View 2 Replieshow can i encrypt my ENTIRE external hard drive using truecrypt?
View 2 RepliesSo what I want to do is encrypt my entire hard drive, but heres the thing.
I dual boot Ubuntu and windows 7, but I am afraid that if I use truecrypt to do the encrypting that it will wipe GRUB and not allow me to boot into any OS, is that a possibility and is there a way around it?
Installed Truecrypt onto openSUSE 11.3 (KDE) and noticed that Truecrypt needed to be started as root.Modified visudo using YAST asusername ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/truecryptHowever, when copying files from my backup drive into the Truecrypt partition, there is an access problem (couldn't remember actual error message)In Konsole , updated visudo to username ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/truecrypt Copying is allowed and working fine.Question:1. What is the difference between the above two visudo setting?2. How to updated visudo to the second setting in YAST?3. How to change the editor for visudo in konsole using nano instead of vi?

I am trying to install TrueCrypt in ubuntu 9.10 and I am having troubles. When I to extract the tar.gz that the program comes in, I get this error:
'gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now'
The file also comes with a PGP file. (tar.gz.sig.). I am not sure how to use the signature file to open the archive. Here is the site I downloaded from: [URL]
I checked out this forum but still no solution for my problem. I tried to install Truecrypt, but I can't get it fixed. I extracted truecrypt-7.0a-setup-x64 to Desktop. Then in typed in terminal: sudo sh truecrypt-7.0a-setup-x64. The terminal asks my password and I type in my password and hit enter. The terminal disappears and nothing is happening.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been looking at setting up truecrypt on my laptop, but the guides on the truecrypt site and the ubuntu documentation seems to be incomplete or not address what i want to do.
What I have:
dual boot windows 7 / Ubuntu (lucid)
What I want is to dual boot with the hidden OS system:
Windows 7 (plausable)
Ubuntu (plausable)
Ubuntu (hidden install)
Is this possible? or is it better to make a hidden /home partition?
Downloaded the 64 bit console only package, attempted to run and got this error message:truecrypt: error while loading shared libraries: libfuse.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
View 6 Replies View RelatedI used Truecrypt in Windows and it worked pretty well. I tried to install the program on Ubuntu but got some problem. Here is what I did and the problems I got:
1. I downloaded the standard 32-bit tag.gz file from [URL]
2. Extract the file onto desktop
3. Installed by double clicking and run in terminal or directly run in terminal (I assume they are equal)
4. Follow the instructions till 'Press Enter to exit'.
For me it seems that the program is installed successfully, and the icon shows up in the Application- Accessories menu. However, it doesn't respond at all when I click the icon. For most of the software I used in Windows, I have already found equivalents that are working fine. And I really don't want to go back to Windows because this program.
I work for a all-in-one IT company, basically businesses hire us and we will fix all their problems from servers to pencil sharpenersI want to get some background with UNIX so i wanted to multiboot linux on my laptop and use it for a few weeks. After a few hours of trial and error i managed to install it! So to the point: i used Truecrypt to encrypt my laptop and it used a special boot loader that made me input the password just after the post.My question is, can i use Truecrypt with a multiboot 7/ubuntu? After it took me hours to install this , running into and trouble shooting various problems that were probably just my ignorance, but Linux feels very fragile and i do not want to screw it up.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have repeatedly installed Truecrypt and Easy Crypt but they do not "See" each other nor do they Encrypt Any Folder or File.
Easycrypt keeps telling me that I do not have Truecrypt installed!?
TrueCrypt offers 3 hashes for use: RIPEMD-160, SHA-512, WHIRLPOOL.What do most people use? How does one go about deciding which one is appropriate for them? Do they differ in security or performance?

Do not mind getting my hands dirty in a terminal
my /dev/sdb was a truecrypt partition that was mounted when I accidentally deleted the partition in gparted (instead of sdc, stupid). I'm pretty sure I haven't overwritten anything since then, but I'm not sure how to go about recovering this one. To confound the problem, the only way I can install stuff to my ubunut machine is by downloading on a windows machine and transferring by memory stick.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen you are creating a TrueCrypt partition it asks what filesystem you will be using:
None
FAT
EXT2
EXT3
This is fine if you decide to create your partition on Linux but I am wondering what you would do if you wanted to create it on your XP partition and access it through the mounted drive. My XP is NTFS and that option does not appear.
Is anyone else getting a non-transparent icon in the system tray when TrueCrypt 6.3a loads on Ubuntu 10.04 with the default theme? Annoying white bars on the top and bottom of the icon. This didn't occur with the same version of TrueCrypt on previous versions of Ubuntu. Any way to resolve it? It looks out of place...
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter having encrypted my windows partition, truecrypt overwrote my mbr, and now I can't access grub during boot, not even when I press escape I was thinking of restoring my original mbr with the truecrypt rescue cd, boot into ubuntu and copy the mbr to the ubuntu partition, how to do it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI use truecrypt to encrypt a file containing my sensitive data (credit card numbers, bank account info, etc).
When I mount my encrypted file through truecrypt, I enter the password for my file. That's OK - I want to keep it that way. But when it gets mounted as a file system, ubuntu also requires that I enter the 'su' password.
How do I get around this?
I run ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid)
i want to use this line:
[code]...
to mount my volume at start up. it prompts for my truecrypt password(TCP) to open my files. so far i can put it in in the "Startup applications" but it needs root rights.. so it prompts for my root password and then again for my TCP. id like it to only ask for my TCP. i tried just putting the command and then also putting the command in a bash script and calling it from there.
I downloaded TruCrypt but can't get it to launch.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Natty 64 bit and cannot install Truecrypt 7.0. I downloaded the tar.gz from [URL] and have tried to install it several times, all without success. I've tried to install it via terminal by running
[Code]...
Each time it goes through the normal steps of having me accept the user agreement and the popup which tells you to run the "truecrypt.uninstall.sh" script to uninstall. The problem is that each time when I click 'ok' at the last step, my desktop environment freezes. I'm running unity 3d. The terminal I started the install process in doesn't produce any output.
Sometimes when the freeze occurs I can still move my mouse, but none of the menus or windows will respond. Other times the mouse will be frozen as well or it will just log me off. I haven't found anyone else talking about this issue and I honestly don't know where to start looking for a way to fix it.
I successfully created a TrueCrypt volume and mounted it and put some files there.
Then I tried to unmount and just could not.
I can still see the files when I go to /media/truecrypt1.
With the gpg command I used to encrypt files so they saved as plain text (the encrypted files were viewable in a plain text editor though were a encrypted nightmare)
I just forget the option in the gpg command to do this and I can't find it in a hurry either in the man file
I'm currently writing a simple script which uses luckyBackup to backup my /home directory to /tmp. I then want to tar it, encrypt it with gpg and move it onto a usb stick. My question is that suppose my hard disk died and I needed to restore from this USB backup, would I still be able to decrypt the file given that I would have lost gpg keys etc when the disk died? (I would still know the passphrase though). Should I be backing up gpg files separately?

View 9 Replies View Relatedhave been trying for many hours to install Ubuntu 9.10, on a system that already had 9.10 installed on it at one point (so I know it should work!) I am using an alternate install, from a USB thumb drive. I use the alternate so I can encrypt the hd. Everything goes smoothly until I am to select extra packages to be installed. The only package I select is the ubuntu-desktop, and around 80% progress, or so, it fails. I then try and complete the base install, and then login to the command prompt and install there:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktopIt then requests the Ubuntu disc, which of course I don't have. It has a landline internet connection. Do I need to configure something to tell it to look to the mirrors to find the desktop? Or, should it have been included in my iso image originally
I use this line to line to archive and password protect my files (with zero compression):7z a -p -t7z -mx0 ~/Documents.7z ~/Documents In the attached picture, I notice there is a check box to 'Encrypt the file list too' via the GUI 7z method. How could I add this option to the above 7z line?
Also I think rar allows you to 'Encrypt the file list too'. Could someone also give me a rar line similar to 7z a -p -t7z -mx0 ~/Documents.7z ~/Documents but that has the 'Encrypt the file list too' feature added?
I just bought a new Kingston DataTravler G2 16GB usb drive and was wondering if it was possible to encrypt the entire device. As in, it would require a password before even seeing any files. If possible I'd like something that works on all OS's but if not any suggestions would be great.
