Ubuntu :: Install - Mbr - Boot Records Aren't Written - Except

Nov 7, 2010

i am write in the forum because i am a bit of resignated. i tried almost all distries and just suse i can install on my notebook without any problems. actually the install works on all other linux deviantes too but the boot records arent written - except for opensuse - but i dont like opensuse. ubuntu is the system which i have choosen and makes a very handsome impression to me. but back to the main problem my notebook is a sony vaio with 4x64 GB SSD cards. 2 ssd's - raid 1 with windows 7 and the other 2 ssd's (volume1) should be ubuntu. the devs are in /dev/mapper/isw_bic_fifbgib_Volume12 till volume 17

i tried to install the boot files to mbr, on volume1, volume2 to the /boot, to a sd card, to a memory stick but ubuntu wont boot from SSD. i just can boot with cd but its not a option for me.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Fails To Be Written In Boot Sector / What I Need To Do?

Nov 21, 2010

I am a complete noob at this and I need a hand. I was about to throw my computer out of the window when I decided to throw the windows out of the computer so to speak. So, I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and tried to install. I had a grub rescue after the installation (file system unknown), which I have seen discussed here. Being the noob that I am I decided to try 10.04 because it said it had full support. With this install I get a similar error during installation: grub cannot be installed in boot sector.

So, basically there is an issue with grub and the boot sector. I checked in my BIOS options to see if there was an option that prevented the writing of a boot sector or something, but I have not been able something like that. So, I am wondering if it is possible that Ubuntu does not really erase/format the selected disks or something, leaving any difficulty there.

Does anybody know? Or better yet: what exactly do I need to do a manual grub install?

General :: Packages Seemingly Install Fine With Zypper But Can't Be Run And Aren't In Menus

Oct 3, 2010

I'm not sure how to describe this because no-one else on the internet seems to have had anything even vaguely resembling this problem. I'm trying to install wxPython for openSUSE 11.3 (which seems to be called python-wxGTK which is fine). I don't think it's a problem with that particular package because I seem to remember something going wrong ages ago, the last time I installed something, but it didn't affect that particular install so I paid no notice. I'm sorry, that was a really vague statement and won't help anyone in the slightest. Anyway, the reason I think that event was relevant is that ever since then my Gnome menus have been out of sync - the new package I installed didn't appear on the menu.

Anyway, onto actual useful stuff. Just as a test case (to see that nothing was wrong with wxPython) I installed another small application with zypper (just the standard sudo zypper install moneyplex). zypper didn't complain at all and as far as I know it went perfectly.

Fedora :: Install / Remove Packages Written On A Text File?

Sep 9, 2010

I use the show-leaves yum plugin, and sometimes I use that info to remove some unnecessary packages. But that list can be long, so I write them on a text file.

1) Instead of removing packages one by one is there a way to remove all packages written in that text file?

2) Why isn't the output of the show-leaves plugin compatible with the output of "package-cleanup --leaves"?

Second problem my cd writer is kinda out of order so i followed this guide (Live USB stick - openSUSE) to make a live usb stick to try out other distros...... everything went well....dd wrote everything properly.....but when i try to boot, it says thats it is a non-system disk and says to replace it strike again....so basically its not working.....

i think i followed all the instructions in the guide properly....but still i am pasting it over here (the drive was given as sdb...i checked using ls -l) umount /dev/sdb dd if=/home/arkadeep/LinuxMint-8.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M;sync i used linuxmint..... yeah so dd writes everything and the size is also correct. so now i can't figure out what to do...

I already tried without burnfree but that didn't help either. Anyone know what the problem might be. It might be that the cdwriter is defective as I never tried it before (pretty new Dell workstation) but somehow I don't think so.

Ubuntu :: DNS SRV Records - Subdomains Work On IP Address?

Apr 11, 2011

I am quite interested in one thing. I am trying to code my dns server that when I connect to one of my subdomains it connects not only to an ip address but to an ip : port address. For this I tried using SRV record, but with lack of success.

Dns server specification:
OS Ubuntu server 10.10 and using bind9
I have configured everything so that my subdomains work on an ip address, but I need some of them to work on ip : port too. In my brfconcept.lv.db file i used: (what I mentioned below isn't the full content of the file)

Code:
_http._udp IN SRV 0 5 27017 testing.brfconcept.lv
testing IN A 83.99.211.134
in my rev.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa i used: (what I mentioned below isn't the full content of the file)
Code:
134 IN PTR testing.brfconcept.lv

What I would want is not just for 1 service to aim at at the 27017 port but all services if its possible, when you enter testing.brfconcept.lv Is that possible and what am I doing wrong?

Ubuntu :: Delete Files That Aren't On Another Folder

Feb 5, 2010

I've been organizing my pictures (i.e. deleting the bad ones). However, I've recently got hold of those same pictures on a higher resolution and I'd like to delete the same pictures of the higher resolutions. This means that I'll have two folders, High Res and Low Res. I'd go through all files in the High Res folder and I'll check if there's a file with the same name in the Low Res folder. If there is, the file in the High Res folder will be kept. Otherwise, I'll delete it.So I wanted some quick way to delete PIC1.JPG, PIC3.JPG and PIC4.JPG from the High Res folder.

Ubuntu :: HDD Files Have Disappeared But Aren't Hidden?

Jun 6, 2010

I have an external HDD which i keep all my movies and tv shows and whatnot on. I rebooted my laptop routinely and when the HDD reconnected it still has the same amount of disc space used up but in my movie folder only 221/1186 movies are showing up in nautilus. I opened KDirStat to check and all the movies are still on the HDD nothing has been erased. I have restarted the laptop, restarted the HDD, disconnected/reconnected the HDD, swapped USB ports. I don't think it matters but I have written a .sh script that generates a list of all the folders contents and outputs it to a .txt file. Even though the HDD is only showing 221 files the txt output has all 1186. why 800 files would just not show up in nautilus explorer?

Currently running:
Ubuntu 9.10
Nautilus 1:2.28.10ubuntu3

EDIT: I can still access and play every file that is not showing up by opening them through a media player such as VLC. Also when i Alt+F2 and type the directory and file name they still fill themselves in as normal also.

Ubuntu Installation :: HDDs Aren't Being Detected

Oct 4, 2010

My reality distortion field went through a polarity shift today, and nothing's been working like it should. After the 10,000th problem, I decided to just make room for a fresh lucid install and the accompanying stability. It worked well, then I had some sort of a boot error upon reboot. So then I just decided to reinstall. The problem is that neither of my 2 internal HDDs is registering. Currently sda is an 80GB drive with a slackware install, sdb is a 120GB with a 60GB mint partition and (upon previous install) 60GB lucid partition. I've got no important data on any of my partitions yet, but also no net connection. I have install dvds for lucid, mint kde 9, and slackware plus a gparted live. I'm seriously considering making this machine a slack standalone, but then I've got legacy nvidia drivers to deal with.

Networking :: How Many MX Records Are Allowed

May 25, 2010

I have a sitution that I am trying to set up.

I have 2 email servers that run on Windows: one is for internal purposes, the other is external purposes.

The external one will receive e-mail from the outside world, clean it up and forward it to the internal one.

There are 2 Windows Vista machines and 2 Unix (OpenSuse Linux) machines.

Since there can be only 1 email server per domain, I thought I would:

-> set up a local domain with ALL of the machines in it

-> set up a DNS server for the local domain

-> set up a MX record in the DNS server for the email

For the external machine, just have a Dynamic IP point to the Windows machine holding the external email server.

Does this sound plausible? Does this make sense?

Server :: Migrate DNS Records From Old To New?

Nov 3, 2009

Our hardware that is running DNS is very old (Pentium 1 Redhat release 6.2), and I want to migrate the DNS Records to a new computer (Pentium 4 Debian Lenny). There is no GUI environment on the old server: no Gnome or KDE. I may consider using VMware Workstation for this project.

2. Are there commands that I can run to export the DNS records from the old server?

3. Are there commands that I can run to import the DNS records to the new server?

4. What other advice do you have that could help this process?
