Firefox version 5. It seems odd that with Firefox being the main browser included with Ubuntu we don't get the greatest. What is the location of Firefox in Ubuntu, so I can install it with the tar command like on Slackware? Also, anyone know an operand to make tar overwrite files in Ubuntu so I don't have to rm them first, or is this just enhanced security?

Ubuntu :: Can't Run "sudo Firefox" After Installing Security Updates

Jun 1, 2011

After installing a number of security updates that were listed in the update manager, I can no longer run the "sudo firefox" command.

I got the error message:No protocol specified cannot open display

I found this thread: [url]

Through which I found that I am able to run "sudo firefox" after running:

HTML Code:

I realize this doesn't give you a lot to go on.

Question: Is there a way to view which updates were last installed on my system?

Ubuntu :: Firefox Only Opens If Using 'sudo'

Mar 26, 2011

I have a win7 laptop and installed a dual-boot ubuntu 10.10. I'm using firefox & thunderbird, shared between windows and ubuntu (default profiles are on a fat32 disk that is shared between the two OSs). I can mount the fat32 disk as usual, but I can't get firefox OR thunderbird to start unless I start them from a terminal using 'sudo'. This is kinda strange. I used to do this all the time and never had a problem before.

I installed firefox, then did:

cd /etc/firefox
sudo firefox -P

in the profile manager, I set the profile file etc, but when I open firefox without doing 'sudo firefox', it hangs up and cannot find the profile. Why do I have to use 'sudo' to open firefox or thunderbird?

It works fine on my other laptop, but I've deleted & reinstalled ubuntu 3 times on this laptop and still have the same problem.

Ubuntu :: Can't Run Firefox - Thunderbird Without Sudo / Resolve This?

Jan 19, 2010

I just migrated into Ubuntu 9.10 from Windows and moved my mail profiles and also my bookmarks to Thunderbird and Firefox.

I can't see the Mail profiles and messages unless I run "sudo thunderbird" and I can't save or edit bookmarks in Firefox unless I run "sudo firefox".

Probably it's best if I don't run Firefox or Thunderbird as root, eh?

I've tried changing the file permissions for bookmarks.html, but no luck. And haven't even tried to tackle the Thunderbird issue yet.

I sudo apt-get removed Firefox from my system in favor of Google Chrome. However, Ubuntu still prompts me to upgrade Firefox. How do I stop that? Also, whenever I click on HTML files, Firefox is still the one that loads by default. How can that be if I've sudo apt-get removed it? And Firefox is still in my Applications->Internet menu... So, was my sudo apt-get remove successful?

Ubuntu :: Installing Packages Without Sudo Access?

Nov 24, 2010

I do a lot of testing and developing on an Ubuntu machine at my university, and I don't have sudo access to the machine. It hasn't been a problem so far because the tools I've needed have been installed.

However, I have to build OpenCV, which has a lot of dependencies, some of which (notably, libbz2-dev) aren't installed.

I have access to localtmp on the local drive, and of course my own home folder (which is on NFS). Is there a way for me to install a local version of the tools I need using apt-get without sudo access? If not, is there another way to install them? I've been using CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/localtmp for some builds, but I'm not sure if this is the way to go, or if there is a better way.

tl;dr Is there a way to install applications locally without the ability to sudo?

Ubuntu :: Installing Firefox 3.5 On 8.10?

Mar 11, 2010

I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.10 on my system76 notebook as I was having problem after problem after upgrading. However, not having up to date software is a bit of a problem. How should I go about installing firefox 3.5 so I can have the most up to date version? Will I need to compile? Can I just install a .deb from karmic repos? Does the current version need removed first?

And there are several other pieces of software I want to stay current with, such as digiKam, but found it impossible because of dependency hell. Should I expect to be downloading tarballs and compiling any programs I want to upgrade past their stage in the 8.10 repos?

Ubuntu :: Installing Firefox 4 Beta On 10.04?

Jan 21, 2011

So i have installed FireFox 4 Beta (..some reason its called Minefield 4.0 Browser??) on ubuntu 10.04 - now I have recently installed it onto my Windows machine about a week ago and I am inlove with it over Chrome, which is why I made the switch for my Ubuntu machine aswell - but I am wondering..

1) Why does it look like Firefox 3?? On windows its a completely new layout, design, and feel.. but on Ubuntu it looks and acts just like regular Firefox 3.

2) Whats with the name difference? When I pull up my browswer data online it says its Mozilla 5.0, but just dont understand?

3) Some javascript/jquery does not work anymore?

Is there something that I have done wrong, or installed the wrong package? I tried to download the file from firefox's website directly (a .tar.bz2 file) but could not figure out how to install it [i am an ubuntu newbie], so I went into terminal and installed it with the package manager with the following command(s):

Code:
sudo apt-get remove firefox
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean

[Code]....

now this might be more of a firefox question, but I am sure there are some Ubuntu users using the 4.0 beta w/ HTML5, WebGL and other new features

Ubuntu :: Setting Up/installing 2 Different Firefox Browsers?

May 28, 2011

so I'm trying to run an extension for firefox that is no longer handled with firefox 4.0+. I've googled that you can run two different versions of firefox on the same system, but you have to have them set up as two different profiles. Basically having the two different browsers set up in two different locations running there own things from different files, etc.

How can I go about setting up an older version of firefox in a different location, instead of just running the setup in general which would conflict with my newer version?

I know it can be done, but a simple sudo apt-get install firefox (version x.x) will basically override my newer version I would imagine. I've already found where to get the older versions file and everything, I just don't want to mess up my new version

Can someone please help me as to how to install this in another location not affecting my current version? I also understand that I will have to have another command to run this older version, so maybe if you could shed some light on how to set up the new command also,
