I faced such problem recently:I have a folder results and in this folder I have set of folders named:
1050.2000
1050.4000
1098.8000
1100.0000
in each of this folders there is file: (1_d)wu_z.I need to write a bash script which would change the name of this file (in every folder) to: wu_z.The main problem here seems to be, how to "decrease/change" the folder name by 0.2000 in the loop...
I've just read that I can't change the file permissions of files and folders if they are sitting in what was my old Windows D: drive. Is this correct? If so what is the work-around?
I don't want to have to cut and paste that entire D: drive's contents over to a recognised Ubuntu folder. I had in my mind that this D drive would continue to be my data dumping ground, to which I need read/write access to.

I've been using Ubuntu for over 5 years. This time I decided to upgrade UNR to the latest 10.10. I am now running it from USB to try it before installing. Excuse my ignorance, but whatever happened to the Terminal? I cannot find it anywhere! I think this release is not going in the right direction if one of the most important tools in Ubuntu is hidden from an average user.
Also, how do I change to the root directory in the files and folders? or at least to the higher directory structure.I won't be installing UNR 10.10 unless I figure out these BASIC things.
I can create folders in partition but i cant share them or change their ownership And here my fstab and fdisk list.About my hdds, on first hdd i have win installation as 3 partition and on second hdd, my lovely ubuntu and ntfs partition to use as shared in my LAN

Many folders within a subdirectory some of which have lots of data in and some of which have only one specific file called produkt.fil inside.I need a command to find and delete those folders that contain ONLY the file produkt.fil - if other files exist (doesnt matter what they are) then they should be left alone. Note: produkt.fil exists in all of the folders always.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm a new openSUSE user. I want to make an account for my cousin, but we want our NTFS folders (from the dual WIndows XP install) inaccessible to each other. Problem is that, if I've read well in other searches, permissions can't be applied to NTFS (only the power to write, not only read, the whole partition). I know this can be done in Ubuntu, so I don't find a reason not to be able to do it, and I think my fault is that I'm using KDE (which I like more now, by the way) instead of GNOME.

I want to change all the files that containts TEXT15 and change it to TEXT16. This actually works for files in a folder but not recursively in all the entire files....perl -pi -c 's/TEXT15/TEXT16/g' ./* but I have many subfolders and within this more subsub folders....i just want to do this recursively.

It works great except for one thing: When I open Dolphin in superuser mode and change the permissions to make myself the owner of those folders, the change doesn't take. No.1 I would like to change the HORRIBLE!! YAK!! brown background color behind the word Ubuntu in the start up screen when the machine loads up (before the login). I have located the image file for this which I have found to be: /usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600. jpg but the OS says that root is the owner and that I don't have permission to change this. So how can I change this for a color I do like.
No.2 I would also like to change the login dialogue screen style. I know this is possible but again I'm fumbling to see how I can do this. I have tried with the start up manager but every attempt fails, the settings don't take. Once again I suspect permissions are at the bottom of the problem?
No.3 Would like to have a colorful splash screen image on boot up, I've managed to remove the old one (small white 3 ring ubuntu logo on black background) but havent been able to install or replace with a new one. Its been incredibly frustrating, I'm feel sure I'm missing something simple here. Wondering if its permissions yet again?
Anyone who can offer help on any of the above, guidance or advise me would be much appreciated. Please bear in mind that I'm still very much feeling my way with Linux so keep it simple.
Is there a way that I can download either a new folder management system for Ubuntu Karmic or at least customize the current one so it works better? I don't like when I'm trying to find a certain file such as a .mp3 and I can't sort it by the name of the artist or the name of the show? I know that the actual MP3 file as the meta data embedded into the file but with Ubuntu Karmic I can't seem to set it so it will display in the List Columns. When I tried to go to List columns to change the preferences it only gives me limited options of what I can display and most of them our useless such as MIME type, Octal Permissions, SELinux context, etc.. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have set up a dual boot system with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10. I have upgraded Ubuntu to the most current version available online. I'm unable to create folders or subfolders in the Linux file system. I have researched the manual and my Unbuntu Linux book and see that I should be able to click on 'File' from the menu, then 'Create Folder', and then input the new folder name, but the 'Create Folder' selection is 'grayed' out which I conclude means that it is set on inactive and unable to be used. I am able to access my Windows disk by mounting and then typing in my password, so I have Administrator privileges.
I'm able to create a new folder in Unbuntu Linux for my Windows (NTFS) files. When I installed Unbuntu, I did not see any options to have write access to the Ubuntu file system. I can create new files within the existing folders. Soon after working out my Linux problems, I will be using PHP/MySQL/Apache to do some important work, so I will need to be able to create new folders and subfolders in my Linux system. I have some urgent tasks I need to do away from my PC soon, so I will be a while before getting back to this.
I'm using ubuntu for a few weeks now and i created a backup script that can copy some folders into a .tgz file. Now i want to place back the folders to where they come from and overwrite the original folder. like the /home folder in the .tgz file overwrite the /home folder on my harddrive. I already tried to do this with: tar xvpfz filename.tgz. But after that the folders came in the same folders as the backupfile stands.
How can i do this the right way?
Currently I am doing a java project and I renamed some file/folders to start with '.'. i.e. ".project", ".classpath", ".settings/"
I can see them on my desktop but i cannot delete them. In the terminal, "ls" command does not show these files exist. "rm" will also say cannot find these files. How do I get rid of these files/folders?
Based on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, Linux 2.6.32, Gnome 2.30 and Xorg 7.4, Linux Mint 9 "Isadora" features a lot of improvements and the latest software from the Open Source World. anyways, I just done a fresh install and I cannot create no folders in my own file system, anywhere? View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to upload a photo to craigslist from a NAS drive on my network but when I go to choose the file, the network resources are not listed in the file tree. Or maybe I am not looking in the right place? Take a look at the attached. This is what I see, but there should be something on the left pane that says "Network" so that you can access your workgroup shares.
I also attached a screenshot from my "files & folders" menu which clearly shows such a "network" option in the file tree. How come it's in one place and not the other?

However, since some people will not be able to store those folders outside of the "public_html" folder, I am looking to put a blank "index.php" inside of every folder within that section of the application. To make things easier, I would like to know if there might be a way to recursively copy one file into every folder in a certain location.
In other words, is there a command that might do something like:

Basically, I want every directory inside of "source-files" to get a copy of "index.php". The directory hierarchy within "source-files" can go at least three or four levels deep, so the command would need to be recursive. I am looking for a command-line statement that I can type to perform this action.

I had a major raid event recently which caused my Ubuntu 9.04 server to recover part of its file journal on the system partition. This caused some of the file permissions to go all funny and I now need to change them manually.
What the file permissions should for the following folders:
/etc/
/home/
/lost+found/
/mnt/
/root/
/sbin/
/srv/
/tmp/
The server is running and I fixed the some of the ownership issues already. I use a basic LAMP setup with samba, and proftp.
With Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 I have seen that the nautilus filemanager is extremely slow with folders that contains many files or/and folders.I made sure that "Assistive Technologies" is diable. On the filemanager preference I set all preview to "Never", tried all possible views, but the filemanager remains extremely slow. It seems like it becomes even slower when the subfolders in the folder you are viewing new files are being created by for example a program. Possibly nautilus filemanager is updating continuously ?
I use to be using debian etch nautilus file manager. With the same directories, nautilus in debain etch was working much faster. But contrary to the one in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 is is far less stable. It seems like the newer version is more stable but however extremely much slower. I was wondering if I am missing something. Or whether this is a bug. If it is a bug, then I am wondering when this is going to be solved in nautlius filemanager.
It functions perfectly well, but the Files & Folders object has as a feature a 'recent' section which displays recently opened files. This is much the same as a menu object available in Gnome, except with the latter you could clear recent files for security or privacy purposes - you cannot do this in Unit.I have found that if you drag a file from the 'recent' section in the Unity Files & Folders object to Trash it doesn't just delete the shortcut - it deletes the target as well.
It is not at all clear if and how you can configure the File & Folders and the Applications objects to display what you want rather than the default, and the inability to quickly and safely clear recently opened items is something I think is in need of a fix.
Anyway my actual problem is to change my pictures, download and music folders, since my files are in another HDD partition; I can make it with Ubuntu Tweak, but at the first reboot folders are resetted. Which is the problem? Does this application conflicts with another one (as "compiz fusion icon")?

I've been enjoying using Rhythmbox to rip a stack of CDs. Initially I had problems getting it to recognise Lame but following uninstalling and reinstalling it, it seemed to be working well. That is, until I looked in my Music folder.
It turns out files have been placed in individual folders, named "number - title.udio" (e.g.: "11 - She Can Do What She Wants.udio". The mp3 file itself is named identically throughout - it's the string for the gstreamer settings, i.e. "x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc preset=1002 ! xingmux ! id3v2muxmp3".
The settings within Rhythmbox's properties for folder and file naming are all set to the sensible default. This is a pain. In the short term I'm going to try EasyTAG to sort it out, but ultimately I need to sort this or find alternative software.
