Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error 13 From Chainload To New Partition

Jan 3, 2011

I have a machine with two disc but only one is involved in the boot. It is hd0 / sda. On this I have several partitions, first I have a partion (sda1) with grub-legacy and a menu.lst file that boot by chainloading my ubuntu 10.04 on partition sda4 (with ext4 and grub 2). This works without any problems. Today I was doing a larger upgrade of my mythtv install so I first copied sda4 to sda3, did all the neccessary changes in /etc/fstab and a grub-mkconfig (so that the grub.cfg on sda4 also included sda3 kernel). The chainload manage to nicely chainload to sda4 and when I select the newly copied kernel on sda3 it boots. Now inside the booted kernel/ubuntu on sda3 I again do the grub-mkconfig so I get a correct grub menu. I add a new chainload to menu.lst on sda1 so that I can go direct from that to my new partition.

when I chainload to the sda3 (hd0,2) partition I get grub-legacy error 13 invalid or unsupported executable format. No grub2 menu from sda3 shows up and the boot halts. The grub.cfg files on sda3 and sda4 are identical besides the uuid and hd0,3/4 references.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error When There Is Only One Partition Of Vista On The Computer.

Jan 16, 2011

I am running vista 64x and i partitioned unbuntu 10.10 on my computer.

I deleted the ubuntu partitioned from my computer through Vista and made it all one drive. SO now all my computer has i the recovery partition which is 9.61GB and the main Vista partition that is 287.65GB. That is ALL.

I restarted my computer and it gives me the following error:

error:

I know you have answered millions of questions about that error, however the problem i have i cant find a solution for anywhere.

Now, i have a GParted disk to manage my paritions because i have had this problem before. However when i put it in the computer it only shows my 2 partitions. (The recovery one and the vista one) Both of them are "unmounted"

How do i disable grub from loading through something like GParted that is boot loaded off a disk at system startup? I only have vista on this computer, but i cant get to it because GRUB is in the way. (I do not know if its grub1 or grub 2, but its ubuntu 10.10)

I DO NOT have a recovery disk for my vista computer, ive lost it, however i have the Windows 7 Upgrade disk, but that will not load from the disk when i turn on the computer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub: Error 17 Cannot Mount Selected Partition

Apr 19, 2011

I've tried everything to solve this, been browsing the forums for the last 2 days and no solution has worked. So I got a new netbook (Samsung n150 dated 03/2011) it had ubuntu 10.10 installed but I already use ubuntu on my macbook so I'm trying out knoppix, I booted it from usb and ran the HD installer, it gets through all that and then installs grub ok, but when I reboot I get "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition"

Things I already tried: Grub setup (grub, root (hd0,1), setup (hd0), quit) and every variation. *I tried removing the usb and setting the HDD back to first boot in the bios and then changing the menu.lst accordingly, still I get error 17. Below is the information just after boot with the usb still plugged in and set as first boot in bios.

Fedora Installation :: Grub Error 17: Cannot Mount Selected Partition

Jun 4, 2010

I dualboot Ubuntu and Fedora in one hard drive. Below are the scenario.

First, installed Ubuntu 10.4 on the entire disk (40GiB of size). Then, shrink the Ubuntu installation to equal size to free up space for fedora.

Second, installed Fedora 13 using the option "Use free space on selected drives and create default layout". After the successful installation fdisk -l shows,

Code:
# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes

Ubuntu Installation :: Locked Out Of Windows Partition With Grub - Error: No Such Device: 2e3857fb3857c08f

Apr 5, 2011

I have two partitions on my HDD. A Windows XP (hd0,2) and an Ubuntu 9.10 (hd0,1).I have been using the Windows mainly and ran a program that changes the HDD's serial number. Now when I boot up and Grub loads, I try to access the Windows partition and get the following error:

Error: No Such Device: 2e3857fb3857c08f

I am still able to boot the Ubuntu partition but can not seem to get grub to point to the Windows partition any more. This is very frustrating as I really need to get back into that partition soon.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installed Successfully But Now "error:no Such Partition, Grub Rescue"

Dec 2, 2010

I'm a complete newbie, trying to get away from Windows Vista! I had some issues installing Ubuntu, but finally got it sorted - so I thought. I wanted to view a dnl file, so tried to boot into Windows, and I got a white screen with big red letters saying "ERROR". So I held down the off button for 5 seconds, and then tried to reboot. But now all I get is the words:

error: no such partition
grub rescue>

Before I go further, I'll summarise the problem with my install. Basically it would only get partway through, if at all, and then all the options would freeze...I could move the mouse, but that was it. Similarly with running Ubuntu on the LiveCD. After a lot of hassle, and some helpful members of the community, it turned out that all I needed to do was use the option "nomodest" when installing, and it all went fine. Well actually I had to retry it again in recovery mode because I think maybe a driver wasn't loaded (?), but after that everything seemed alright. So as mentioned before, I've come to my present issue. Typing "Is" gives "Unknown command" (or maybe "invalid"...I can't remember). And if I type "set" I get something like "prefix=..." and something else...sorry I can't remember and I don't want to turn off the computer now just in case things don't work again.

Anyway I managed to boot and run Ubuntu using the LiveCD, and started looking for solutions. Note that I used the "nomodest" option again to boot. Anyway all the solutions involve first using "fdisk -l" to find the partitions. Here is the output:

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error: Unknown Filesystem And Grub Error: No Such Disc

Nov 23, 2010

I have a dual boot system with ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7. Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Error - No Such Partition Grub Rescue

Sep 28, 2010

I know this is a common error, but my situation is a little different than previous threads on this issue and I just want to make sure I get the correct solution.

Basically, I had Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 on my netbook and wanted to try a more lightweight version of Ubuntu. After settling on LXDE for a desktop, I decided to install Lubuntu 10.04. I chose not to install LXDE over regular Ubuntu because I wanted to eventually end up with an Ubuntu distro with either GNOME or LXDE, but not both. So rather than put myself through the hassle of uninstalling all the GNOME or LXDE packages, I decided to keep them each on separate partitions.

In the end I decided to just stick with regular Ubuntu and deleted the Lubuntu partitions. Now I get the GRUB error written in the title of this thread.

Ubuntu :: Formatted Partition - Grub Rescue Error

Apr 13, 2011

I had 3 partitions on my hard dive, Windows 7, Ubuntu, and just junk on the other. I installed Ubuntu in a way where it went to the GRUB filesystem? first, where it ask me to start in linux kernel 2.38.6 (can't really remember the kernel exact name) which was ubuntu, some other options, recovery mode, and at the very bottom was the one to go to Windows 7. I was in Windows and I wanted to get rid of my junk partition but I formatted the Ubuntu partition by mistake.

Now when it boots up it saying:
Error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue>
I hope there is a way to save my files on Windows. I tried to reinstall Windows 7 back on my computer but it wouldn't go through since the grub startup thing is the main one, not the windows one.

Ubuntu :: Grub Rescue Error: No Such Partition And Can't Boot To Live CD/USB!

Dec 2, 2010

I have a netbook that dual-boots Win XP and Ubuntu 10.04 and accidentally hit the Win recovery mode in GRUB today, but quickly restarted without formatting or proceeding with any recovery. But upon reboot I just see: error: no such partition. grub rescue>

What I have tried so far: Boot to USB Live Disk... It won't, just goes straight to grub rescue.I do ls and it gives me (hd0) (hd0,4) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1) (fd0) error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values.

set gives me
prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub
root=hd0,5

but if I try to boot it says unknown command so I figured I needed to find the right partition to boot from but I went through all of them with ls (hd0,4)/boot, ls (hd0,3)/boot etc. and every partition comes back "unknown filesystem".

Software :: GRUB Won't Boot From XFS Partition Gives Error 21.

Apr 17, 2010

GRUB (0.97) won't boot the XFS partition that holds my new Arch Linux install, instead giving an error 21. I am able to boot my system using GRUB on the Arch Linux install CD - having to manually edit the commands each time.

This holds even after I updated all software and then reran setup from the grub shell. I made sure to install to the MBR not the partition (the latter I believe trashes XFS).

Googling has found some mentions of trouble, but nothing that seems to clear on how to resolve the issue.

Changing filesystem is not an option - I installed Arch on a drive that already contained all my data. (Which is all fine, I made sure not to format it

General :: Grub - Error 17: Cannot Mount Selected Partition

Dec 15, 2010

i ran into this issue only because i wanted to learn. I was reading the book, linux troubleshooting and decided to give it a try.

1) I went to /boot/ and moved vmlinuz (kernel file) to my home directory. (/root/)
2) I booted, it didnt boot (as expected) and now the troubleshooting part begins.
3) i entered to grub config mode using c
4) When i press root (hd0, (tab) it gave me 2 partitions. hd0 which is my boot partition hd1 which is my '/' partition. Please keep in mind its LVM and not a physical partition
5) If i do this, root (hd0,1), and press boot, it gives the following error Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition

During my research i found that, LVM is not supported by grub, so kindly confirm me this ? is this the reason i am not able to access my root partition ? i am doing this on vmware so no issues, but just for the sake of learning, can someone tell me some way of restoring it without using any rescure disk (livecd, liveusb etc) ?

Now I understand these were probably used by Ubuntu. Now, when I restarted the PC,n I got:"error no such partition grub rescue"..I tried to boot from the CD - a windows XP setup CD, but I get blocked as well, because when I try formatting the drive during the installation CD it makes an error, or otherwise without formatting I also get an error.I guess the partitionning information of the hard drive is inconsistent, making everything fail.I dont know what to do.I am thinking to use a USB disk to reformat the HD, but I am not sure it will help.
