I have my partitions as follows:- Windows 7- UbuntuIf I shrink the Windows partition will I be able to enlarge the Ubuntu root partition with gparted live cd?I know I can add space after Ubuntu but can it be done before it?

I'm trying to add more memory to Ubuntu from my windows partition, but Gparted doesn't seem to recognize the windows partiton. I've done it before using the gparted live cd, so i don't know why it wont recognize the partition. Is there some way to mount it so I can move space around?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently got new hard drives for more space and copied all my old drives onto this one (everything mirrored, no problems)The thing is, when I first setup my Ubuntu, I only allotted like 20GB because of space.Now that I have new hard drives, I wanted to give it more space, roughly double it to 50gb.The problem is, I am unable to resize it.I have booted into the Ubuntu Live CD, and started Gparted. I see all my stuff there, including the unallocated space next to my ubuntu partition (I left it so i could fill it when I expanded the partition)
The problem is, I am unable to make it larger. I right click, click on resize/move, but when I do, it just shows that I'm at my maximum size for that partition, I can only shrink it.so my question is, how in the world can I extend that partition into the unallocated space?I've tried formatting the unallocated space to ext3 to try and merge it, no success.I tried moving my ubuntu partition all the way to the right (end of the disk) so maybe I could extend it to the left, nothing
I've been trying to resize my root partition with gparted. I resize a ntfs partition to get more freespace available and I got 30GB of freespace and when I try to resize my root partition (unmounted) I can't do it, it's like I don't have any freespace.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu on my laptop and I was recommended to create separate partitions for root, home and swap. I was told that 15GB would be enough for a root partition but I am actually running out of that space very quickly after installing a few programs.
I wanted to resize it so I loaded up my live cd with Gparted and It won't let me resize it by more than 1MB. I also have at least 30GB of unallocated space on my hard drive so I don't know why I can't use it.

Want to repartition/resize existing 1/2 full 60MB sda2 currently containing NTFS. The "Allocate drive space" does not seem to have a resize option (the 10.04 docs claim there was a resize option here). When I run 10.10 gparted in live mode gparted crashes for unknown reason before it even finishes scanning the disk. Am I missing something here? (Never tried to resize an ntfs part. with Ubuntu.) The laptop I am installing this on currently has XP that crashes a lot for unknown reasons.

On GParted I shrank my /dev/sda1 (Windows) from 36GB to 26 GB. Then I had 10 GB of unallocated space. I didn't know how I could use this unallocated space to increase the size of /dev/sda7 (/home). How do you do this?
extended sata partition shrunk at 15 partition limit, how to re-enlarge i hit the 15 partition limit, forgetting it now exists for sata drives, thinking i would add more. upon creation of the 15th, it squished the end of the extended partition to meet the last logical partition, leaving a large unallocated portion after the extended partition, which seemingly nothing can be done with, just sat being wasted space. i have since deleted a few of those partitions, but so far have still failed to find a way to recoup the unallocated space back into the extended partition.

if necessary, i'll do it the painful long winded way of backing up and starting the extended partition again from scratch, but i really rather wouldnt have to do that. i'm sure there must be a way of telling the extended partition to once again reach the end of the drive.
I am trying to grow my array to make full use of my drives. I have a raid 6 using mdadm on my home server. The array used to consist of 6 1.5TB drives when it was created. Since then I've been replacing the 1.5TB drives with new 2TB drives. And now I have replaced the last 2 drives.
When I added the first 3 disks I did not use the whole disk for the raid partition but rather made it the same size as the 1.5 partitions. As it turns out this may have been a bad idea. (But it gave me another 3 partitions of 500GB that I turned into 1 disk using mhddfs.)
Now I'm trying to grow the array. I've been testing in a virtual enviroment on how to do it but I cannot find another method than this :
1) fail 1 disk.
2) re-partition the disk with the size of the whole disk.
3) re-add the drive as a spare.
4) start the now degraded array to let it resync.
5) wait quite a while. (aprox 5 hours)
6) start again from step 1 for the other disks.
7) use mdadm with grow command to enlarge the array
use resize2fs to fill array to max size
Now although since this is a raid 6, I keep some redundancy but I still worry about degrading the array so manny times and rebuilding the whole thing. I mean I read the thing out 3 or 4 times over doing this.
I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:

Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.
I've installed fedora on my PC by reducing the existing NTFS partition and installing Fedora on free space at the end of the disk. Now I'd like tho enlarge fedora's partition. How can I do this? If I just move the partition back in disk, can I boot normally on fedora?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI want to increase the size of my Linux partition (yellow and highlighted in image), which is situated in an extended partition, along with my biggest partition.
When I try to select the options from any partitioning software (EASUS, Paragon, Gparted) the option to resize is not available (or can't enlarge).
For example in the Paragon Hard Disk Manager, I can't add free space before the partition, even if I first shrink the "G:" partition, then try to enlarge the one with Linux.
Do you know what's happening here? Why am I not allowed to resize the partition?
I have a 500 GB dual boot debian jessie + windows laptop; I intend to erase windows completely and add the extra space to my existing /home partition. What is the best way of doing it without harming data in my present /home partition?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI was reading another thread about someone with a bad partition table and I decided to join this forum. I'm not going to take any drastic actions with the partition (/dev/sda3) in question. I am going to wait for instructions on what to do first. I am not very good with Linux and need some hand holding. System: DELL 4550 Dual-Booted with XP and Ubuntu. Works OK, just no swap. Well, here's what I did: I deleted a partition for Windows XP Pro because it was a trial, and it ran out. I then decided to slide the swap partition for the Ubuntu Linux that I dual-boot into over. (If this was successful, I was going to try expanding the root partition to take up the unused space.) I used Gparted on a CD to do this, as I figured it was safe to do.
I now cannot mount the swap space at bootup (and have to go into a backup version of the OS), although I can use Gparted in Linux to execute the "swapon" command, and it appears that it worked because I now see "swapoff" as an option on the context menu. (I actually don't even need a swap partition, except to hibernate.) If I highlight the swap partition and click on "Drive" on Gparted's menu bar and select "Create Partition Table", it will erase all data on /dev/sda, so how do I fix the bad partition table non-destructively?
I usually repartition a disk by backing up, deleting the partitions, formatting them and repartition. I just did a 200 gig backup (so i am safe) and i want to join 2 (ext3) partition together, sdb1 (data4) and sdb5 (data5) into one big partition. Is there a way to do it without scraping the data in sdb5 (data5). It would save me from rewriting the data back to that new partition (200 gig is time consuming).
View 1 Replies View RelatedBasically, I would like to have a separate /home partition on my hard disk that will be shared by two different Ubuntu releases. In other words, I would like Maverick and Lucid to be on their own separate partitions, but to share the same /home. I already have Lucid installed (no separate /home). I know how to use GParted with the Live CD in order to edit partitions, but the main question I have is how do I migrate my /home folder to its own partition without ruining data? I've skimmed through some GParted tutorials but they don't exactly detail what I want.
Once that is done, I need to know if it is possible for Lucid and Maverick to share the same /home partition, and how would I set that up?
I decided I'm going to go back to a dual boot to see if I can get some of the slackware issues resolved on my laptop; its ubuntu only at the moment due to wireless problems. I've only got one hard drive so I can't simply unmount and repartition from gparted, I've lost all of my random linux live cds, and can't find a spare blank optical disc. Is there a way to boot from directly from the iso or from a flash drive or something?

View 3 Replies View Relatedsda2 and sda5 are the same partition. i set up sda5 because i wanted it to be ext4 just like sda1. i thought if i went ahead and formatted the second partition to ext4 it would just show up, automount and always be there. in my case it hasnt worked that way. is anything wrong with this, if so, how do i fix it?

Long story short, after reinstalling windows 7 and messing around a little with its partition and the other ntfs one (resizing etc); Gparted won't open the disk. It shows all the disk as unallocated space, And throws a message to the terminal which says something like "Can't have a partition out of the disk." Funny thing is that *almost* everything is working fine. Everything works except that ubuntu can't use the swap. (Dmesg says: "Swap area shorter than signature indicates") Also, testdisk, if i run a deep search for partitions, finds the last partition twice, but the second time the partition goes from 37129 0 1 to 40240 254 63 , while the disk ends at 38913 255 63. The problem is that I can't use Gparted now and I want to resize a partition.Also I believe that going without swap is not good for ubuntu.
What partition type does Mac OS X use, and can gparted create one?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with dual boot and I think because it is a dual boot I can't find the linux partition, installed when I knew nothing about linux, so I most likely went with the default settings, I'm an absolute convert now and have run out of space for ubuntu.So got on the net and seen many screen shots of gparted with a clearly visible linux partition, swap etc, so I make myself a gparted live cd and mine is just not there.Really don't want to do another ubuntu re-install. This k52f has too many setting to correct with ubuntu and took me a really long time!!
Or is there is a different solution to to this other than expanding a possibly hidden linux partition? Is the alternative storing files on a shared partition both os can share?
I've almost run out of space on the Ubuntu partition, so I figured I would re-size it using Gparted. However, Gparted is not showing that I have any partition in the main hard disk. What's going on?

I dont want to screw this up, I know I have to use the gparted boot disk. But really, can anyone give me sort of step by step guide of how to resize my linux partition ( I was thinking in expanding it from the current 25gb to 30gb).
I have Seagate Freeagent Go 500GB external hard drive that I use for backup. I wanted to resize the partition so I used GParted to shrink the 500GB NTFS partition to 400GB. The other 100 I wanted to encrypt and use for some other more important files. For some reason, the shrink failed and I disconnected the hard drive and reconnected it. I didn't see the icon appear on the desktop. I went into the Disk Utility to discover that GParted's shrink error deleted all of the partitions on my hard drive. So I created a new 400GB NTFS partition and put back all of my files. The other 100 is unallocated currently.
It will normally mount automatically and show up on the desktop but the hard drive won't mount without me going into the Disk Utility and mounting it through there. I can't even mount it from the Terminal with root privileges. It gives me this:

Now, I can unmount with root privileges and I can unmount it from the Disk Utility. I can browse and edit the files within. But I can't unmount it from within Nautilus or on the desktop (the Safely Remove Drive option is not there).
The new 400GB partition also isn't detected by GParted. It just shows the whole drive as unallocated.
I have a new 1.5tb internal drive I want to partition as NTFS (because Windoze machines need to see/use it) and in gparted, when I go to partition -> new, it says it could not add this operation to the list a partition cannot have a length of -1 sectors. I recall having this issue on my 2tb external drive and I ended up creating the NTFS parition on a Windoze machine and then bringing it to the Linux box but since this is an internal drive, that's not an option. I took all the defaults in the "Create new partition" screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was resizing my windows partition and accidently turned my computer off. When I went to run a disk check from gparted I get multiple filesystem errors. Chkdsk /r when run from a recovery cd says it can't determine the size of the partition so it can't continue. Is there anyway to get my files off the corrupted partition from within linux. Right now Gparted shows that it has been resized but that it is corrupted and i can't even attempt to mount it. There are only a few files I need to get off the partition but they are really important.
