I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.
I understand there is a file that stores the repositories' information, but I can't find it!Is there a way I can create a list of what applications have been installed?The idea is that if I am running a backup, finding a way to save the repository list and applications installed so if I am upgrading, or fixing a borked system by re-installing Fedora, I could copy the repo list back, and run the applications list like ode:yum install <cat apps.txt?> and get all of the applications I've installed via Yum without having to remember them all?Is there anything else, outside of /home, I should look at backing up? SELinux settings?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been using Fedora 11 x86_64 for over a year and am about to upgrade to Fedora 13 using a genuine Fedora installation CD that I got last summer at OSCON. I've made a full system backup, but before I take the plunge I want to get a list of all installed applications. I have tons of special applications installed, many of which took tweaks to get running. Just in case something breaks so badly that I have to reinstall I want to be sure I can put everything back, even if it takes me several days work.I know I have read about utilities that will generate a list of installed apps, but I can't find any.

One task is to get a list of all applications installed on our linux servers. I know I can get a list of all rpms via "rpm -qa | less" but that spits out every rpm, which is not what I want.How can I get a list of all applications installed? For example "oracle database version 10.2.0.4", yada yada.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a dead system that was running Debian Linux (lenny). I can boot into emergency mode, but nothing else. I will likely have to reinstall Debian. I've read lots of things online about how to get a list of currently installed packages. Which is fine and dandy if the system is working and I can log into it. I'm basically wanting to extract such a list from a hard drive containing an installation I can't log into normally. I can access the filesystem just fine, and nothing related to aptitude has been damaged.

While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops.One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. It takes a good minute and a half to boot to the Plasma desktop and it even seems to run faster off of the LiveCD.His system easily meets the specifications to run Kubuntu (4 gigs of RAM, decent NVIDIA graphics card) yet it slows to a crawl immediately upon booting. Does anyone know how to fix this? The hard drive is a Western Digital MyBook, 475GB model.

It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two systems, both having file systems running on LVM. System No 1 has 2 PATA HDD (40 and 80 GB) running linux on LVM. System 2 has a single SATA HDD (300 GB) which again uses LVM. What i was trying to do was to add the two HDD in system 1 to system 2, possibly with little or no data loss. So i connected the PATA drives from system 1 to system 2 and booted up. The system booted up to the openSUSE 11.3 splash screen and stopped after scanning the HDDs. Frankly i never expected openSUSE to try n auto mount the new drives. I think the problem was caused because both the systems had VG and LV of the same names. Can the volume group be renamed, maybe from a live CD or somthing?? System 2 is not boot able now.

I know this isn't Windoze, but surely there must be a way of maintaining your hard disk. I mean installs/uninstalls must leave detritus, and file moving must cause SOME fragmentation. Are there any apps, systems or methods in place that provide this functionality?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal on a External HDD (320GB Samsung S2). Worked like a charm. Bit slow to boot up and load programs, but after a while, works great. I installed it on the external HDD for one purpose: Work anywhere with Ubuntu, no matter which computer I use. I was thinking that was impossible, but I've tested thru several platforms (3 Notebooks, 2 netbooks, all Intel and one AMD Desktop). All worked flawlessly (32 Bits PAE activated and no matter how many cores are active, just works), BUT the themes.For no apparent reason, themes works on the computer I've installed Ubuntu on the HDD. It has his own Internal HDD with Windows 7 and two NTFS partitions.
Themes are stuck to the default boring-white from Gnome. I can only change the window controls. Compiz works, Wireless works, video works, sound works, filesystem works, system works - themes fail. Feels like I've hit my feet's little finger on a chair. P.S.: Ext. HDD is partitioned like this: 300GB FAT32 (it's my pop's HDD, he wants it this way), 18GB EXT4, 2GB Swap.

I've recently installed openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME When I was working on desktop settings, it locked itself, and it doesn't accept password I set during installation. I know that password is right, because it worked in YaST.
How to solve this problem without loosing any files? I haven't done backup... Is it possible to reinstall system, without formatting hard disk, and loosing files?
I have never used Linux before and know nothing about it . But my cousin installed a Fedoro linux CD on my laptop which previously had Lotus symphony . Unfortunately my laptop had single partition and so Linux overrode the old OS ,ie lotus symphony .

Here is the problem: The volume Genomes (or /genomes) is half full
sudo df -ah
/dev/mapper/home--data-Genomes
1,9T 850G 920G 49% /genomes
but the system states it as full whenever I try to add more data (tried cp and rsync). There is no quota set to the volume (I have quotas in place for users home folders. These are only for max amount of disk space, not max file number, and I am still able to move/add files elsewhere so there seems to be no interference).
I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down.
