So I JUST got back to Ubuntu and got my installation all up and running, but Compiz has apparently changed a bit as my desktop cube is not what it used to be. On 9.XX, 8.XX, and 7.XX; I clearly remember being able to make the Windows on each cube face appear to be stacked, however I cannot find this setting ANYWHERE in the new compiz menu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a PC with three partitions: C, D, E. The C: and D: partition are NTFS and C: has Windows XP on it. D: holds my data files and folders in the Windows environment. E: has CentOS version 5.x. The machine is dual bootable. When booting up Grub gave me the options to boot to CentOS (by default) or to boot into Win XP (by selecting it).
Recently I used Partition Magic to resize the D: partition. I shrank the D: partition. The freed space space was then used to create a new NTFS partition.
After the partitioning was completed, I rebooted the machine. But now Grub is having a problem. It does not display the list of of bootable OS options any more. Instead there is just a black screen with the prompt:

What am I supposed to do here?
I am afraid that after I ran Partition Magic somehow Grub is messed up. How do I recover the previous boot options? Or at the minimum, how do I make the the machine to boot into Windows XP?
I have just upgraded from 10.04 -> 10.10 and my 'scale' plugin is not working properly in compiz (the rest works well).I do have the effect working with "super+a, super+w" , but "edge" does not work.I can modify values via gconf, I have: "initiate_all_edge" set to "BottomLeft" but this doesnt respond.The weirdest thing is that the compiz scale options part instead of giving me 4 tabs of options -> gives this.(image below) i tried reinstalling a few times & purge compiz + install back, but result remained the same.

I wanted to set my Desktop cube using Compiz and selected OpenGL, but this blew my whole UI away and I cannot control anything anymore. From the empty screen I opened the application console using crtl + F2 There, a Login shows up but I do not know how to login (yeah LOLing here too). Username and my Password didnt make it. How about floating windows above desktop cube? Dodge? In which upon selecting a window, the non-selected windows move around it to move it to the front.I also notice that many window updates are very poor. For example, in the compiz settings manager when I switch tabs, the window does not actually update unless I move it. I click on a tab and it looks just like the previous tab. If I move the mouse around, it will update the wind in blocks under the mouse, but not the whole window.And, it would appear that the standard compiz is still available from my desktop settings in KDE. Could I have failed to remove the original compiz?
So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

I googled around and found PearPC which apparently lets you run Mac 10.4 'Tiger'. I installed pearpc via the repos and have a 6GB file that I'm needing apparently. All the tutorials I could find where for using Pearpc on Windows which used a pear GUI for creating a 'configuration file'. Which I am unable to find for Ubuntu. I was also unable to figure how to create one via Terminal.

However, I've recently got hold of those same pictures on a higher resolution and I'd like to delete the same pictures of the higher resolutions.This means that I'll have two folders, High Res and Low Res. I'd go through all files in the High Res folder and I'll check if there's a file with the same name in the Low Res folder. If there is, the file in the High Res folder will be kept. Otherwise, I'll delete it.So I wanted some quick way to delete PIC1.JPG, PIC3.JPG and PIC4.JPG from the High Res folder.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an external HDD which i keep all my movies and tv shows and whatnot on. I rebooted my laptop routinely and when the HDD reconnected it still has the same amount of disc space used up but in my movie folder only 221/1186 movies are showing up in nautilus. I opened KDirStat to check and all the movies are still on the HDD nothing has been erased. I have restarted the laptop, restarted the HDD, disconnected/reconnected the HDD, swapped USB ports. I don't think it matters but I have written a .sh script that generates a list of all the folders contents and outputs it to a .txt file. Even though the HDD is only showing 221 files the txt output has all 1186. why 800 files would just not show up in nautilus explorer?

EDIT: I can still access and play every file that is not showing up by opening them through a media player such as VLC. Also when i Alt+F2 and type the directory and file name they still fill themselves in as normal also.
My reality distortion field went through a polarity shift today, and nothing's been working like it should. After the 10,000th problem, I decided to just make room for a fresh lucid install and the accompanying stability. It worked well, then I had some sort of a boot error upon reboot. So then I just decided to reinstall. The problem is that neither of my 2 internal HDDs is registering. Currently sda is an 80GB drive with a slackware install, sdb is a 120GB with a 60GB mint partition and (upon previous install) 60GB lucid partition. I've got no important data on any of my partitions yet, but also no net connection. I have install dvds for lucid, mint kde 9, and slackware plus a gparted live. I'm seriously considering making this machine a slack standalone, but then I've got legacy nvidia drivers to deal with.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I set my preferences via the Appearance Preferences dialogue they are not preserved after reboot. It always reverts back to Visual Effects; "None" upon reboot or logoff.
"Theme" and "Background" preferences are preserved but "Fonts" and "Visual Effects" are not.
The None setting forces my PC to exhibit wacky renderings making it unusable. Normal or Extra settings function as expected.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi am write in the forum because i am a bit of resignated. i tried almost all distries and just suse i can install on my notebook without any problems. actually the install works on all other linux deviantes too but the boot records arent written - except for opensuse - but i dont like opensuse. ubuntu is the system which i have choosen and makes a very handsome impression to me. but back to the main problem my notebook is a sony vaio with 4x64 GB SSD cards. 2 ssd's - raid 1 with windows 7 and the other 2 ssd's (volume1) should be ubuntu. the devs are in /dev/mapper/isw_bic_fifbgib_Volume12 till volume 17
i tried to install the boot files to mbr, on volume1, volume2 to the /boot, to a sd card, to a memory stick but ubuntu wont boot from SSD. i just can boot with cd but its not a option for me.
I tried many different ways to get a screen shot (gnome's tool, gimp, compiz plugin, xwd, import) and in all of them the screenshot was filled with jagged colored bars. I tried both with and without compiz and the same thing happened. I'm using gnome with fedora 11.

I had the "set-cap" exception problem, so when the fix was released, I updated. Since then, the ubuntuone-preferences dialog will not start or work. I tried the me bar, the system menu, and the CLI.Now, I bought some music the first day the store opened and it downloaded fine. Then yesterday I bought another album and the store hangs on "downloading the files." Six hours later, it still won't move.
It gets weirder. The music store says its trying to download a couple of tracks from the first album (even though they are already downloaded), the second album shows up as downloaded under the Web UI, but doesn't show up at all on my desktop .ubuntuone folder.I've tried the IRC a couple of times, with no response. (In fairness, it may have been bad timing, I'm in New York) I don't mind trying to sort this out myself, but I'd just like some more hints. I've looked at the syncd log and found the exception, but I don't know how else to restart the syncd. At the same time, my files *are* synching, and *one* of my address books is synching (my gmail account contacts aren't). I know this is alot at once, but I'm afraid of dividing the problem and missing something.

Intel Pentium M 1.5 GHz
512mb RAM
60gb HD
Before attempting the below, I had XP installed on it, and it ran without issues, other than being a little slow.I'm looking to install a linux distro, but I've had a ridiculous amount of issues so far. Currently, there isn't anything installed on the machine. I've tried (booting via cd iso's):
1. Ubuntu 10.04.2-desktop-i386: Got to splash screen, then black screen. Never got to iso boot menu.
2. XUbuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386: Got to splash screen, then boot menu. Chose the install option, and it went to a black screen. Nothing else happened.
3. openSUSE-11.4-KDE-LiveCD-i686: Installed all the way, except the graphics didn't behave correctly, the whole thing was glitchy and problematic, I decided to move on.
4. XUbuntu-10.04.2-alternate-i386: After a seemingly perfect installation, upon reboot I get this...
"The disk drive is not ready yet /dev/mapper/crystswap is not ready yet or not present", then gives me the option to wait or do a recovery. I tried waiting, it boots to a black screen. I tried the recovery, and now it doesn't boot at all.
Anyone have any good recommendations for a linux distro that should work out of the box with this laptop? I'd like to install NetBeans, firefox, and etc, so nothing too basic. Just something that will run quickly given my specs.
Recently, I'm having a problem with items not appearing on my desktop (at least not right away) after just being saved there, forcing me to either find them in a Konqueror window (they do show up there) or do some other unusual thing to make the desktop notice them. They used to, and as far as I know, they always should. For instance, I just took two screenshots with Ksnapshot, and told it to save them on my desktop. It saved them, but they didn't show up on the desktop. When I noticed that, I opened the desktop folder in Konqueror, and mainly to see what would happen, tried to drag the screenshot files from the Konqueror window onto the desktop (copying the files onto themselves). That made the desktop notice the files--they appeared. But of course I shouldn't have had to do it. What could be wrong?
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I started having this problem where most users on the system are unable to log into the system over SSH. Their user name and password is correct, however it shows them as invalid when they are in fact valid. I've tried changing their password but that didn't work. I also tried deleting their account, as well as their home directory, and then recreating the account, but that didn't work. Only root and perhaps one or two other select accounts are able to log in without problems. I even tried a reboot to see if that would fix it, but as I theorized, it wouldn't. I also checked and ensured their home directory was chowned to them, and that they even had a home directory. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated to help me get this issue resolved. As a dsie note, they are showing up as invalid in /vars/logs/auth.log. Running Debian 5.0 Lenny.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have configured 'passwordless' SSH between our machines using GSSAPI authentication which is all working beautifully (Active Directory KDC).I now want to make sure that the user's kerberos crednetials are forwarded as well using the 'GSSAPIDelegateCredentials yes' on the SSH client.However, it seems as though the openssh server on Red Hat 4.8 has not been compiled to support this, because if I run sshd in debug mode, I see the client 'delegating credentials' but nothing appears in the debug log on the server to suggest the the credentials have been received, and sure enough a quick 'klist' shows that the user does not have any tickets.So two questions:1. Am I right about openssh-server on Red Hat Enterprise 4.8 not supporting delegated credentials
