View 8 Replies View RelatedI Have been trying to install BitDefender on Mint 11 but without success, Would be grateful for any note my knowledge of commands is zero but have managed to get this far,
1. Downloaded BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run into the download file. In Terminal I have tried to run it using sudo sh followed by the filename but get the message it can't find the file. Have tried cd /Desktop & cd/Downloads (Mentioned in a Linux article) but still get nowhere. Also tried putting the file on the desktop, then properties, permissions, ticked the execute box but terminal is not showing up in that box.
trying to get this package to install on my machine so i can hopefully use it to scan a windows partition on this disc.I've installed the basic bitdefender common package and it went ok. But, everytime I put in the command "yum install bitdefender-scanner-gui" The install starts up properly and i give the y/n confirmation. I've tried it about 3 times now and it gives me the Dialog below. I really want to fix my vista partition, I enjoy using it and i want to keep it on this computer, although im not agaisnt linux at all, but I have other machines for that.

I have slackware on my laptop but it's pretty buggy lately, and last night it really pissed me off freezing and loosing the volume icon.So I decided to install Xubuntu over it.(Most probably it'll be Xubuntu, 11.04 or maybe Aptosid with XFCE )But - I'd like to try not to format the home partition. Now it's separated. (The partitions now are /boot, swap, / and /home.) So, I plan to:
1. Boot from the USB;
2. Delete all the hidden files and folders from the the /home. So anything that the Slackware has put and/or set - to be cleared.
3. Directly install, keeping the current partitions, but without formatting the home.
The only thing that I think of that could make some problems is that when I booted Xubuntu 10.10 on my working machine - it couldn't mount any of the hard drives? So if this happens on my laptop too.I won't manage to delete all the hidden stuff on the home.
I tried to install 10.04 but for the very first time since years I got stuck
I have an integrated intel video card, 512MB of RAM, both the "try ubuntu without installation" and the "directly install ubuntu" run for a while showing the ubuntu loading splash screen and then everything freezes and the screen comes blank.
I am currently running OpenSuse 11.2 still having problems with sound, CD-burning and the like being a total newbie. But I am also a very curious person.
So my questions are: Is it
a) advisable to upgrade to the latest version when there are still problems to solve in the old version and after quite some work the most important functions are up and running
b) is it possible technically speaking to upgrade directly from 11.2 to 11.4 without risking too much.
I Have Simple Proplem I Have Upuntu 9.10 And I Need to Update this vesion to 10.10 Direct is there a way to do this
View 1 Replies View RelatedI wrote a script which will run in ubuntu box and will display in tty1, without loading the gdm. The problem is when I plugged in a usb drive it will cause some messages to be printed into the current tty user logged in.
Like : [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
This is really disturbing when a user is running the script. Is there anyway that I can direct all the messages to some other tty which I don't use.
I'm in the process of building a PC to run Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to use it (eventually) to with Direct TV. I just want to be able to use the PC as the DVR if possible. I'll accept the limitations, but I'm trying to do my homework to make it as easy as possible to use for my family.
I've started out with a BioStar M32 Micro ATX board and an Intel E5300 Dual Core Pentium 2.6Ghz processor, with 2Gigs of Kingston RAM. It runs pretty well, but I've got nothing installed yet (I'm dual booting with Windows Server 2003). Right now it's just in an old E Machines case with a new 500Gig toshiba SATA drive.
Is there a guide to what hardware I could get to work with Direct TV? Also, I'm not sure of what all is possible as far as integrating the two. If there is a guide, please let me know. Also, I would love to hear from anyone who is able to network or use Ubuntu with Direct TV.
Version: 11.04 (At least that's what the About Linux file tells me)
Graphics Card: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
System: Dell Netbook. Nothing remotely fancy.
After a night of trying to adjust the graphics settings to work with a reasonable game, I powered down for a few days and went hiking in the woods. Never got the game to work, but I had no problem restarting X and continuing to work. Thus, I assumed nothing was wrong. The only real change was the installation of DRIConf. Upon my return, I started up only to see my desktop background image load, and no GUI. No cursor, no Unity, nothing. When I boot up in recovery mode, GNOME seems to work perfectly fine. If I open DRIConf, though, it says that no devices can be found that are capable of direct rendering. My glxinfo output is below (clearly indicating that direct rendering is working). I assume there's a relationship between these problems. I just switched to Ubuntu a few months ago and am obviously a bit beyond my depth.

display: :1 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4

Running Ubuntu Netbook remix on a Toshiba NB500-upgraded to 2 Gigabytes RAM. Very slow opening applications via the side icons. 8-12 seconds. Is that normal for this distro?
- No 3D cube. Installed related compiz software, adjusted settings, ticked cubes etc. Not a peep.
- No direct desktop access. Only via side icons. Just find it fiddly re: using desktop and changing background via side icons.
Couple other items (MBB for one) but for another category.
./ before a command to excute it. Why can't I use direct command? What should I do so I don't have to type ./ before a command. I couldn't find any thread relating to this issue so I post it here. Could someone please explain this and tell me what to do.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a Laptop with wireless broadband connection which needs to be connected to a desktop machine so that the internet connection could be shared. Both has got Ubuntu 9.1. I don't have a router or a switch. I just need direct connection with a cross over cable.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIve just installed ubuntu on a small nettop type pc. It can connect to the internet but I want a direct network connection thru gigabit LAN using a crossover (apparently a straight cable would have been sufficient). Anyway, I have no idea where to begin. The network connection manager in Ubuntu shows Autoeth1 which is right and, if I manually set the IPv4 I can get the PCs to somehow see each other and the 7 pc to give a 'network access only' but that's it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been experiencing extensive networking problems with 10.04 and I was wondering what options there are for downgrading to a different (hopefully more stable) release. I cannot seem to get a wired connection direct from the modem. I don't know if its just me but I feel an operating system that can't do something simple like this (without extensive terminal codes and file edits etc) is not for me. Here are my system specs:
3.06 GHz E6600 Core 2 Duo
2x2GB GSKILL DDR2
MSI G41M4-F (Realtek Ethernet)
500 GB Seagate 7200
I also have a PCI NIC card Intel PWLA8391GTBLK GIGABIT 1PC I just want to connect to the internet in a hassle free manner. Is there a release of ubuntu that I can "downgrade" to that will make networking hassle free? I have previously used 8.04 on a different machine with no problems. Is downgrading from 10.04 trivial? I currently do not have any important files as this is a new build and file backup is not an issue. Is there anything I should keep in mind or be aware of before downgrading?
I just purchased a "VGA Adapter to TV S-Video RCA Out Cable for PC Video" but it isn't working. How do i get my VGA card to support direct tv out through a RCA cable?
View 2 Replies View Relatedhow to make autofa5 work [with NFS4] using [in]direct mapping but no joy so far. Firsty, this the "/etc/exports" on my NFS4 server (CentOS 5.6):
Code:
/media/exPort htpc(ro,sync,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash,fsid=0)
/media/exPort/mMusic htpc(ro,sync,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
and this what I have in there:
Code:
[root@serv03 /]# ls -l /media/exPort/mMusic
total 16
drwxrwxr-x 11 databank lhome 4096 Jun 23 21:25 iTunes

drwxrwxr-x 3 databank lhome 4096 Aug 13 2010 Streaming Radio
[code]....
But it doesn't work - neither it throws any errors in, nor does it mount the share. All I need is to mount "/mMusic" (i.e. /media/exPort/mMusic) as "serv03:/media/nMedia/mMusic" so that tree looks like this:
Code:

I use a text editor mostly for opening up and editing ascii text files that are used by the programs I write. For example, manually editing comma separated value data files.
I've been using Gedit for this, and it's been very frustrating because I started noticing new-line characters (hex 0A) were creeping into my CSV ascii data. It turns out that Gedit has an undocumented "feature" where it silently introduces a new line character at the end of any file you edit, and there is no way to turn this feature off! See this bug report. I installed GVim, and a quick test shows that GVim does the same thing.
I would like a recommendation for a more straightforward text editor, which:
1) Doesn't add extra bytes to the file (or if it does, this behavior can be turned off).
2) Allows you to force ASCII when opening a file (sometimes Gedit will make an incorrect assumption about encoding because of a stray non-printable character)
More advanced features would be nice, like regular expressions for search and replace, but I need this basic functionality first.
Is there any dictionary available for ubuntu which can be downloaded direct from site and is best as oxford dictionary.
View 1 Replies View RelatedExcuse me if such thread exists already, i carefully searched the forum so i wont create a second one concerning the following problem:So i downloaded (on my new fresh Fujitsu SIEMENS Li3710 running Vista the Ubuntu 9.04 distro.. im a complete Linux noob, but i wanted to give it a second try) so i downloaded it and burned it on the fast laptop, so there wont be any errors caused by low memory during burning I installed and then i went to the Ubuntu desktop - i had all drivers installed. Everything but Amarok sound worked, i turned off my laptop and went doing my job.. The next time i started up my laptop and went on the desktop .. a tradition is to browse the web, so i did that and i couldnt load a single page, except pages with direct IPs i had Skype working just fine and i had a friend there running SuSe and asked him for help. We identified it as a DNS problem, but because of my noobness i couldnt deal with it and i HAD TO switch back to windows, wich i regret so much.
I know that im a noob, but if i have an internet running at its best i can look at forums and resolve my other issues, so im asking for a screenshots on DNS settings so i can fix it the next time i install Ubuntu. Also! I was using cable via PPPoE (and the only terminal command i know is "sudo pppoeconf" ), now im with router, connecting my laptop directly via WI-FI, will i have the same problem and will i have to make settings so i can connect to my router? Because back then i tried to connect to wireless networks and the ones i could connect on XP/Vista/7 i simply couldnt connect on Ubuntu...I really want some real PC knowledge and to use Linux

How can we force an application which is using a direct Internet connection inherently to connect through a proxy server connection. Like redirecting the direct traffic generated to a proxy server.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to set up Ubuntu Server as a firewall in which I want to direct my internet connection through where Ubuntu Server will block, filter, and monitor anything that come into either three of my computers using the same internet connection. View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I have been struggling to make this happen for a bit and cannot figure it out. I want to communicate directly from my non-GUI Debian to my Puppy Linux PC. I have set up my Puppy PC for direct connection as per the instructions in the network wizard. I need to set up my Debian to do the same.
I have done the
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.100
netmask 255.255.255.0
in /etc/network/interfaces.
I still cannot ping the Debian machine from the Puppy one. Are there any other steps to the direct connection? (I already have the crossover cable in place)
I have also tried this with both PCs connected to a Netgear router. I CAN connect to the debian machine if it is on the router at the IP I assigned it and the Puppy PC is configured to use the router.
Is there a file I can edit or a process I can turn off? I think it's close I am just not sure what I am missing.
if somebody knows of a new software that I can install on my linux systems that would allow me to send documents from my computer to a fax machine to other offices.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI need to re-direct the output within an awk script, but not to already known, fixed filenames. The output file names depend on values of the fields. For example (the actual problem is surely more complicated), if, on a given line, the second field is DATA, the third is 1984, I would like to print some information in a file called output_DATA_1984. This could/would change in the following line of the same input file. Such things are pretty easy in bash, put I cannot do it in awk, as I can only find manual references for redirecting output to fixed filenames between double quotes.
