Ubuntu :: Error: No Such Partition
Jun 4, 2010
I have a windows XP system and a ubuntu in my disk. Then i delete ubuntu with just kill the partition. After restart the system i saw the computer prompt me:
error:no such partition
grub rescue>
But that's not the all.I use WINPE and other ways for going back to my windows but the GRUB just told me the error. So i got my disk out and connected it to another computer then i format the C partition which has a windows xp.But,it is very strange. When i took my disk back to my computer and just wanning to install a new XP system, the grub error just still..i install the XP system by a usb key disk,as a reason about i do not have a CD or DVD ROM.

I installed Ubuntu as shown in the wiki and when I went to restart it gave me a lovely blinking cursor and nothing else. So I held down option, loaded into osx, reinstalled rEFIt and got my menu on startup. Unfortunately, the partition sync tool doesn't seam to be working, it gives me an error: Status: MBR partition table is invalid, partitions overlap. Error: Not Found returned from gptsync.efi

I resize my Ubuntu extended partition in Windows and now when I boot, I'm getting a GRUB rescue and the error "no such partition". I'm on a LiveUSB. Here's the results of my fdisk -l:
Code:
omitting empty partition (5)
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders[code].....
The first device is my hard drive: the second is the LiveUSB and the third is an SD card I have to move files to.I ran a fsck on my Ubuntu partition, and I can't seem to mount it (or the Windows one): it gives me the error: "Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)".How could I recover my data on both the Windows partition and the Ubuntu one?

I'm trying to install XP Sp 3 on my comp which is running Ubuntu atm. But when I tried to create a partition after I clicked "Apply" I get this error :
GParted 0.6.2 Libparted 2.3 Create Primary Partition #1 (ntfs, 74.50 GiB) on /dev/sda 00:00:01( ERROR ) create empty partition 00:00:01( ERROR )libparted messages( INFO ) Partition(s) 1, 5 on /dev/sda have been written, but we have been unable to inform the kernel of the change, probably because it/they are in use. I recently tried to uninstall Ubuntu myself using my Windows Vista Drive Manager and just deleting the entire partition and merging it with my Vista partition. All I wanted to do was rid myself of Ubuntu because I couldn't understand it. Unfortunately, now when I try to boot into Vista, all I get is "error: no such partition grub recover>" or something like that. I have no idea how to fix this since I can't get past the error into an OS. I have gotten all of my important data off the computer but I don't have a recovery disc!

ok so my Tech teacher installed Ubuntu on my laptop for me so that i could try to program with Objective-C in the terminal. It didn't work. Just the other day i tried to remove the partition to make space for other things that i needed on my computer.
I also made my Vista portion take of the part that was controller by Ubuntu. Now when i run i get a message that says
error: no such partition.
grub rescue>
IDK what to do, i have no cd to instal it again, oh yeah and in 2 and a half hours, i won't have a computer because the one that i am on now goes back to my co-op.

I currently dual boot ubuntu and win7 using a separate partition for grub and a final partition for data. I recently tried booting into the ubuntu side to find an error message that is summarized like this:Gave up waiting for root device, Reasons could be A, B, or C
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/[some really long string separated by dashes] does not exist.
Dropping to shell. My question is there an easy way to salvage this or is it better to not bother and reinstall since my data is safe?

I was and idiot and stared messing around gparted before I was ready to partition my hard drive. Consequently I messed up my partitions, and when I restarted my computer a screen comes up that reads:

Have I killed my computer or is there some way I can fix it?

I know this is a common error, but my situation is a little different than previous threads on this issue and I just want to make sure I get the correct solution.
Basically, I had Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 on my netbook and wanted to try a more lightweight version of Ubuntu. After settling on LXDE for a desktop, I decided to install Lubuntu 10.04. I chose not to install LXDE over regular Ubuntu because I wanted to eventually end up with an Ubuntu distro with either GNOME or LXDE, but not both. So rather than put myself through the hassle of uninstalling all the GNOME or LXDE packages, I decided to keep them each on separate partitions.
In the end I decided to just stick with regular Ubuntu and deleted the Lubuntu partitions. Now I get the GRUB error written in the title of this thread.

I was upgrading Ubuntu to Natty last night, but it crashed just before completion. Then, I couldn't mount the drive so I'm now booting it from the live disc. I go into gparted, but it gives me an error saying:
Can't have a partition outside the disk!
I have /root and /home in separate partitions, so I must find a way so that /home can survive. I've run testdisk and this is what I get:
Code:
Disk /dev/sda - 160 GB / 149 GiB - CHS 19458 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors
>* FAT16 >32M 0 1 1 14 254 63 240912 [DellUtility]
P FAT32 LBA 15 0 1 4192 254 63 67119570 [NO NAME]
[Code].....
There are only 2 Linux partitions, Linux and Swap, so it seems that my /home has disappeared! Is there a way to recover it? Also, how do I fix Gparted's complaint?

I have a machine with two disc but only one is involved in the boot. It is hd0 / sda. On this I have several partitions, first I have a partion (sda1) with grub-legacy and a menu.lst file that boot by chainloading my ubuntu 10.04 on partition sda4 (with ext4 and grub 2). This works without any problems. Today I was doing a larger upgrade of my mythtv install so I first copied sda4 to sda3, did all the neccessary changes in /etc/fstab and a grub-mkconfig (so that the grub.cfg on sda4 also included sda3 kernel). The chainload manage to nicely chainload to sda4 and when I select the newly copied kernel on sda3 it boots. Now inside the booted kernel/ubuntu on sda3 I again do the grub-mkconfig so I get a correct grub menu. I add a new chainload to menu.lst on sda1 so that I can go direct from that to my new partition.
when I chainload to the sda3 (hd0,2) partition I get grub-legacy error 13 invalid or unsupported executable format. No grub2 menu from sda3 shows up and the boot halts. The grub.cfg files on sda3 and sda4 are identical besides the uuid and hd0,3/4 references.

I had 3 partitions on my hard dive, Windows 7, Ubuntu, and just junk on the other. I installed Ubuntu in a way where it went to the GRUB filesystem? first, where it ask me to start in linux kernel 2.38.6 (can't really remember the kernel exact name) which was ubuntu, some other options, recovery mode, and at the very bottom was the one to go to Windows 7. I was in Windows and I wanted to get rid of my junk partition but I formatted the Ubuntu partition by mistake.
Now when it boots up it saying:
Error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue>
I hope there is a way to save my files on Windows. I tried to reinstall Windows 7 back on my computer but it wouldn't go through since the grub startup thing is the main one, not the windows one.

My Lucid LTS Ubuntu Studio 64 (amd) won't boot anymore; / and /home each are software raid 0 partitions.
I have a Multimedia partition (also ext 4) which I attempted to chmod with a GUI program (I forget what its called now) to enable all users read/write access. Looks like I inadvertantly fstabed that partition to be mounted at boot-time (normally my password was required in order to mount it).
I tried to logging out and back into my OS to see if the partition was now writable but it wasen't; instead a filesystem error was noted. I realised then that my partition was IMPROPERLY labelled and I was in a tired state and didn't remember how to rename it & rebooted to make sure all was ok. But it was not:
An error occured when mounting /media/Ubuntu unknown filesystem type "Multimedia"
mountall: mount /media/Ubuntu [1334] terminated with status 32
mountall: filesystem could not be mounted /media/Ubuntu
Boot: recovering journal
From my generic Ubuntu system on a non raid partition, I finally removed the space in the 'offending' partition: Ubuntu Multimedia to UbuntuMultimedia. And I changed the permissions for it. But if I try to boot Ubuntu Studio via recovery; booting in low res is unusable, and it gets stuck if I SKIP mounting. So I am left with manual boot or drop to a shell. I will have to use an editor like vi or nano and the command prompt. I know that I likely only have to comment out a line in /etc/fstab but I am only familiar with nautilus or gedit for this type of operation. And since this OS is on a raid partition its not 'seen' on the live CD..I would need someone to offer me clear steps to follow with the non gui editors otherwise I'm in trouble... I just wanted to use that partition for video editing and now I am locked out of my system!

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes

I've been serching the forum for hours and every thread related to "GRUB error: no such partition" that i've read relates to fixing the issue for users with windows OS also installed or trying to get windows to boot.
How it happened: I edited partitions and now I get GRUB error: no such partition. I ONLY have Linux installed.
I was able to boot the OS by typing:
Code:
set partition=(hd0,1)/boot/grub
set root=(hd0,1)
insmod normal
