Fedora :: Get Rid Of Recent Documents Under Places Menu On Gnome Panel?

Oct 18, 2009

There are measures to stop this in Windows even though there are still things you can't get rid of. Now on to my question, Why can't I edit the Places menu but I can edit the Applications and System menus. I really want to get rid of the Recent Documents menu header. I don't like things like that right up on front street. I am quite a stickler about privacy and one of the reasons I decided to try out linux is because I heard it was better in the sense of respecting privacy. But now I am seeing that you don't even have the ability to get rid of a tracking item such as Recent Documents. Quite disappointing.

I can understand tracking recent changes to the system but it is not necessary to track what you open or what you browse on the internet. Hence Firfox's ability to not store history and the clear cache, history, etc. on shutdown of Firefox. So Am I misinformed about the fact that linux does respect privacy? What kind of world are we coming to that it is necessary to track everything. Especially here in the U.S., I mean I'm thinking 1984 here lol. Anyway, how to remove these tracking features in Fedora. I mean in the sense of just stopping it. It sucks to have to go through and "clear" everything that tracks you every time you want to log off or shut down.

Fedora :: Clear Recent Documents In F15 Gnome 3

Jun 5, 2011

How do I clear the list of recent documents in Fedora 15 Gnome 3? There were a few files that I've already deleted from the system, but when I search for them, they still appear under the 'Recent Documents' list. This is proving to be a bit of a privacy nightmare.

Software :: LibreOffice Forgetting Recent Documents

Apr 22, 2011

My LibreOffice has started to forget "recently opened" documents.

It will remember them for several sessions, then, when I open it, the list is empty. Rinse and repeat.

Rebooting seems to have nothing to do with it.

Sometimes it happens after a reboot. Sometimes it just happens after shutting down and restarting LO without rebooting or logging out. (I seldom logout or shutdown unless forced to by an update or by Pulse Audio fail--current uptime is almost four days.)

I do not consider this a serious problem, but I am curious as to whether anyone else has encountered it.

This has started within the last two weeks, and, so far as I know, there have been no changes to my LibreOffice since I installed the current release several months ago.

LibreOffice 3.3.0, OOO330m19 (Build:6), tag libreoffice-3.3.0.4

Edit: This is on my Dell 1545n with Ubuntu 10.10.

Ubuntu :: Places/Documents Loads Terminal Not Nautilus?

Nov 20, 2010

I was trying out bash scripts to see how to mount NetGear readyshare. I can do so using Nautilus and selecting Network but I wanted to be able to do so from a script. I don't know how it happened but when I clicked on Places/Documents it opened a terminal instead of Nautilus. This applies to all the folders in the Places menu but I can still get Nautilus by clicking Places/Computer and below.

I'm using ubuntu 10.4, nautilus 2.30.1

Ubuntu :: Mapping Windows My Documents Folder To My Documents Folders

Dec 18, 2010

I can access my windows my documentsmusic by mounting my windows drive and browsing to it. I can then playwatch my movies and pics in Ubuntu. But what I really want to be able to do is re-map the Ubunbu docs folder like so:

Ubuntu Pics = Windows My Documents pics.
Ubuntu Videos = Windows My Documents Videos.

I'm not very unix savy so I've been using Ubuntu tweak PersonalDefault Folder Locations setting and browsing to my Windows folders. But it doesn't work.I have managed to make a desktop 'short cut' and that works but I'd rather set the system wide default document folders.

Ubuntu :: Install Most Recent Flashrom On 10.04?

Mar 3, 2011

it's possible to install the most recent Flashrom (9.3) on Lucid. The problem is that in order to get the most recent you need to compile from source, however I can't seem to get all the necessary packages. With all software sources enabled, I can't find the package "pciutils-devel" in Synaptic Package Manager. Without that package I can't compile the source.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Use Touchpad After Most Recent Update

Mar 3, 2011

When I start the X server, my touchpad works for about 5-6 seconds (I'm moving it around to test). After the X server fully loads (and all the software loads in, I presume), the touchpad mouse promptly stops working. I can no longer use the GUI because the mouse is dead.

This seems to be a software bug after the latest update. Is there any way I can regress to a previous version? Perhaps uninstall the recently updated software?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Almost Unusable On Recent Pc Build?

Apr 5, 2011

I recently built a pc to run 10.04 and EMC2 from linuxcnc.org I havent even gotten to the point of trying out EMC2 on this machine because Ubuntu runs so slow. The build spec's are as follows:

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...714-CEL24-PB-R MS-6714 mobo
Intel 2.4ghz celeron processor
2x512 PC-3200 patriot ram
using integrated graphics
40gb Maxtor IDE hd

I installed using the live CD downloaded from linuxcnc.org and Ive used that same cd multiple times so I know that's not my issue. Now to my problems. The computer runs, just very very slow. Opening 2 web pages at the same time takes 2-3 minutes, and if there is a lot of pictures or content there's no point in trying. Running EMC2 works ok, but if I open a complex program in the viewer all bets are off.

Ubuntu :: Install A Recent - With An Old Kernel ?

May 5, 2010

I have a hardware not so popular, it's a VIA Nehemiah 1,5 Ghz i686 (a low power mobo). I've used it since many years ago.

This mobo seems to have kind of problems with new kernels. If I use the Linux 2.6.20-16-generic kernel or an older one everything is working well. But if I use a newer kernel it has a lot of problems. A lot of different problems and I tried to solve it many times but I couldn't.

For example, with the recent Ubuntu distro, the GUI freezes before starting the installation. If I install by terminal, the GUI freezes at the first start. If I install the server version of Ubuntu (or Debian) without X-server, it works for some minutes then it freezes. If I use a kernel just a bit newer (I don't remember which one... it was years ago) than 2.6.20-16-generic, it works for some hours, then it freezs. So, it is mandatory to use the kernel Linux 2.6.20-16-generic!

Years ago I installed Ubuntu (maybe 6.10) then I updated, more times, till Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS maintaining the old kernels. So now I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.4 with the 2.6.20-16-generic kernel and everything is working perfectly. Ubuntu 8.04 is fortunatly a LTS, so it will be supported till 04/2011, but I have to think about what to do after this date.

I don't remember well, but I think I've already tried to update from 8.04 to a recent Ubuntu (without jumping any version), maintaining my old working kernel, but I had some problems... I'm not sure, maybe will try again.

Anyway the question is: how install a recent Ubuntu (let's say 10.04) with the 2.6.20-16-generic kernel?

Possible solution:
1) Install Ubuntu 10.04 with an option which specify to use this old kernel. But I really don't know how to do it.

2) Try to install Ubuntu 10.04 with just basic service, eg. without GUI and networking. Then install (or compile and install) the old kernel there. Or compile it in another computer and then install it there.

The problem is that I had a lot of problems compiling that kernel (I tried on a Ubuntu 9.10 in a virtual machine) and i couldn't complete the compilation.

Anyway, let's forget for one moment about compilation, can I extract my current kernel from my working system and then install it on the new Ubuntu 10.04 (with basic service)?

Ubuntu Installation :: ISO File With Most Recent Updates

Jan 3, 2010

After not having used Ubuntu for a few months now, I want to make up a new LiveCD and possibly a bootable USB. The times I have done this in the past, the installations don't include recent updates which need to be downloaded and installed once the system is running. (Understandably)

Two questions:

1) Does Ubuntu update the downloadable ISO periodically to include recent updates?

...for example: Now that it is January (ie. some 3 months after release of Karmic in October '09 and some 200-300Meg+ of updates required since that time), will I be downloading an ISO from Ubuntu that has recent updates already as part of it, or will it still require updates to be downloaded and installed once Ubuntu is running on the computer?

2) If the downloadable ISO has not been updated since Oct '09, is there a way of making a LiveCD/bootable USB that has up-to-date updates already installed? (if you know what I mean?) ....and is this process relatively simple?

Ubuntu :: Recent Upgrade Requires GRUB?

May 11, 2010

When I installed lucid, I opted not to install GRUB as I leave that job to a small 'rescue' Arch Linux install somewhere else on the drive. However, some recent upgrade (I'm having difficulty figuring out which one exactly) claims to require the packages 'grub-pc' and 'grub-common'.

I'm not sure but surely this is a mistake. Right? And if so, what are my options? Does installing the packages automatically install grub (ubuntu-grub, that is) to the (insert word for that first part of the HD where the bootloader resides....?) Or will I have to manually tweak the package installation to avoid installing?

Ubuntu :: Getting Recent Flash For 64bit Lucid?

Jun 18, 2010

I've just upgraded to 64-bit Lucid and then tried to access the BBC iplayer. I got a message saying I needed a newer version of Flash, so I followed the link provided to the Adobe web site. However, there doesn't seem to be a 64-bit version available from there.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to have had this problem, but I couldn't find an obvious thread on it among the many flash-related ones, so how do I get a recent version of Flash installed in 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04? Have Adobe stopped creating 64-bit versions, or do they just not do a good job of identifying the architecture?

Ubuntu :: Grub After Recent Lucid Update?

Aug 5, 2010

I've done my due diligence, but I'm tired and frustrated so my googlefu probably isn't up to par at the moment! Been running Ubuntu as my main OS for about a year now, and have been really happy with it. So far I've been able to find solutions to every problem I've had, but I think this one's got me a bit out of my depth. I REALLY don't want to have to reinstall, I'm currently running Lucid as the only OS on this machine, and about an hour ago I installed the most recent updates as provided by the update manager. On reboot, it stopped at a GRUB command line.

I've managed to boot back into Ubuntu by manually loading the linux module etc. and booting. From there I've tried updating grub, and reinstalling grub (No errors on reinstall) but nothing persists. I've taken a quick look at the grub.cfg, but TBH I'm not sure what I'm looking for! [edit] FWIW, I have GRUB 1.981ubuntu7 installed
