i have centos 5.9 running on my server and i have to take backup of my entire data from the different server.This one I want to make it as backup server. I need few informations about the tap drive

I have already found bacula but it seems to big for my purpose. I need an easy and automatic software.

I am setting up a tape drive back up, but I am having "fun" with bacula configuration. Basically the drive is working , I ran the test with the btape program and all was correct. I am basically meddled up with the jargon and the very large bacula documentation. I created some 2 volumes and gave the mounted the tapedrive (labeled) the name of one of them "tapevol2" .... now I can not relabel the tape, I deleted the volume "tapevol2" but still the tape drive is mounted with that name, even though the volume is deleted. If I add ( create more volumes) I can not make the tape to mount with anything different that "tapevol2". I would like to go back to zero and delete all volumes, and mount the tape with one of the newly created volumes, so the jobs back up can run.

Do I simply just connect plug it into the server,and I should be able to backup/transfer data to the tape drive? Or are there intermediate steps before I can do that. we have a server that runs a backup (cron job) at 9:15 every night. When I log on in the morning I have mail message that gives me a long list of all the files that were backed up the night before. For a couple of weeks now, the mail message gives me an empty list. Yet, when I run the same job manually from a #prompt, it runs. I am not able to run this job with cron in the daytime because too many users are in it. I wanted to browse the tape to see if the backup is really failing to copy the files or if they are on the tape and the mail message is bogus.
Since the backkup was done with cpio instead of tar, I'm not sure if I can browse the tape with restore -i anyway.What would be the best way to browse the tape on /dev/rmt/1 without actually restoring anything ?This is an ancient DGUX system, not Linux, and I'm not a unix expert I just inherited this server recently, but a lot of things are very similar to Linux and it looked like this might be a good place to ask.
I have been using an LTO-5 Ultrium-3000 tape drive connected to an ATTO HBA without problem. I can control the tape drive using "mt -f /dev/nst0" and have been able to make successful backups using cpio, tar, and dump/restore. I followed some instructions on the web about how to install the HPE Library and Tape Tools application (version 4.21) which relies on conversion of a rpm to a deb file. The software seems to have been installed correctly and runs. However the hardware scan function does not recognize my tape drive. The following is suggested in the user manual if the tape device is not recognized by the software under Linux:
1. Login as root.
2. Edit the following file:
vi /etc/modules.conf
3. Add the following line as appropriate:
add options scsi_mod max_scsi_luns=128
4. Reboot the computer.
The problem is I don't have an /etc/modules.conf and am not sure exactly which file would be equivalent? If this is even the correct solution.
My tape drive is controllable and functions well using "mt -f /dev/nst0 status" so it seems to be a matter of LT&T software to detect the tape drive.

I am looking at getting a DLT drive for my network; however, I have never used the tar command with a tape drive. What happens if the data is larger then 1 tape? Does the tar application automatically span tapes or do I need to use switches so it spans multipule tapes? Right now my Full backup will take 2 or 3 tapes.

i tried to do a listing of the contents backedup on tape and it got struck in middle throwing below error,
/dev/st0:device input/output error. after which i was unable to eject the tape using
mt -f /dev/st0 rewoffl
i removed the tape by holding the eject button and now when i try to insert another tape, it's unable to take the tape in to tape drive...
I've tried doing all except reeboting the server, can any one help me out in this issue, hope the blow information may help in debugging the issue... code....

Recently, the data that we are backing up has grown too large to fit on the tapes in their 200GB uncompressed capacity. I have been looking around for a way to enable the compression in the drive, but I haven't found much. I am not using any backup software, so I'm not sure if I'll even be able to. I write the tape using a simple 'tar' command, so there aren't a whole lot of options to be set. Is there a way that I can enable the drive's compression, or would I be better off running the tar command with the gzip or bzip flags?

I haven't used tape drives in Linux previously; however I'm trying to figure out how to enable an LTO-4 tape drives built in encryption. Im not that concerned with secure key management, I am looking to just being able to load a key into the drive and get the tape to encrypt. Im for a simple command, but I dont even know where to start. If it varies by device, its an HP Ultrium 4 (1760).

View 3 Replies View RelatedCurrently I have bacula backing up the contents of my server on a daily basis (Mon-Fri) on to a tape. There are in total 9 backup tapes so far. One for each day of the week (Mon-Thurs) and one for every Friday in the month (so there are 5 friday tapes). The tapes are all from the same pool and once the tapes are full they should then get recycled. As I understand and from what I have seen, the data from my server backups up to the tape and is then marked with the append status. Every time that tape is used, data is then appended onto the tape until the tape is full. At this point it is marked as full but wont be recycled until all the tapes from the pool are marked as full (so until all 9 tapes are full).
My question is, is there a way of overwriting the data on the next backup on the tape, rather than appending or requiring that all tapes in a pool are full before a tape can be recycled. As the mon-thurs tapes currently cant be recycled until all the Friday tapes have been used. The reason why I dont have seperate pools for the Friday backups and the other days of the week or even seperate pools for each day of the week, is that if a tape is accidently not changed or someone puts in the incorrect tape by accident a backup will still occur. Which is better than no backup!
I have s script that standard users use to back up usb drives to lto4 tapes.it asks for a JobNumber and sends an email upon success.I recently expanded it to use Multiple tapes.my specific Q is if the system reaches the end of the tape it happily mentions in the terminal that one needs to put in a second tape.what i would like to do is send an email that --It needs a second tape.( it presently sends an email upon successful compleation - so you see the only way a person knows that they need a second tape is if they

2-- they do not get a completion emails and the think to walk to the basement and see the request for a second tape.

I currently have a centos 4.4 I believe running with a 250GB hard drive. I want to make an image of that hard drive. I have tried removing the drive and connecting it to my windows pc using an adapter that would allow my windows machine run the hard drive as it was a regular external hard drive. Of course windows doesn't reconize that drive since it is linux partitioned. I am thinking that I need to have the hard drive inthe box I am wanting to copy and put in a blank drive in the box that I want to copy to. And boot from a live CD and use cat or dd to copy it. I have seen the commands before bust I am thinking this is the only way. Basically I am wanting to have a duplicate of the drive and build a whole new server that is already all setup.I will just change the host name and assign it another Public facing UP. Is this correct? Oh, and the new server will have different hardware. Might even be AMD or intel different from source or destination.

gives me an IOCTRL error. I've googled the error code and haven't come up with a viable fix. Thus far, the only way I've been able to check which files are on the tape is:

Of course, without getting the actual directories on the tape in the first place, the only files I've been able to transfer at this point are just singular files within the directories as opposed to the entire directories themselves.

I have a hospital application written using a database called MSE. Now the provider of this application says they will only support tape because of the fact that this system is using a specialized backup system. Basically the data is housed on raw_data blocks. So what I am looking to do is create a way to USE the SAN to present the server with Hard Drives and be mounted as if it was a tape. Has anyone tried to do something like this before? If so how did you configure that. One solution that I thought would be to just Present a 2TB lun and carve up several partitions cut not create filesystems on them. Then just create a symlink everynight /dev/rmt0 and rotate out the partitions.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a headless ubuntu server (10.04 x64) in the attic that I use as mostly as a file server for media streaming and backing up other PCs on the home network. The box doesn't have a display, keyboard or mouse connected and is in a location where it's physically difficult to get at.
I'm mostly looking at a solution to protect the system if it were physically stolen(hopefully this is very unlikely) so that I could have a reasonable confidence that no one could boot a live CD and steal any private documents on there.
I don't feel like I need to encrypt the root file system (and I don't want to reinstall!) as most of the data on the system isn't sensitive (MP3s, video files etc).
I would like to protect the backups of the other systems as they have some personal documents etc on them,
I need to also balance this with convenience as I need the backups to continue to be automatic or they most likely won't get done at all.
Currently I have a samba share called "backup" that is password protected and points to /media/backup where a 2tb drive is mounted, this drive is used just for backups from the other systems so I would like to encrypt the whole drive.
I realise that I can't have the drive mount completely automatically as it will then be accessible to anyone who can boot the box. The compromise I would like would be that the drive is encrypted and then either:
1.) I log in via ssh and enter a command to mount the drive which prompts for a passphrase - drive stays mounted after I log out until manually unmounted or the system is rebooted
or
2.) On boot something runs automatically which then prompts me for the passphrase when I next connect via ssh - again the drive stays mounted after I log out until manually unmounted or the system is rebooted
I would prefer 2 as then I am less likely to forget to mount the drive after a reboot.
I have seen several tutorials using LUKS to encrypt the drive and manually mount but am wondering if it's possible to achieve 2. Also wondering if there are any implications for samba if the drive is not available straight away at boot, would I need to restart anything after mounting the encrypted drive for example?
