So what I want to do is encrypt my entire hard drive, but heres the thing.
I dual boot Ubuntu and windows 7, but I am afraid that if I use truecrypt to do the encrypting that it will wipe GRUB and not allow me to boot into any OS, is that a possibility and is there a way around it?

I'll be placing sensitive data on the drive & need to figure out how to encrypt it. From what i've read so far, the easiest way will be to encrypt the swap, /home, tmp, temp files. Not quite sure how to do this. I'd prefer to encrypt the whole drive, but this seems quite complicated.

I want to automatically mount my flash drive encrypted by Truecrypt using a keyfile whenever I plug the drive. How can I do this? I use Ubuntu 10.10.

As I do not know the answer of my first question, I currently use following command in a startup script to mount my encrypted flash drive automatically at every system start-up.

My problem with this method is, Truecrypt always search for the drive in the same path saved in favorite drives list, e.g. /dev/sdb1. However sometimes there are more than one flash drive plugged to my computer and my encrypted drive's path changes. In such cases Truecrypt cannot mount my encrypted drive because it cannot find the drive in its path.
As a workaround I tried "auto-mount=devices" parameter. It is slow because it checks every mounted drive, and some of them external hard disk big in size. Moreover it does not recognize any mount point parameter. I'd like to mount the drive to the same mount point every time.

The command above mounts the drive however it is slow and to the destination of "/media/treucrypt1".
Now since 1TB 2,5" hard drives have been released and are payable I've thought about buying one. The most improtant issue for me when using a protable drive is security and data security. I found the "Western Digital My Passport Essential" with hardware encryption but the description says that only Windows and MAC operating systems are supported not Linux in anyway. My question is are there any significant diffetences between the WD hardware decryption or a truecrypt container/drive? And is there another program out there better for this job? I want to use the drive on Windows and Linux systems.

First, I'd like to fill the drive with random data. I've read the fedora documentation and it suggests using the following command: dd if=/dev/urandom of=<device>. The installer didn't offer an opportunity to do this, so I opened a terminal and typed the command. I expected it to take hours on my 160 gig hard drive, but it only took about 3 minutes, and indicated about 600 megs of data had been written. Did I do it correctly? According to palimpsest, my boot partition is sda1 and the other partition is sda2, so that's the one ran the command with.
Second, I need some advice on what to encrypt. The installer shows me the following layout after I select encryption:
LVM Volume Groups
Hard Drives
I know I can't encrypt boot, but I can encrypt lv_root and lv_swap. But is it necessary to do that? And tell me the pros and cons of using a boot loader password?
I encrypted my hard drive on my media PC but it's really annoying having to type in a password every time I turn it on. I chose a short password so it was quick and easy to type in but is it worth encrypting data with a weak password?If the computer is suspended, someone could come along and resume the computer. They would be presented with a locked GNOME session) but the data would be unencrypted; does this go against encrypting the hard drive? For the first few days my external hard drive was working fine, but then eventually it wouldn't let me copy/move/delete stuff to and from it. I encrypted my whole home directory and know the password, but how do I "decrypt" it or login as the partition's root so I can access the documents that way. I'm booted into the USB, but can't access the home directory. I get "You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'jake'".

What i would like to do is back up all these systems to an external hard-drive using rsync when the external usb disk is connected to my Ubuntu box.If i format the external usb disk with cfdisk and the create a non-bootable ext3 file system on this external disk and create and put all the necessary public keys on the Linux box then from the BSD's or the mac issue the command:

After a few hours of trial and error i managed to install it! So to the point: i used Truecrypt to encrypt my laptop and it used a special boot loader that made me input the password just after the post.My question is, can i use Truecrypt with a multiboot 7/ubuntu? After it took me hours to install this , running into and trouble shooting various problems that were probably just my ignorance, but Linux feels very fragile and i do not want to screw it up.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been running Linux for a year on our family computers (one desktop, one laptop and two netbooks). I've run into a problem with the encrypted ext4 partition (270GB) on a LaCie external hard drive which also has a NTFS partition (50GB) which is not encrypted . First two times I tried using the encrypted ext4 partition (from two different computers) it worked fine but now I can't access it at all. I can still access the NTFS partition.Encrypted external hard drive partition will unlock but won't mount (or unmount). The computer says "Opening 320GB Hard Disk" but after a minute says, "Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply"Disk utility (GUI for gparted I believe) states that the encrypted partition (/dev/sdb1) is unlocked and the underlying partition (/dev/dm-0) is not mounted but it has a "busy circle sign" on it that will not turn off. The NTFS partition on the same drive mounts and accesses normally.
But if I try to unmount the NTFS partition, it says: "Unable to stop drive. One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb"If I try to shut down the computer, it is unable to shut down because (I assume) it can't shut down that drive either. So I have to just turn off the computer.fdisk states that /dev/dm-0 doesn't have a valid partition table [full output attached]fsck suggests: "Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?"ps axuf shows some processes running on /dev/dm-0 but killinghem doesn't release the drive either. [full output attached]I checked /etc/blkid.tab (suggested in one vaguely related thread) and there's no actual file only a broken link pointing to /dev/.blkid.tab (which doesn't exist). I tried deleting this link and rebooting but that didn't change anything.when I finally gave up my data as lost, I tried to format the partition (using Disk Utility) and it refused saying, "One or more block devices are holding /dev/sdb"
I'm currently writing a simple script which uses luckyBackup to backup my /home directory to /tmp. I then want to tar it, encrypt it with gpg and move it onto a usb stick. My question is that suppose my hard disk died and I needed to restore from this USB backup, would I still be able to decrypt the file given that I would have lost gpg keys etc when the disk died? (I would still know the passphrase though). Should I be backing up gpg files separately?

This is fine if you decide to create your partition on Linux but I am wondering what you would do if you wanted to create it on your XP partition and access it through the mounted drive. My XP is NTFS and that option does not appear.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a few hard disks fully encrypted with Truecrypt. They have not been partitioned, just encoded right of the bat with Truecrypt. I just use Truecrypt command line to mount them, supplying password whe asked.
So from a linux standpoint, they show up as disks with unallocated space.
But I recently updated (moved) my linux from Ubuntu to Kubuntu. In the process, the partition manager asked where to install the new OS, I answered erase existing system and install there. But I noticed too late that the install program decided to install GRUB on another disk, one of my encrypted disks, instead of the system disk already selected. I don't know why, but it did. Now this disk shows up in linux as a disk with multiple partitions, and of course I can no longer mount it with Truecrypt.
I haven't done anything with the disk, except from trying to mount it in Truecrypt. So apart from the GRUB install, nothing else was touched on the disk.
I know Truecrypt place a backup header towards the end of the encrypted disk, so it should still be there intact, but since I now have multiple partitions, Truecrypt is certainly confused and cannot see the end of the disk since I now have 4 of them (partitions).
I am not a beginner but I am hesitant to attempt something that could kill all hopes of recovering the disk. It is a 2TB disk with a lot of data on it. I could probably make a copy of the entire disk but this means buying another 2TB disk....
One of the first idea was to kill the current partition setup to leave it "unpartitionned", so like it was before, maybe Truecrypt will now find the backup header. But before I do so, I would like opinion of real experts on linux.
Since August of 2009 I have been under attack by corporate Black Hats. I found a 105GB FAT16 Hidden partition on my hard drive. Seventy four percent full (78GB). What led me to this was the fact that I couldn't help but notice that my Internet connection was a revolving door that never stopped spinning. So I went looking for why.
I removed the hidden flag, and patched the partition, but couldn't open that thing no matter what I did. I tried for a month. The attacks started as soon as I stopped these guys from accessing that data. At this point we are 9 months into 24/7 attacks. I have interviewed with the FBI, and local law enforcement, but they are intent on making me out to be a conspiracy nut. I am not at all. All they wanted to do is quiz me on my computer skills. If I managed to draw the attention of a corporate security group they killed it.
