i have ubuntu 11.04 natty OS running on my laptop.i customize splash images using grub customizer but now its not working with error "grub-mkconfig not successfully completed..login as root".
View 9 RepliesI installed Debian on my PC and then installed Ubuntu. This worked fine and I could dual boot between the two. The PATA disk was /dev/hda on debian and (I think) /dev/sda on Ubuntu. I copied the entire disk to a sata disk using dd from knoppix and put the PATA one to one side. Now the Ubuntu comes up fine but when I boot debian, it complains about references to /dev/hda1, which is present in grub - root=/dev/hda1. Debian now expects sda references rather than hda references. How do I persuade Ubuntu to write /dev/sda1 to the bootloader rather than /dev/hda1 using grub-mkconfig?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a complete newbie, trying to get away from Windows Vista! I had some issues installing Ubuntu, but finally got it sorted - so I thought. I wanted to view a dnl file, so tried to boot into Windows, and I got a white screen with big red letters saying "ERROR". So I held down the off button for 5 seconds, and then tried to reboot. But now all I get is the words:
error: no such partition
grub rescue>
Before I go further, I'll summarise the problem with my install. Basically it would only get partway through, if at all, and then all the options would freeze...I could move the mouse, but that was it. Similarly with running Ubuntu on the LiveCD. After a lot of hassle, and some helpful members of the community, it turned out that all I needed to do was use the option "nomodest" when installing, and it all went fine. Well actually I had to retry it again in recovery mode because I think maybe a driver wasn't loaded (?), but after that everything seemed alright. So as mentioned before, I've come to my present issue. Typing "Is" gives "Unknown command" (or maybe "invalid"...I can't remember). And if I type "set" I get something like "prefix=..." and something else...sorry I can't remember and I don't want to turn off the computer now just in case things don't work again.
Anyway I managed to boot and run Ubuntu using the LiveCD, and started looking for solutions. Note that I used the "nomodest" option again to boot. Anyway all the solutions involve first using "fdisk -l" to find the partitions. Here is the output:

I'm currently setting up a dell server with hardware raid 1 on sas 6r. i got 4 sas installed on the server and configured to raid 1 as stated below,
array 1:
slot 0 & 1
array 2:
slot 2 & 3
during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.

I was logged in as root, made some changes to my users and think I may have inadvertently changed root somehow. Ever since then, my machine runs just fine, I can sudo, Yast, etc without any issues. (Root password is fine) but when I try to log in as root, the system changes the screen display, as if it's going to login, then returns me back to the login prompt without error. If I "ctl+alt+F1", I drop out to the console and can login as root, but cannot startx because the display is already in use.... So, I removed the .X0-lock, but still cannot get the GUI to load. (after running rm /tmp/./X0-lock, I get a fatal error, "can't establish any listening sockets..." "Ctl+Alt+F7" brings me back to the GUI where I am logged in as myself in Gnome) if I login with my user account, everything runs fine and all is well.

I cannot login with root. some time ago, had to make some changes to shadow password file. Cannot log in. Booted into single user mode. typed in passwd root. Get Access token error. I read if the shadow password for root is messed up, would need to delete it and leave it blank OR use pwconv to start a new shadow password file, then do a passwd root to create a new password. pwconv is not installed. Where do I download it for centos?

However, If I try to run System->Administration->Users/Groups, when it asks for root password, it is rejected. On a new installation of Linux Red Hat server, I was adding new users from the list using "newusers" command. I did not realize that one of the users was "root" so this is what line I loaded by error (among other users) : root:root:1176:501::/home/circuser:/bin/bash all other users from the list (160 of them) got loaded properly. I still have valid root login that I could use, but I'm not able to log in as root anymore. If I log in as user and then try "su" or "su -" I get error: ": No such file or directory".
I compared /etc/passwd, group and shadow on this server with old one I'm replacing and entry for root looks the same:
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash ( in passwd)
root:x:0: (in /etc/group)

I installed 10.04 (clean install) on a 250G drive (partitioned to 107G for the system files). It was working fine, until I wanted to install Window$ for the use of Adobe stuff. I popped the Windows XP disc in, it loaded its files, then I tried to choose a partition for installation. There was an error saying that I can't do that, and needed to delete a partition blah blah. I thought it was too much trouble, so I quit and just wanted to use my 10.04. Booted, and it says "Error booting operating system" I WAS SHOCKED.
I tried to install grub (but don't need that right? I DO NOT want to dual boot now), but the usual method ( the sudo grub; root (hd0.0)...) doesn't work ,because something like "stage1" is missing. I tried many methods by still the same error. The reason I do not want a clean install is that I did many fixes on my 10.04 so that it would work with my EeePC 1001pxd, and I do not want to go through that again. I will be checking my email frequently on other computers if I have a chance.
i am having problems with privileges i have created a new user with my name, but i cant get root privileges on it. i need the same privileges as the root profile.

I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared).Why is this happening?Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.
I edited fstab to automatically mount my windows data partition on boot, but I screwed it up by not specifying the file system type, however that is not the problem, I was able to fix that easily. The problem was that when it failed to mount the partition, Debian automatically entered root and I guess that is to be expected in order for me to fix it, but I never configured a root password and it just gave me full root access without asking any password, not even my user password. I though that was strange so I set the root password and sure thing it asked me for the root password this time without automatically logging into root....
I then tried to lock the root account to see if it will ask me for a password or not, it did but of course I wasn't able to login as root because it was locked now and I was left with no way to access the system. I had to fix fstab from a live cd so that I can login normally as the user....
I didn't know what to search for or if that is the expected behavior if you don't set root password during installation, but it just seemed a bit strange to automatically enter root when you specifically disable root login during installation...
I want, when I boot up, to load and log-in automatically a default user. I get a login in screen with the option to login as root, I do not want this. How do disable the option to login to X as root and just load as me/default user?
