Ubuntu Multimedia :: Flash 64 Bit Install Running Live Usb?

Jun 20, 2011

Dell 64 bit laptop with no hard drive, I'm running 10.04.2 from a 4 gb flash drive in persistence mode (Linux Live USB), and I'm trying to get ..... to work. I've tried everything on Adobe's site, and several methods from the forums. what's the trick to installing flash in either Firefox or 64 bit Chrome on a 64 bit system? The last method I tried was here, and the terminal said 404 not found after the download command.

I can usually find this stuff myself, but my eyes are getting watery, and my throat tight, and (sniff) I think

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install/boot From Live Cd Or Flash Drive

Aug 17, 2010

I have made several live Cd's and img for my flash drive and tried to even preview Ubuntu before install, but nothing seems to be working. it makes it to the screen that says Ubuntu with the dots and the dots "cycle" then afew seconds later, weather cd or flash drive, everything just stops and my computer freezes. Tried nomodeset and everything i could find between here and google to no avail.

cant get past that load screen. Ive been lurking on the forum for days and finally got fed up enough to post this because im fresh and have no clue what im doing when it comes to this. all i know is i want something better than windows(lol) and Ubuntu seems like its right up my alley...user, my "skills" if you will, are better than most, but Linux.its like trying to reed Greek for me.Also, computer specs...Toshiba A505-S6025 4gb Memory Nvidia GeForce 310M (from what i read i will have trouble with this) Realtek RTL8191SE wlan (also will have problems with this)

EDIT: just ran live cd with virtual box and it started the demo of Ubuntu with no problem with no options(like nomodeset) checked off... apparently i think im doing something wrong when it comes to booting the other way...

Ubuntu :: Create My Own Live Disk / Install That?

Jul 2, 2010

I'm running a Lucid Wubi system and I just got everything exactly the way I like it. My brother was having a hard time with Windows and I recommended Linux. Well being the inpatient person he is, he wasn't impressed with it "right out the box". But he's seen my setup and still wants to give it a shot. So I was curious if there was a way to create a Live CD from the way I have it already instead of downloading the "start-up" version from the site? I think they call them distros but I'm not for sure. This would be great I think to help introduce my brother and others to this awesome OS, and plus when I mess with the wrong things(which I have, and will again) I could re-install it from where I was instead of having to redo everything.

Debian Installation :: Install Live To A 4 GB Flash Drive?

Apr 12, 2011

I am trying to install Debian Live to a 4 GB flash drive. I am using UNetBootin to extract this (debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso) file to a FAT32 partition on my flash drive. It installs fine, and shows me the SysLinux menu fine, but when i choose live(or anything else) it says"Invalid or Corrupt Kernel Image". I also tryed these other installers. pendrivelinux's Universal USB Installer. It gives me the same message. win32diskimager gives me a different Debian menu, but the same problem. Does anyone know what is wrong, and how to fix it. It is driving me nuts!

Ubuntu Installation :: Clean Re-install - Live Disk Not Recognized In GRUB?

Apr 18, 2011

I have an old HP PC with 2 drives: Primary (C = 20GB) and a slave (E = 60GB). I have Windows XP Pro OS (which I want to completely replace with Ubuntu). Ubuntu 10.10 is installed on E as a side-by-side (with XP on C). I am done testing Ubuntu and now want to completely replace the XP OS.Ubuntu is installed on E-drive as a partition. ISSUE: When I log on the PC goes directly to the GRUB menu but I get no option to boot from the Live Disk 10.10 during the boot-up.

HISTORY: I have tried (unsuccessfully) to remove Ubuntu from my E-drive by use of the uninstall function from Windows control panel. I have also tried to remove it using the manage/Disk Management process but the "Format" and "Delete" options are unavailable (grayed out) so cannot use that. I would like to do a complete clean up and fresh install of Ubuntu as my only OS.I have read and tried a number of internet articles / recommendations about opening BIOS and redirecting the start-up to the disk, but I do not get any option or any time during the boot to do that.

QUESTIONS:
1) How can I get my HP PC to boot from (recognize) the Ubuntu Live Disk (CD)?

2) Would a complete removal and clean reinstallation be a better approach?

3) And how can I remove Ubuntu from the partition on E (as I want to dedicate the C-drive exclusively for Ubuntu)?

This is my first post so please be patient. I am unfamiliar with this part of the installation process.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Mount CD Floppy Or USB Flash Disk

Jul 22, 2010

The system is 11.1 32 bit and used to work ok

All the drives function and mount normally under Parted Magic.

Sometimes a cd will mount after 15 mins or so but if it is ejected it will not remount. after that event the dmesg output is 3 times as long. As it is 35K chrs long it is too long to post!

I have changed hardware and cables with no effect.

I have run the repair option on the install disk. I get a cannot find floppy error

It also reports cups, hal, ntp & postfix as errors but if I select repair it still returns the same next time I run the repair routine.

It also says the bootloader is faulty if I select repair I go into an infinite loop so I exit with skip. Anyway the system boots ok and runs just fine apart from the cd/fdd/usb problem

Fedora Installation :: Disk Boot Failure After Fresh Install From Live CD.12?

Feb 15, 2010

I've run the install to hard drive program three times over and each time I get "disk boot failure". I believe I've got Grub to install to the mbr but I am not sure.

System:
Barton 3200+ with 1GB of DDR1
Asus A7V333
High Point hard disk controller

other items

All the hard drives are hooked to the High Point controller. It recognizes all of them that have power hooked up and read/writes to them. Two have 98SE installs, the third is where I'm trying to install Fedora 12 to get away from some problems I'm having with 98SE.

The BIOS is set up to boot from the "SCSI device" which means it's booting from the High Point controller. The High Point lets me set a boot mark, which, when set to the Fedora drive, yields the disk boot failure no matter what I do to it.

Fedora Installation :: Error W/ F13 Install To HD During Copying Of Live Image To Disk

Aug 25, 2010

I'm a Linux newbie and are trying to install F13 from bootable USB onto the HD of a DELL mini netbook. I've followed the install wizard's defaults including the "Use All Space option." The install errors out at about 20% of progress during the "Copying live image to hard drive" process. The error dialog is as followed:"There was an error installing the live image to your hard drive. This could be due to bad media. Please verify your installation media..." and it comes with options to Exit installer or Retry. I have since retried and restarted several times and still came to the same error. FYI, I've initially attempted to install F13 to the HD over an existing Windows XP.

General :: Tried To Install Mint To Flash Drive / Can't Boot From Main Hard Disk

Jan 15, 2011

I wanted to install a Linux distro to a flash drive so that I can have a portable OS with all my settings, programs, etc. wherever I go. So I fired up a Linux Mint Live CD and installed Mint to the flash drive, and this seems to work OK. But now, whenever I try to boot up my system normally without the flash drive plugged in, it doesn't seem to work. It basically hangs for a bit, and then I get the following prompt:

However, when I try powering my system up when the USB is plugged into the computer, it gives me an option between using the OS installed on my USB and the OS installed on my HD. Selecting the latter, everything loads up just fine. I'm guessing that installing Mint to the flash drive somehow messed with my native Grub installation.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Install Firefox Extension If Profile Is On NTFS (NTFS-3g) Volume?

Jul 16, 2010

Reproducible with Firefox 3.6.6 (installed from Ubuntu 10.04 repository), on Dell D620, Ubuntu 10.04 Steps to reproduce:

1) start Firefox from command line "firefox -P"

2) create new Firefox profile on NTFS volume (mounted with NTFS-3g)

3) add NoScript extension (through extension manager Get Add-ons), restart Firefox as suggested

4) extension is not added to Firefox In case at step 2) profile is created on Linux volume, at 4) extension is added to firefox.I'm not 100% sure, but I think this bug is related to Firefox 3.6 update (no problems with Firefox 3.5). I did not make proper investigation, but I have feeling same problem applies to Thunderbird 3.1.This issue does not allow to share Firefox/Thunderbird profile on dual boot machine (Ubuntu/WindowsXP).

Fedora Installation :: FC 11 Live Installer Wiped Out NTFS Partition

Aug 21, 2009

This is my first time using Fedora. My previous experience is from Ubuntu. However I want to give a try for Fedora so I went ahead to install it on my new computer. Problem is that Fedora Installer (Live CD) wiped out my NTFS Partition. Causing my computer unable to recover Vista from factory DVD because it lost system partition as well. I want to know if this is my error or a bug in installer.

Original partition setup:
220 GB - Vista System Partition (NTFS)
14 GB - Recovery Partition (NTFS)

First I resized system partition under Windows Management in Vista:
170 GB - System
50 GB - Unallocated
14 GB - Recovery

Using GParted from Ubuntu 9.04 Live CD, moved recovery to the left:
170 GB - System
14 GB - Recovery
50 GB - Unallocated

Rebooted into Vista, make sure everything is fine. Then put in FC 11 Live CD, using custom layout setup in partition, intended partition layout is:
170 GB - System (NTFS) - Primary sda1
14 GB - Recovery (NTFS) - Primary sda2
200 MB - /boot (ext3) - Primary sda3
sda4 - Extended Partition
45.8 GB - / (ext4) - sda5
4 GB - swap - sda6

After I check my setup and pressed enter, it returned with unable to format /boot error: -1. Restart FC installer, it tells me that my hard drive needs to be re-initialized. I clicked no and reboot. BIOS tells me that no OS is found. Attempting to recover from factory DVD failed, telling me that system partition is gone. I want to know did I do something wrong or is this a bug in FC installer.
